June 25, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Pansy Authement went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, June 24, 2000. Pansy was born to Robert Strippling and Betty Pickette Strippling on Jan. 4, 1906, in Fife, Texas. Pansy was the youngest of six children, and she loved to tell stories of her now-famous great-uncle, Gen. George Pickette of the Confederate States. Pansy was reared in Big Spring, Texas. After graduating from Big Spring High School in the early 1920s, she set off for Fort Worth, where she attended beauty college. Upon graduating, Pansy then moved to Odessa, where she became one of the first female business owners in Ector County by opening the very first beauty shop in Odessa. The beauty shop was originally located in the back of the old Graham department store. She then met the man of her dreams in Enoch J. Authement; they were married in 1929. After becoming more established in the community, Pansy was able to purchase her own building on Second Street. After being in business about 20 years, Pansy turned in her scissors and brushes for a much tougher job. She and her husband, Enoch, joined forces with the Ector County Child Welfare Department and became part of the foster care program. During the 20 years that the Authements participated in the foster program, they kept more than 150 infants and children. Enoch preceded her in death in 1964. Pansy is survived by her only son, Dr. Enoch "Nick" Authement and his wife, Peggy, of Folsom, La.; and her only daughter, Judith Adams and husband, Mackie, of Odessa; five grandchildren, David Authement, Noel Authement, Ginger Windham, Shawn Stringer and Brian Cole; seven great-grandchildren, Chase Authement, Justin Authement, Kyle Windham, Kelsey Stringer, Hannah Stringer, Austen Cole and Alysha Cole; and also two very dear friends which she considered to be her own daughters, Mildred Teas of Dallas and Mary Sarver of Hobbs, N.M., and their families. She is also survived by four nieces and one nephew. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at St. Marys Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernardito Getigan as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Renay Cabrera, 17 years of age, passed away on June 24, 2000. He was born Oct. 18, 1982, in Lubbock. Renay was a student at Odessa High School. Renay was preceded in death by his grandparents Theodoro Cabrera and Bernardo Hinojos Sr. He is survived by his parents, Raul and Rose Cabrera of Odessa; his brothers, Roddy H. Cabrera and Rudy H. Cabrera, both of Odessa; sister, Roxana H. Cabrera of Odessa; grandparents, Consuelo Hinojos and Antonia Cabrera, both of Odessa; and one nephew, Ronnie Cabrera, also of Odessa. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Odessa Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel, located at 1700 N. Jackson Ave. with the Rev. Services by Odessa Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Kathryn Sue Mangrum Crawford KERMIT Kathryn Sue Mangrum Crawford, 66, of Kermit died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Mike Fickenscher officiating. Burial will be at Kermit Cemetery. She was a co-owner and operator of Longhorn Service and Drilling. She married Bobby D. Crawford on Oct. 16, 1954 in Wink. He preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1984. She was a Lutheran and a lifetime member of the University of Texas Exes. She was a 40-year resident of Kermit. She is survived by her son, Kris Crawford of Kermit; daughters, Kim Crawford of San Antonio and Kay Crawford Gilmore of Early; sisters, Lettie Foss of Shell Knob, Mo. and Ruth Williams of Oregon; grandchildren, Wesley Crawford, Elizabeth Crawford and Ashley Crawford all of Kermit and Clayton Crawford of Early; and stepgrandchildren, Kyle Gilmore and Lindsay Gilmore, both of Early. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Florene L. Gardner, 81, of Odessa passed away Saturday, June 24, 2000, in a local nursing home. Mrs. Gardner was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Oklahoma. She had been a longtime resident of Marble Falls, Texas, and moved to Odessa a few years ago. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Marble Falls and was a member of the Methodist Church. She married Walter R. Gardner on Dec. 19, 1936. He preceded her in death on August 27, 1981. She is survived by two sons, Freddie Gardner of Odessa and Lonnie Gardner of Alvin, Texas; a daughter, Virginia Lamberton of San Diego; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dikes was born March 10, 1913, in Goldthwaite, Texas. She married Alvin J. Dikes on October 26, 1935, in Permila, Texas, and he preceded her in death in February, 1990. She had been a resident of Odessa from 1967 to 1992 when she moved to Norman, Okla., to be near her family. She had been a worker in the nursery and day care for Sherwood Baptist Church for more than 10 years. She is survived by her son, Jim W. Dikes of Norman; daughter, Jackie M. Cobb of Enumclaw, Wash.; brother, Tom Thompson of Jonesboro, Texas; sister, Lorene Berryhill of Dallas; and two grandchildren, James E. Cobb of Dallas and Wendy Joy Dikes of Menlo Park, Calif. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Johnnie Lois Maxey ODESSA She was born in Pioneer, Texas, Nov. 18, 1927, to the late John Brown Gordon and Evadne Lewis. Johnnie graduated from Grandfalls Royalty High School in 1945 and graduated from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in art. She was a bookkeeper at Midland and Permian high schools for many years. She was very involved in the community and as an active member of many organizations and clubs, such as American Business Womens Association, Permian Basin Grandmothers Club, Investment Club, Permian Basin Porcelain Arts Club, Sage Brush, China Painting Teachers of Texas, World Organization of China Painters and State Federation Porcelain Arts Club of Texas. Johnnie had her own art studio and enjoyed teaching private lessons in her home and providing demonstrations for the community. She also taught water aerobics at the YMCA. Johnnie loved life. Her vibrant spirit and nurturing gifts touched many lives. She was loved by all her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Gordon Walker Sullins. Survivors include her son John Scott Sullins and his wife, Ann, of Victoria; best friend and companion, Bunky Hunt of Odessa and his children, Becky Morris and D.B. Hunt; sister, Rose Evadne Raschae of Odessa; niece, Rose Marie Boatman and her husband, Lloyd, of Carlsbad, N.M.; nephew, Cary Lee Iness of Odessa; grandchildren, Robby and Jimmy Hembree, Ryan and Matthew Truby and Hillary Hunt; great-nieces and nephews, Shay and Wanda Boatman, Heath and Shelly Boatman, Jamey and Stacy Schwiger, Glen and Eva Mitchell, Joe Iness, Hondo and Christy Iness; and 10 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Anita Doris McCormick, 79, of Springfield, Mo., passed away at 2:22 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2000, in the Manor at Elfindale. Doris was born Jan. 14, 1921 in McAlester, Okla. to David Lewis and Evelyn McCay Templeton. She graduated from McAlester High School. She was married to Frank K. McCormick on Oct. 17, 1940. He was a longtime employee of El Paso Natural Gas Co. They lived in Goldsmith for many years and later in Odessa before moving to Springfield in 1985. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, David and Louie Templeton; and her husband, who died Feb. 1, 1994. She is survived by two daughters, Kay Miller and her husband, Lowell, of Springfield, Mo., and Mary Ivy and her husband, Larry, of Fairfield; four grandchildren, Audra Robinson and her husband, Blake, of Fairfield, Mark Miller and his wife, Natalie, of Nixa, Mo., Todd Miller and his wife, Gina, of Springfield, Mo., and Mike Miller of Kansas City, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Miller and Ivy Robinson. The family wishes to extend its love and deep appreciation to the staff of the Manor at Elfindale for their dedicated and devoted care of Doris for the past four years. Sunshine, Springfield, Mo., 65804. _________________________________________________________________ BIG SPRING William Allen Triplett, age 74, of Odessa died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his home in Odessa with his family present. Mr. Triplett had a very successful career as an insurance salesman with A.U.C. Insurance Company. Memorial services will be at a later date. He was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Oklahoma City. William was the son of Velma Laura and Ervin Eugene Triplett I, and he had two brothers, Erbin E. Triplett and Jackie Triplett. They all preceded him in death. He married Louise Matilda Triplett on Sept. 29, 1948, at First Christian Church in Oklahoma City. They had three children, Mark Allen, Tracy Ann and Kevin Scott. Louise preceded him in death at age 50 in May 1980. He served the U.S. Coast Guard on a destroyer escort during World War II, and then graduated from Oklahoma City University with a degree in accounting. He married Virginia Gay Jones on January 1, 1981. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Goldsmith. Survivors include his wife, Gay, of Odessa; sons and wives, Mark Allen and Nilsa Triplett of Plano and Kevin Scott and Stacy Triplett of Round Rock, Texas; one daughter, Tracy Ann Triplett of Austin; one stepson, Jack L. McMahan of Colbert, Okla.; one stepdaughter and her husband, Leslie Ann and Steve Timmons of Lubbock; five grandchildren, William Mark and Catherine Louise of Plano, Jessie Lyn and Amy McMahan of Colbert, Okla., lan Chase Timmons of Lubbock; and one great-grandson, Aaron Lane McMahan; and two special cousins, Jack and Stephanie Rahm. Other special people he leaves behind are friends Fayne and Betty Shead, Jessie and Lois Chisum, Bob and Sue Bybee, Mike and Ocha Moore, and Red and Cly Flenniken. A heartfelt thanks to Dr. James K. "Jenks" Roberts KERMIT Retired First Sgt. Marvin O. "Jenks" Roberts, 60, a 22-year resident of Kermit, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Odessa Medical Center. He was born in Harris Valley on Dec. 8, 1939, the fourth son of Floyd and Mary Jenkins Roberts. He proudly served for 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. He was sent to Cuba during the missile crisis and was also a Vietnam veteran. He married Sarah Herring on Dec. 29, 1964 in Cotulla. After retiring to West Texas, he worked in the oilfield, took the 1990 Census and ran the Phillips gas station in Kermit. He most recently worked as the community service coordinator for Winkler County Probation Office and served as the State District Court and Winkler County Court bailiff. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sarah H. Roberts; a daughter, Sarah Beth Roberts of San Antonio; a daughter, Mary Frances Alvarado of Fort Worth; a grandson, Cody Robert Alvarado of Fort Worth; five brothers, Cecil F. Roberts of Cotulla, James A. Roberts of Dickinson, N.D., George E. Roberts of Edgewood, Md., Harry L. Roberts of San Antonio, and Donald L. Roberts of Corpus Christi; one sister, Rosemary Talkington of Alice; and many beloved relatives and friends across the nation. He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Robert Lee Roberts Sr. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Kermit with the Rev. Beth Harrington officiating. Burial will follow at the Kermit Cemetery.
