June 27, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA J.L. Gandy Jr., 77, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 25, 2000, in a local hospital. Mr. Gandy was born May 30, 1923, in Jewett, Texas, to J. L. and Maggie Gandy Sr. He was a veteran of the Army and served in World War II. He came to Odessa in 1953 and had been the principal for Reagan Elementary School for many years. He later retired from Ector County Independent School District after 47 years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, International Reading Association, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association and past president for the Ector County Unit of the Texas State Teachers Association. He married Marilyn Davidson Stell June 27, 1987, in Odessa. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy McConnell Gandy. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Gandy of Odessa; son, Mathew Gandy and his wife, Kelly, and children, Bailey and Garrison, of Fort Worth; step-sons, David Stell and his wife, Carolyn, and children, Justin, Seth and Alora, of Dallas, Stephen Stell and his wife, Jeanna, and children, Brittany, Tyler and Kristen, of Temple and Mark Stell and his wife, Jeannette, and children, Madison and Carson, of Roseville, Calif.; sisters, Lona Thompson of Rockdale, Nell Stone of Victoria and Dorothy Gandy of Marlin. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sherry Holloman officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. His son and step-sons will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Nelson Allison, Marion Luper, Bruce Almond, Glen Chapman, Hector Mendez and Ed Wynne. The family requests memorials be made to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761. All the family and friends are invited to the home following the services for refreshments. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Sidney Clark "Red" Shaw, 94 of Odessa, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born March 13, 1906, in Kemp. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Shaw was raised in Eustace at the age of 15 he moved to New York City and worked for Western Union. He married Edna Roney Aug. 5, 1937, in New York. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served in World War II. After the war, he moved to Houston and worked Eason Oil Company and later for Humble Oil Company. He later moved to Odessa with what is now Exxon as a communications specialist. He retired in 1967 and fully enjoyed his retirement, he loved to hunt and fish and was a good tennis player. He loved to have fun and had little tolerance for those who did not. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Della Shaw; brother, Truxton Shaw; and sisters, Mable Shaw and Thelma Akins. He is survived by brothers, W R. Shaw of Longview; B.K. Shaw of StilIwater, Okla., and Wayne Shaw of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. (www. wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ Doris Florence Tippit SEATTLE Born Jan. 1, 1923, on a stormy night in Tulsa, Okla., Dolores Florence Tippit died Friday, June 23, 2000, in Seattle. She moved with her parents at the age of five months to an apartment on First Hill in Seattle. The family moved the following year to Portland, Ore., and a year later to Roseburg, Ore. The following year, her father was transferred to Oakland, Calif. Subsequently they moved to Healton, Okla., and later to Salt Lake City, where Doris graduated from high school. She graduated from the University of Utah with honors and a major in chemistry. She then began work in Dr. Vincent Kelleys Pediatric Endocrinology lab at the University of Utah Medical School. In 1958, she moved to Seattle to continue her medical technology work in pediatric endocrinology at the University of Washington Medical School, where she retired in 1985. Her father, Howard, died in Salt Lake City in April 1947. Her mother, Florence, died in 1981, but, before her death, she and Doris traveled extensively in the western United States and in Canada during every vacation. Doris was a football fan, and until 1999 was able to go to the Kelleys home and watch the New Years Day bowl games and to celebrate her birthday the same day. She was very active in the Ravenna United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and designed and made many of the churchs banners. She had accepted Christ as her Savior in 1941 at Centenary Methodist Church in Salt Lake City. Several years ago Doris was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease. She is survived by her uncle, Wilbur F. Roberts Sr. and wife, Nettie, of Odessa; aunts, Laverne Roberts of Independence, Mo., and Sue Roberts of Valiant, Okla.; cousins, Judge W. F. "Corky" Roberts and wife, Tonya, of Amarillo, Roy E. Roberts and wife, Linda, of Independence, Mo., Jerry W. Roberts Sr. and wife, Faye, of Odessa and Janice Roberts of Oklahoma City; and also a very special friend, Dorothy Kelley and her family of Seattle; and numerous friends. Memorial service for Doris will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Ravenna United Methodist Church, 5751 33rd Avenue NE, Seattle. Burial will be in Salt Lake City, near her parents.
