June 15, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ SNYDER Sam Ernest Daniels Jr., 75, of Odessa died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, in Cedar Hill. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at Snyder Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Day officiating. He was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Snyder. He married Dorothy Brown Feb. 10, 1956, in Yuma County, Ariz. She died Nov. 8, 1968. Mr. Daniels was a longtime resident of Odessa. He was a retired machinist. Survivors include his daughters, Teresa Allen of Odessa and T.J. Daniels of Worthham; son, Sam Daniels III of Cedar Hill; six stepchildren, Linda Clark of Bedias, Carol Parisher of Orange Grove, Sandy McManamy of New Caney, Debbie Robinson of Lake Palmer, Colo., Chucky McManamy of Norwalk, Calif., and Ronnie McManamy of Battleground, Wash.; sisters, Ernestine Belk of Oklahoma City and Tommie Cochron of Odessa; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Services for Ethel "Irene" Griffith, 84, of Odessa will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at the First Assembly of God Church in Odessa with Rev. Gene Allen officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. She was born Nov. 25, 1915, to Jodie and Bettie Thomas in Seymour, Texas, and entered the eternal presence of the Lord Monday, June 12, 2000. She married John Griffith in 1956 in Lovington, N.M. She was a life long member of First Assembly of God Church. The family had owned several dry cleaning establishments including Crestwood Cleaners and Town & Country Cleaners. She resided in Tulsa for several years, returning to Odessa in 1997. She was preceded in death in 1954 by her husband, Paul Thompson; her parents, Rev. Jodie and Bettie Thomas; a brother; and her sister, Lois West. Survivors include her husband of 44 years, John Griffith; her son, Rev. Paul Thompson and wife, Gloria; two grandsons, Wayne Thompson and wife, Stacey, of Grapevine, Texas, and Stuart Thompson and wife, Lesli, of McKinney, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Odessa Cemetery. She was born Sept. 13, 1937, in Odessa. She married Melvin Handy Dec. 22, 1961, in Odessa. Mrs. Handy was a lifelong resident of Odessa. She graduated from Rice University in 1959. She was an elementary teacher for the Ector County School District from 1960 to 1991. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, Mike Handy and wife, LaDonna, of Odessa, Steven Handy and wife, Kay, of Oklahoma City; brother, Charles Beason and wife, Nelda, of Odessa; brother-in-law, Johnny Royal of Camas Valley, Ore.; sisters, Peggy McAnally and husband, Kenneth, of Odessa, Dorothy McNeil and husband, Elray, of Pasadena, Texas, and Faye Broshears and husband, Bill, of Cape Coral, Fla.; four grandchildren, Genene Handy, Reese Robbins, Michael Handy and Brooke Robbins. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at Eisenhower Church of Christ with Eddie Parrish officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. She was born June 27, 1919, in Eastland County. She married Boyce C. Hooper Oct. 28, 1940, in Carbon. Mrs. Hooper and her husband moved to Odessa in 1944 from Eastland County. She was an active volunteer in many organizations. She was a member of the Desk and Derrick Club, The Home Demonstration Club and former president of the Board of Directors of Medical Center Hospital and A.A.R.P. She was an active member of the Eisenhower Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Hooper was a true friend and beloved by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyce C. Hooper; daughters, Ann Brumley and Joy Hooper; grandson, Jeffrey Brumley; and parents, John and Minnie Foster. Survivors include her daughters, Mary L. Smith and husband, John, of Midland, Gloria J. Oliver of Houston and Beth Gesch and husband, Bill, of Odessa; brothers, Carl C. Foster and wife, Jean, of Dallas, and Hatten E. Foster and wife, Yvonne, of Lucedell, Miss.; eight grandchildren, Gregory Brumley and wife, Heather, and his son, Jeffrey Ray, of Oxford, England, Douglas Brumley of Arlington, Amy Martin and husband, Brian, Jason Smith and Jonathan Smith, all of Midland, and Amber Gesch and her daughter, Carmen, of San Angelo, Heather DeLao and her husband, Jeremy, and sons, Jeremy Jr. and Emry of Odessa, and Alias Legesse of Houston. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at St. Marys Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis Frey officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born March 20, 1969, in Alpine. He was raised in Saragosa and moved to Fort Stockton in 1984. He attended school in Fort Stockton and moved to Odessa in 1988 and worked at Big Tex and later became a welder. He was a good husband and father. Survivors include his wife, Dinah Olivas of Odessa; son, Daniel J. Olivas of Odessa; daughters, Angelica Olivas and Justine Olivas, both of Odessa; parents, Sixto R. and Ramona Olivas of Fort Stockton; brothers, Epifanio "Piffy" Olivas of Fort Stockton and Jesus "Chuy" Olivas and wife, Berta, of Odessa; sisters, Josefina "Pepa" Gomez and husband, David, of Fort Stockton; grandmother, Juliana Olivas of Lovington, N.M.; nieces and nephews, Keena, Michael, Savanna, Andre, Maggie and Cassie. Also surviving are his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ilde Paredes and Diane Paredes; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe Paredes and wife, Rene, Vico and Belinda Montes and Jane Paredes.
