"CurIey" Brunson ODESSA Walter "Curley" Brunson, 78, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Brunson was born Dec. 31,1921, in Marquez, Texas. Mr. Brunson was a longtime resident of Odessa, having lived here for 39 years. Curley worked for Parker Drilling for 20 years and later owned and operated his own hot shot trucking business, retiring after 27 years. Mr. Brunson was an Army veteran of World War II and enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was also a member of the Sandhill Sams RV Club. Mr. Brunson married Wanda "Dean" Underwood January 17, 1948, in Levelland. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday June 21, 2000, at the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clydell Chapman of Northside Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the funeral home. Mr. Brunson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dean Brunson of Odessa; daughters, Shirley Penn and her husband, Cecil, of Arlington and Tammy Patni and husband, Karem, of Odessa; brother, Alvin Brunson and wife, Eura, of Tomball. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Penn of Arlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are under the professional care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Emma Jeanette Moore, 94, of Odessa died Monday, June 19, 2000. She was born March 30, 1906, in Bartlett, the daughter of Dixie and Ford Wheeler. She married Homer Alton Moore Sept. 24, 1930. They came to Odessa in 1937 and she became involved in activities of the Womens Missionary Society at First Methodist Church where she was a devoted, longtime church member. Mr. Moore preceded her in death in 1970. Emma held numerous offices in United Methodist Women, including presidencies at the local, district and conference levels. She traveled extensively as Womens society of Christian Service President of the Carlsbad District and New Mexico Conference. The Board of Missions awarded her a Sustaining membership in the W.S.C.S. Emma was also a member of Fidelis Sunday School Class. She held several offices and presented many programs for the Pioneer Study Club. She also enjoyed playing bridge in several groups. Emma Moore was a very gentle lady, a giving and loving person, with a kind and encouraging word for all. She is survived by her son, Bill G. Moore and his wife, Daphne, of Odessa; her daughter, Jane Moore Howard of Austin; sister, Doris Ernst of Harlingen; brother, Marvin Wheeler and his wife, Pat, of Corpus Christi; grandson, Michael Moore of Odessa; granddaughters, Janna Melton and her husband, Rus, of Austin, Jolie Howard of Austin and Toni Vanderburg and her husband, Glynn, of Kingsland; 1O great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at the Chapel of First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Lee Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761. Slate, 52, of Odessa died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his residence. He was born July 27, 1948, in Brownwood and moved to Odessa in 1958. He was a former roughneck in the oilfields and U.S. Army veteran. He was a loving dad and "Papa Jack" to his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luke Slate and Ruth Carrell; brother, Leo Slate; and granddaughter, Brooke Wilson. Survivors include his daughter, Karla Wilson and her husband, Michael, of Midland; sons, Jackie Slate of Odessa and Casey Slate of Norton, Kan.; sisters, Lona Wilkinson of Odessa and Helen Slate of Oklahoma City; brothers, Lynn Slate of Thorton, Colo., and Larry Slate of Cannon City, Colo.; grandchildren, Jared and Lexie Wilson. He is also survived by his former wife and care taker, Glenda Blum; and special friends, Vert Curry of Brownwood and Frank Cory of Odessa. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Strempke officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. He was born May 6, 1948, in Odessa. Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Odessa. He was a 1966 graduate of Permian High School. He was a truck driver for Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals for 20 years before his retirement. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and being with his family and friends. He was a Methodist. He was a member of the Andy G. Vaughn Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his sons, Michael Johnson and Don Johnson, both of Odessa; mother, Charlotte Johnson of Odessa; brothers, Bob Johnson of Pueblo, Colo.; and his sons, Ben, Adam and Andrew Johnson; sister, Rebecca Ann Parker of Lake Charles, La., and her son, Daniel Parker.
