June 01, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Robert Arredondo, 30, born May 5, 1970, in Camden, N.J., died in Midland County Saturday, May 29, 2000. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Frey officiating. Pallbearers will be Richard Arredondo, Margarito Victor Castro, Elrick Lopez, Victor Castro, Johnny Nabarrette, Johnny Nabarrette Jr., Christoper Nabarrette and Vance Johnston. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Greg Ehrenberg, Joe Lee Arredondo Jr. and Pete Thomas. Robert worked for UTI Drilling as a derrickman. He moved to Texas from Hawaii in March 1999 with his wife, Nelia Ann Arredondo. They were married Nov. 20, 1997, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Robert was a loving husband and father. Robert was preceded in death by his brother David Arredondo; father, Serapio Arredondo Jr.; uncles, Onesimo and Gilbert Arredondo; and aunt, Teresa Martinez. His survivors include his wife, Nelia Ann Orot Arredondo of Odessa; son, Kaleb David Arredondo of Odessa; daughter, Kristen May Arredondo of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; stepfather and mother, Roger and Mary Lou Ochoa of Riverside, Calif. Robert has two brothers, Richard Arredondo of Abilene and Raul Arredondo of Odessa; four sisters, Maria T. Castro of Wichita Falls, Jovita Arredondo of Abilene, Lillian Ehrenberg and Debbie Arredondo of Odessa; grandfather, Hijinio Uribez of Saginaw, Mich.; grandmother, Josephine Juarez of Odessa; uncles Jose Cesario Uribez, Tomas Uribez of Del Rio, Johnny Nabarrette of Odessa and David Arredondo of Garden Grove, Calif.; aunts, Maria Elena Gamboa, Mena Lopez, both of Odessa. Robert has 27 nephews and nieces: Margarito Victor Castro of Lubbock, Mary Enedina Castro of Olney, Elizabeth Castro, Brittany Michelle Arredondo, Stephanie Banda, Austin Arredondo, Christy Angel Lee and Orlando Torres II, all of Wichita Falls, Damian, David II, Dane and Devin Arredondo of Pine Ridge, S.D., Richard Arredondo Jr., Johnny Arredondo and Raul Jr. Arredondo of Oklahoma City, Okla., Freedom Dawn Arredondo, Elrick Lopez, ZiAndra Lopez, Elzid Lopez, Jonathan Dakota Arredondo, Tyler Mikal Arredondo, RosaLee Arredondo, Vanessa Jean Johnston, Daisy Carina Navarrete, Marta Lopez, Cynthia Marie Arredondo and Tiffanee Castro, all of Odessa, Jesse Lee Oliver of Fort Worth Robert also has two great-nephews, Bryant Victor Castro of Lubbock and Cecilio Armando Lopez of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Rita Cox, 89, died peacefully just before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28 at Medical Center Hospital, with her friends Eloise Elder and Sister Margaret Ledwith, as well as her nephew Tom L. Cox III and his wife, Linda, at her side. Miss Cox retired from education in 1975 following a 44-year career that included four years teaching third grade in Mexia, Texas, a move to Odessa in 1935 where she spent 30 years teaching business courses at Odessa High School, and an additional 10 years as secretary to the Ector County Independent School District superintendent. Miss Cox was a decades-long member of the First Baptist Church and was loved and respected by the congregation. Miss Cox will be honored by her family and friends in a celebration of her life at funeral services to be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday morning, June 3, 2000, in the Chapel of Frank W Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa, Texas, 79761. Burial will be in the Cox family plot in Mexia, Texas. Visitation with family members present will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel. The 11 a.m. services will be conducted by her friend and neighbor, Medical Center Chaplain, Margaret Ledwith. Miss. Cox's friends are invited to share their special memories, stories or thoughts with the assembly during the celebration service. Born August 22, 1910, in Richland, Texas, Miss. Cox was a 1927 graduate of Mexia High School. She graduated from Baylor University in 1931 with a bachelor of arts degree in history with honors. She held a Lifetime Professional High School Texas Teacher Certificate, and during her teaching career, took postgraduate courses from the University of Texas, the University of Colorado and the University of Southern California. A member of the Texas State Teachers Association and the American Association of University Women, she was instrumental in developing the local chapter of the Texas Educational Secretaries Association (TESA) and served as the first chapter President in Odessa. She served as state treasurer of TESA in 1958 and as vice president in 1959. She was a longtime member of the Zeta Kappa chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Miss Cox is predeceased by her mother and father, Willie Pearce and Tom L. Cox Sr.; sisters, Mildred Cox Mein and Elise Cox; and her brother, Tom L. Cox Jr. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lola Willis Cox; niece, Rite Kay Cox Upshaw and her children Katherine and Paul Lencioni; nephew, Jim W. Cox and his twins, Mathew and Michael Cox; and nephew, Tom L. Cox III and his children, Kristine Cox Wentworth and James K. Cox; as well as by her great-great niece/nephews, Brittany and Daniel Wentworth, Zachary Cox and Ethan Cox. In addition, Miss Cox leaves three surviving first cousins, Elton Bresenhem, Rilla Bresenham Jarrett, and R.B. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Stefanie Joy Hill, 19, of Lubbock, formerly of Odessa, passed away Monday, May 29, 2000, in Lubbock. A brilliant young lady, Stefanie grew up in Monahans. She moved to Odessa at the age of 16 and attended Permian High School graduating with honors in 1997. Stefanie then enrolled at Texas Tech University where she was classified as a senior majoring in psychology at the time of her death. She was a member of Sigma Phi Lambda Sorority, First Baptist Church in Odessa, Indiana Avenue Baptist Church in Lubbock and a longtime member of Grace Fellowship Church in Monahans. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Grace Fellowship Church in Monahans. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mark Bristow officiating. Stefanie is the daughter of Terry and Karen Hill of Odessa. She is survived by her three younger sisters, Janelle, Jessica and Jordan Hill of Odessa; grandparents, Don Hill of Mathis, Joy Hill of Monahans and Bryant and Barbara Hill of Lubbock. Stefanie will be remembered for her outstanding academic achievements and as a very caring young lady, unselfishly caring for others. Services are under the professional care of Sunset Memorial Gardens. _________________________________________________________________ Lillian Mae Lewis ODESSA -- Lillian Mae Lewis, 79, of Odessa died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas. She was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Lindale. She married Leonard Wilson Lewis June 1, 1940, in Trent. He preceded her in death in 1963. Mrs. Lewis had lived in Odessa since 1946. She was a retired hairdresser. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Rosie Estoll; brothers, Perry L. Estoll and Joe W. Estoll; and sister, Lorene Blair. Survivors include her sons, Tommy G. Lewis of Dallas and James A. Lewis of Cisco; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nephews, Ricky Estoll of Odessa, Stan Estoll of Denver, Colo., and Terry Blair of Dallas; nieces, Debbie Brooks of Odessa and Kathy David of Georgetown. Sims, 59, of Austin, formerly of Odessa, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2000, after a courageous three and half year battle with Lou Gherig's Disease. Gary was a Certified Public Accountant and former CFO for Standard Sales Company Inc. of Odessa. Gary was born in Comanche, Texas, April 16, 1941, to Belva and Earl Sims, of Odessa. His father, preceded him in death. Mr. Sims is survived by his wife, Ann Sims; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Stephen Shands; grandson, Alexander Shands, all of Austin; mother, Belva Sims; and brother, Herbert Sims, both of Odessa. The family would like to thank persons who cared for Gary during his illness particularly, Mark Lynn, Eric Miranda, Roberto Gonzales and Eric Johnson. Thanks also to Dr. James Pohl and his staff and, to Father Kevin Bond Allen and Hospice Austin. Graveside service was held Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Austin Memorial Park. County Road West, Odessa, Texas 79763. _________________________________________________________________ C.E. "Chuck" Spangler MIDLAND -- After a lengthy illness, C.E. "Chuck" Spangler peacefully passed away the morning of Monday, May 29, 2000. Born in Borger, Texas, Feb. 29, 1929, to Claude and Roxie Ayer, Chuck joined the United States Marine Corps in 1945 and retired as a Captain in 1957. He subsequently was Purchasing Agent for the City of Odessa until 1966 and was twice presented with the keys to the city for his many and multifaceted contributions. During this time he felt very fortunate to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. He flew for Bill Roden's oil company and McVean & Barlow as corporate pilot before joining CSI and flying pipeline over the southwestern United States. Chuck then had an opportunity to form his own oil and gas service company, Spangler Service Company, Inc., which operated in South Texas until the downturn in the industry. His love of people then led him to begin a retail sales business and he traveled and made many friends wherever he went. He has lived in Midland since 1987. Chuck leaves behind his wife and companion of 19 years, Christine Petty Spangler; and his beloved daughter, Nancy Lee Swarts. Also remembering their grandfather with love are grandsons, Jade Anthony, Jonathan Ross and Sterling Carter; and the light of his life, granddaughter, Solitaire; also two stepsons, Bryan and Darl Petty of Houston. He is also survived by one sister, Ona Mae Whittenburg of Coruthersville, Mo.; and by numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Belva Cook and Bessie MeKeIroy. Chuck has donated his body to science in hopes that something can be learned that might help even one person. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Lung Association, Alzheimer's Association or Home Hospice.
