'Buck' Buttrell ODESSA — Ople Afton Buttrell, 88, of Odessa died Friday, May 5, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Jayton. He married Leona Bishop Oct. 12, 1932, in Rotan. She preceded him in death Sept. 6, 1998. Mr. Buttrell moved to Odessa in 1942 from McCamey. He was a retired automotive mechanic. He worked for Davis Chevrolet and Broncho-Chevy for over 50 years. He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member and past member of Masonic Lodge No. 955. He was past presiding officer of the York Rite Bodies. He was also a member of the Knights of York Cross of Honor and past district deputy grand master of the 82nd Masonic District. He held a life certification in the esoteric work of the masonic lodge. He was a lifetime member of the West Texas Amateur Radio Club "W5QPA" and lifetime member of West Texas Gem and Mineral Society. Survivors include his daughters, Pat Sproul and husband, Tom, of Fort Davis, Cathie Harden and husband, Perry, of Odessa, Sue Bowen and husband, Ralph, of Midland and Tracee Haddock of Odessa; brother, Claude Buttrell of Big Timber, Mont.; nine grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Guadalupe Esparza, 89, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Friday, May 05, 2000, at New Horizon Nursing Home. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. Public visitation will be from 1 to 10 p.m. today and at 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Monday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. She was born May 27, 1910, in Alice and was a lifelong resident of Odessa. She was Catholic. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her father, Francisco Gallardo. Survivors include his daughter, Esperanza Valles of Odessa; son, Eliseo Roberto Esparza of Odessa; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Thelma Minter Young, 74, of Odessa died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Kermit. She was born July 10, 1925, in Ardmore, Okla. She married Morris Young June 1, 1977, in Wink. Mrs. Young came to Odessa in 1977. She was a retired nurse and had worked for the hospital in Kermit and later worked for Dr. Ramanathan in Odessa. She was a former resident of Wink. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Morris Young of Odessa; sons, Jesse Minter, Johnny Minter and Victor Minter, all of Abilene, Aubrey Young of Buckeye, Ark., and David Young of Garland; daughters, Linda Thomas of Weatherford, Jo Ella Parker of El Dorado and Sharon Richardson of Odessa; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Fay Parker Williams, 94, of Odessa passed away May 5, 2000, Thursday at Medical Center Hospital. She was born in Coleman County, Texas, Feb. 6, 1906, to Mary and William W. Parker. She married Oscar Z. "Curley" Williams in 1927 in Abilene. They moved to Odessa in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1961. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Cheatwood, in 1987; a son, Bill Williams in 1997; and one grandson. Mrs. Williams was active in the Contemporary Garden Club, Keep Odessa Beautiful, Meals-on-Wheels, a Friend of the Library at UTPB and a founding member of the First Presbyterian Church. She and her husband owned and operated Williams Plumbing and Heating from 1945 until 1970. Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Pat Williams and husband, Grady, and Jo Duval, all of Odessa; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Strickland of Las Cruces, N.M., Bessie T. Parker of Coleman, Ruby Lowe of Irving and Rita Foster of Lawton, Okla. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Atoka Cemetery in Coleman County with the Rev. Jeff Robinette officiating. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home in Odessa and Stevens in Coleman. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Charles William "Bill" Long, 71, went to be with his Lord May 5, 2000, at home. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bishop officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Bill Long was born July 26, 1928, in Karnes City, Pa., to Clare William and Mildred Ellen Long. Bill served in the Army in Nagasaki, Japan. He returned to Chicora, Pa., to work in Long’s Cleaners, and he married Esther Michael Sept. 19, 1948, in Butler, Pa. In 1958, Bill moved to Odessa. He retired from Prudential Insurance Company as a sales manager in 1986. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He was 33rd Degree Mason. Bill loved to play golf, hunt and fish, and family was very important. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Clare William Long; and his brother, Thomas LeRoy Long. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Esther Long; mother, Mildred E. Long of Midland; daughters, Kathleen Johnson and husband, Roy, of Yukon, Okla., Cristie Lynn Barrow and husband, Gary, of Midland and Billie Sterling and husband, Mike, of Odessa; five grandchildren, Kevin Johnson of Eastland, Kandy E. Messenger of Anchorage, Alaska, Robert Sterling of Odessa, Angela Barrow of Midland and Lindsey B. Sterling of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Alexis Messenger of Anchorage, Alaska, Haley and Kaitlyn Johnson of Eastland and Lyden Lehman Sterling of Odessa; sister, Dixie Lee Bagwell and husband, Jack of Midland; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Richard Elkins, Bob Chamberlin, Sam Gray, Bill Gray, Lou Jarocki and Don Perry. Honorary pallbearer will be Albert "Shorty" Voglino.
