July 12, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Maria Delia Valenzuela Gonzales ODESSA Maria Delia Valenzuela Gonzales, 69, of Odessa, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Delia was born Nov. 22, 1930, in Fort Stockton, to Monico Lujan Valenzuela and Petra Hernandez Valenzuela. She married Antonio Minjarez Gonzales on Jan. 12, 1947, in Fort Stockton and moved to Odessa in 1950. Delia Gonzales was a retired Ector County Independent School District food service manager for 20 years. She received numerous awards for her accomplishments as a food service manager and her dedication for food nutrition of elementary children. She also was an instructor at Odessa College. Delia was a member and a founder of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and served as president of the Altar Society. She also was president of the Parish Council, the Diocese Council and a member of the Mexican American Student Association. Survivors include her husband, Antonio Minjarez Gonzales of Odessa; sons, Antonio V. Gonzales of Kennedale and Raymond V. Gonzales of Odessa; daughters, Linda Ann Gunn of Odessa, Betsy Tenneson of Clyde, Patsy Allen of Abilene, Barbara Kay Sedillos of Andrews and Monica Charlene Perez of Odessa; sister, Henrietta Gonzales of Odessa; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Arrangements are bring conducted by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Marie Roberts ANDREWS Funeral services for Marie Roberts, 74, of Andrews will be at 2 p.m. today at the Second Baptist Church in Andrews with the Rev. Ivy Shelton, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Sharon Suttle of Midland will be assisting. Burial will be in the Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews. She died Monday, July 10, 2000, at her residence. She was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Rising Star. She moved to Andrews in 1939. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1944. She had worked for Humble Oil Company and as an office manager for Carl S. Ham, Inc., both in Andrews. She married James W. Roberts April 18, 1946, in Andrews. They moved to Waco and returned to Andrews in 1950. In 1960, Roberts Publishing Company was formed as a corporation. Roberts Publishing Company owns interest in papers in Andrews, Azle, Brownfield, Gatesville, Granbury, Hereford, Lamesa, Quanah, Seminole, Springtown, Snyder and Vernon. She was a member of the Andrews Study Club and a member of the First Baptist Church in Andrews. Her husband, James W. Roberts, died Dec. 20, 1997. She is survived by her sons, Phillip Roberts of Waco, Randall and Banna Roberts of Andrews; family friend, Sharon Suttle of Midland; three grandchildren, Blake Roberts, Brittanie Roberts and Karley Roberts. _________________________________________________________________ Joseph Garner ODESSA Joseph Garner, 88, of Odessa, passed away at his home July 10, 2000. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. William Chapman officiating. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Garner was born March 14, 1912, in Eastland County, to Edgar and Martha Blair Garner. He married Jessie Florence Mercer Sept. 25, 1938, in Woodson. He had worked as a ranch hand for most of his life. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Florence Garner of Odessa; son, Billy Edd Garner of Odessa; his daughters, Delores Garner and Pat Carrell, both of Odessa; his sisters, Sally Ann Tucker of Chandler, Ariz., and Edith Richardson; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 2000 Odessa American.
