June 11, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Sixto Pacheco, 76, passed away June 10, 2000, at New Horizon Nursing Center. He was born July 4, 1924, in Fort Stockton. Mr. Pacheco came to Odessa in 1976 and was a construction laborer. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States. Mr. Pacheco was preceded in death by his son, Tomas Pacheco; and sister, Lucy Flores; brothers, Chon Pacheco and Marcos Pacheco. He is survived by his wife, Enriqueta Pacheco of Odessa; son, Sixto Pacheco Jr. of Odessa; daughters, Cristina Galindo of Fort Stockton, Patricia Pacheco and Tina Rhude and Sylvia Pacheco, all of Odessa; sisters, Juanita Mendez of Odessa, Fannie Lopez of California, Rita Gomez of Odessa, Donna Pacheco of Fort Stockton and Hope Weddle of Georgia; brother-in-law, Manuel Mata and his wife, Luisa, of Odessa; grandchildren, Debra, Nancy, Sammy, Timothy, Denise, Fabian, Chelsea, Vincent, Joe David, Raul, Steven and Crystal; and 16 great-grandchildren. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass for the Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Frey officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Services are by Odessa Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Rollie C. Barnes, 78, of Odessa passed away Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Odessa Medical Center. He was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Chillicothe to Rolland David and Letha Ann Barnes. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and two bronze stars for injuries received in action at Tulaqi in the Solomon Island Campaign. After the war, he moved to Odessa in 1945 from California. He married Sue Vorhauer, Aug. 23, 1969, in Big Spring. Rollie loved woodworking and bird-watching. He was a very loving Christian man and loved to have fun with his friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Sue Barnes of Odessa; children, Sherrie Lynn Wilson, Randall David Barnes, Debbie June Cocoran and her husband, Dan, Jeffery Don Barnes, Richard C. Barnes and his wife, Kim, Steven Bruce Barnes and his wife, Christy, and Judith Dianne Barnes; brother, Melvin M. (www. wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ HOUSTON -- Carolyn Greene Harris died June 3, 2000, at Diagnostic Hospital in Houston. She was born July 31, 1947, in Austin and moved to Odessa at age two and had been a resident for 23 years. In 1965, she graduated from Permian High School and later received her bachelor of arts degree in fine arts from the University of Texas at El Paso; a master of arts from Texas Tech; and an education doctorate from Texas Southern University in Houston. She taught art at Pasadena Middle School in Pasadena for 17 years and was employed as a counselor in the Channel View Independent School District in Channel View. Father William Houghton conducted a memorial service at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Pasadena on Tuesday, June 6, 2000. She enjoyed traveling and spent a summer at the University of Hawaii. Gardening was a favorite activity as was scuba diving. Survivors include her husband, George Harris of Pasadena; parents, Page and Barbara Greene; and sister, Mary Alyson Smith and husband, Richard, all of Odessa. Also nieces, Jennifer Chapman and Janey Chapman; nephews, David Page Mallow and wife, Tiffany, Jason Mallow and Bryce Mallow, all of Odessa. Those desiring may direct memorials to the American Cancer Society. _________________________________________________________________ MIDLAND -- Lawson L. Cook of Midland passed away at his home in Greentree Country Club on Friday, June 9, 2000, following a massive heart attack. He was born on July 19, 1912, in Jacksboro to David Cook and Barbara Chambers. After World War II, he returned to Graham from Fort Worth where he worked at Consolidated Aircraft Company as an electrical inspector of the B-52s, and opened Cook's Appliance and Refrigeration Company on the east side of the square in Graham. In 1956, he moved his family to Odessa to serve as manager of the Phillips Petroleum Building. He also became active in city government and was elected to the city council of Odessa in 1977 and served two terms from 1977 through 1981. At that time, he was active in organizing from the very beginning the Odessa Alzheimer's assistance group prior to the beginning of the current Alzheimer's Association for Odessa and Midland. He also had an active role in getting Texas Tech University Medical School to locate an exten-sion in Odessa. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed many years of flying single-engine aircraft and was a charter member of the Graham Confederate Air Force. He retired from RCA Communications in 1974 as a communications consultant for Mobile two-way radio equipment. His performance awards commended his efforts as a top producer. His memberships included Sunset Country Club and Greentree Country Club where he was an avid golfer for many years of his life. He also was a Mason and was a member of the Lions Clubs of Odessa and Graham and was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church in Odessa. He was the owner of Basin Radio Tower Company and also was CEO and 50-percent stock owner of O&L Tower Company Inc. Survivors include his wife, Janis C. Cook of Midland; daughters, Anita Cook New and her husband, Kenneth New, of Trophy Club, and Katherine "Kathy" Cook of Bryan; sons, James E. "Buddy" Cook and his wife, Eileen Suggs Cook, of San Antonio, Kenneth D. Cook and his wife, Karyn DeBoer Cook, of Midland; a stepdaughter, Vicki Kennon Greenfield and her husband, Dr. David Greenfield, of Seminole, Fla. He also is survived by nine grandchildren; one brother, James S. Cook of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his children's mother, Adele R. Cook in October 1985; and his sisters Adele Cook Edwards of Graham and Margaret Collie of Fort Worth; and one brother, Malone Cook of Chickasha, Okla. Visitation with the family will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at Ellis Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, at Pioneer Cemetery in Graham. Visitation in Graham will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Morrison Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Jess Donald Snelling ANDREWS -- Jess Donald Snelling, 67, of Brady, died Friday, June 9, 2000, in Brady as a result of a boating accident. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, in the Andrews West Cemetery. Officiating will be Richard Cooper of Andrews. Visitation will be today at McNett Funeral Home in Andrews. He was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Stephenville. Most of his life he resided in Andrews. After retiring from the oilfield in 1990, he moved to Brady to be close to the lake for fishing and family fun. Survivors include his grandchildren, Billy Nevels of Andrews, MeLisa Milner Haws of Carrollton; sisters, Ruth Bucy of Brady and Judy Brown of Farmington, N.M.; children, Linda Wood of Coleman and Donnie Snelling of Wichita Falls. He was an uncle to Elaine Darrington of Brady and Bonnie Kidd of Jal, N.M.; longtime friends of the family Ross, Shirley and Dusty Mason of Andrews; and several people who revered him as extended family.
