May 23, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Juanita Trichell Metcalf PECOS — Juanita Trichell Metcalf, 56, of Pecos passed away Friday, May 19, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with Dex Welch officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos. Juanita was a devoted mother and a dedicated nurse who loved life, being outdoors, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren. She was born January 8, 1944, in Coushatta, La. She was a member of the first graduating class of Odessa College School of Nursing in Pecos. She had worked as a surgical nurse at Reeves County Hospital since 1976. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Spivey and her husband, Robert, of Vidor; her son, Terry Metcalf and his wife, Jennifer, of Alexandria, Ky.; her daughter, Karen Metcalf of Converse, La.; her son Curtis Metcalf and his wife, Kelly, of Pecos; her daughter, Lynell Putnam and her husband, Paul, of Orla; her brother, Jimmy Trichell of Odessa; her brother, Delton Trichell of Bossier City, La.; her sister, Sandra Rice and her husband, Charlie, of Independence, Mo.; and her sister Marion Turner and her husband, Tim, of Big Lake. She is also survived by five granddaughters and four grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Dayton Metcalf; her mother, Viola Trichell; and her sister, Sharon Flynn. Funeral services under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home of Pecos. _________________________________________________________________ Ruby Carlene Bullock ODESSA — Ruby Carlene Bullock, 87, of Odessa died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at her residence. Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Wesley Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Newton officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. She was born April 8, 1913, in Madill, Okla. She married William Melvin Bullock Jan. 31, 1942. He preceded her in death May 22, 1953. Mrs. Bullock moved to Odessa in 1947 from Abilene. She had been a nurse for 43 years. She was a longtime and faithful member of Wesley Evangelical Methodist Church. Survivors include her sons, Bobby Dixon and wife, Sandy, of Paradise, W.C. Dixon and wife, Becky, of Odessa, George Bullock of Bastrop and Melvin Bullock and wife, Margaret, of Odessa; brothers, J.L. Palmour of Lubbock and Raymond Palmour of Abilene; sister, Carrie Harrison of Pasadena; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Billy Dixon, Michael Dixon, Ricky Dixon, Charles Palmour, Anthony Redfern and Troy Luecky. The family suggests memorials to Wesley Evangelical Methodist Church. Lawless passed on to her reward on Saturday, May 20, 2000, after a long, well-fought battle with cancer. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Peggy was a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, daughter, sister and person. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her husband, A.M. Lawless; her daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Larry Williams; two grandsons, Joshua and Justin Williams; her mother, Avis Ives of Odessa; her sisters, Sandy Brumitt, Penny Hite, both of Odessa, Betty Ives of San Angelo and Henry Myers of Alvin; brothers, Warren Ives and Leroy Ives, both of New Mexico and Jerry Ives of Odessa. Smith Sr. ODESSA — Our beloved husband, dad, son, PaPa and brother went to meet the Lord Sunday, May 21, 2000, at his residence. He passed away after a lengthy illness. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Chapel. A military graveside will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. J.L. joined the Navy in 1957 and retired in 1976. He fought for our country, "For freedom for his generation and generations to come." He married Nancy Livesay June 1, 1959. He was preceded in death by his father, William Alfred Smith; and by a granddaughter, Rhea Ann Flick. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Smith of Odessa; mother and stepfather, Lucy and Pete Grimes of Hugo, Okla.; five children, John Smith Jr. and wife, Benita, Tressa C. Martin, Penny J. Kerns and husband, Bob, Michelle Hughes and husband, Mykle, Annetta Flick and Ray Smith, all of Odessa; brothers, Wayne Smith and wife, Corrine, of Denver, Colo., Kent Grimes and wife, Terrie, of Eufalde, Okla.; and 13 grandchildren. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. He was loved and will be missed by all. _________________________________________________________________ MIDLAND — Louise Elizabeth Sheeler "Mrs. J.E.R." died of cancer on Monday, May 22, 2000, at her home in Midland surrounded by her children: Cookie Wetendorf of Midland, Jim Sheeler of Houston and Ann Holleran of Columbia, Mo. She also is survived by her brother, Jack Schneider of Lafayette, La.; and her grandchildren, Trey Wetendorf of Midland, Brent Warner Wetendorf of Wichita Falls, Jim Sheeler III of Boulder, Colo., Cassie Lawrence of New York City, Amy Hunter of Houston, Erin and Meghan Holleran of Columbia, Mo., Brigid Vincent of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and her great-grandchildren, James Sheeler IV of Boulder, Colo., and John Thomas and Christine Elizabeth Lawrence of New York City. Mrs. Sheeler was born Sept. 25, 1914, in SlideIl, La., to John Joseph and Lillie Schneider. She spent her early years in Slidell and New Orleans. She received a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in organic chemistry from Louisiana State University, where she met and married J.E.R. Sheeler of New Orleans. During Mr. Sheeler’s long career with Shell Oil Company, they lived in numerous locations in South Louisiana and West Texas, moving to the Odessa/Midland area in 1952. Upon her husband’s death in Midland in 1984, Mrs. Sheeler returned to Louisiana to live in the French Quarter in New Orleans and was the sole proprietor of the Royal Mail Service. She loved the French Quarter and was an active member of the Vieux Carre Property Owners Association and a parishioner at St. Louis Cathedral. In 1995, she moved back to Midland, where she resumed her longtime interest in duplicate bridge. A life master and tournament competitor, Mrs. Sheeler played regularly at the Allison Bridge Center and the Midland Country Club. During her years in the Permian Basin, Mrs. Sheeler was involved in many civic and religious organizations. She served as the chair of the City of Midland Housing Authority and was a Past President of the League of Women Voters. She volunteered as a certified Ombudsman at Manor Park and was a former member of the Board of Casa de Amigos. She helped pave the way for the establishment of the Midland County Housing Authority and served as its first executive director. She held numerous positions within the Catholic diocese and with St. Ann’s Church. She was a lifelong member of the Democratic National Committee. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway. Following will be a visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. There will be a Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at St. Ann‘s Catholic Church, 1908 W. Texas Ave., in Midland with the Rev. Jack Franko, OMI, of Port Isabel, officiating.
