June 18, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Alva M. Bennett CRANE -- Alva M. Bennett, 77, of Crane, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, 2000, at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Parker and Steve Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane. Alva was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Gorman to J.H. and Velma Wheeler. She married Vernon E. Bennett in Eastland on May 17, 1941. They have resided in Crane for 41 years. Alva had worked as a school secretary for Greenwood Independent School District and Goddard Junior High School in Midland for eight years. She also had served as church secretary for Fannin Terrace Baptist in Midland. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crane. Alva was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Lavenia Wheeler. She is survived by her husband, Vernon E. Bennett of Crane; two sons, Gary E. Bennett and wife, Anita, of Dallas, and Ted B. Bennett and wife, Karen, of Denver City; three granddaughters, Tammy A. Bruns of Aransas Pass, Joan J. Easterwood and her husband, Calen, of Midland, Bonnie K. Wade and her husband, Brian, of Brownwood; one grandson, Charles L. Sessions of Great Lakes, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Katey and Cris Triggs of Lubbock; one brother, Jack D. Wheeler and his wife, Kate, of Austin; and sister Mary Jo Shaw and her husband, Roy, of Gorman. _________________________________________________________________ MIDLAND -- Samuel Keyum Collins, 19, of Odessa died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at his residence. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1801 N. Carver Ave., in Midland. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 12, 1980, in Odessa. He attended school in Odessa. He graduated from Permian High School May 19, 2000. Survivors include his parents, Darius and Eva Collins of Odessa; brother, Christopher Collins of Odessa; grandparents, Kit and Ester Nelson of Midland; grandmother, Ruth Watkins of Odessa; grandfather, Doris D. Collins of Arkansas City, Kan.; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Katie L. Howard, 91, of Odessa, died at her residence Thursday, June 15, 2000. She was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Stanton. She married H.B. Howard on April 4, 1928, and they lived in Odessa for more than 40 years. Mr. Howard preceded her in death in 1983. She was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church, the Jane Phillips Sorority and several bridge clubs. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2000, in the Chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Dr., Odessa, with the Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Ruby Tacker Wilkerson, 87, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Truman, Ark. Services were Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Park View Church of Christ with Charles Jones officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Wilkerson moved to Odessa Dec. 1, 1957, from Arkansas. She attended Shawnee High School in Joyner, Ark. She married G.A. Tacker on Dec. 29, 1929, in Arkansas. He preceded her in death June 11, 1981. She married Jeff Wilkerson in March 1989. She loved gardening and music and was a great cook. Mrs. Wilkerson was a member of Park View Church of Christ. Mrs. Wilkerson also was preceded in death by her children, Mary Lillian Tacker, Dave Tacker and Charlie Tacker; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is survived by husband, Jeff; sons, George Tacker, Carl Tacker, Rick Tacker and Butch Tacker, all of Odessa; daughters, Molly Upshaw of Spearsville, La., Jenny Duncan and Joyce Tomlin of Odessa; brother, Bill DeSpain of Newbern, Tenn; and sister, Gladys Rose of Ripley, Tenn.
