May 31, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Stephen L. Cannon, Ph.D. ODESSA — Stephen L. Cannon passed away Monday, May 29, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Cannon was born Aug. 8, 1944, in Bay City, Texas. He was raised in Odessa and graduated 10th in the Odessa High School Class of 1962. He earned the degrees of bachelor of science, master of science, and doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering from Texas Tech University. He taught in the Schools of Engineering at Texas Tech (1967-1972), the University of Utah (1973-1974) and UCLA (1974-1980). He was elected member of Tau Beta Pi, which is the engineering equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa (Texas Beta Chapter, 1967), full member of the American Society of Chemical Engineers, full member of Sigma Xi Research Society, founding member of the society for Biomaterials, member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, associate member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, attendee of the Gordon Research Conferences on Textiles in 1972, Outstanding Young Men in America, 1973, Washington, D.C., SANDOZ Fellow, 1972, and citizen ambassador to the People’s Republic of China — Biomaterials and Bioengineering 1983 and 1989. Dr. Cannon published and presented 30 papers in national and international scholarly journals and symposia. Since 1976, he had been an industrial consultant and an expert witness in legal matters involving the failure analysis of polymeric materials and systems as well as surgical implants. Dr. Cannon was a longtime member of the San Diego Zoological Society, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, member of the American Philatelic Society, and contributor to numerous local, state, and national charitable and conservationist organizations. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and served as an acolyte from 1957 through 1962. He was a member of the vestry from 1994 to 1996. He was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal School Board from 1995 to 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, G.R. and Mary Cannon. He is survived by numerous friends. His services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Laura Deaderick officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
