July 18, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ John Sliney ODESSA Services for John Sliney, 68, of Odessa, are scheduled at noon Friday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Sliney died Friday, July 14, 2000, from complications of cancer. He was born during the Depression in Brockton, Mass., a suburb of Boston, and came to Texas in the mid-1950s courtesy of the United States Air Force. After serving a three-year tour of duty in Korea, he moved to Waco, where he received his honorable discharge. He then went to work as a reporter for the daily newspaper there for several years before accepting a similar position in Odessa. He was hired at the Odessa American and rose from the ranks of cub reporter to city editor in his nearly two decades at the newspaper. In the late 1970s, he left the Odessa American and accepted a position as an investigator for noted Odessa criminal-defense lawyer Warren Burnett. He was affiliated with the Ector County Democratic Party. Survivors include a son, John Sliney Jr. of Hereford; a daughter, Stephanie Orsini of Odessa; and four grandchildren. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Bill Hargis ODESSA Bill "Peewee" Hargis, 75, of Odessa, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born May 17, 1925, in Davenport, Okla. He married Dorothy Brewer Dec. 13, 1968, in Lubbock and moved to Odessa from Corpus Christi in 1976. He was a retired repairman for Occidental Petroleum and attended Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a number one fan of helping others, enjoyed fishing, talking, and motorcycles. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Hargis in 1994 and grandson, Darrel Lewis in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Odessa; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa Morgan and Cameron of Lubbock and Susan Holmes and Mike of Odessa; sons, David Brewer of Mission and Jim Hargis of Whiteface; and daughter-in-law Marolyn Hargis of Midland. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Elmo Hargis of McAllen; and sister, Jo Floyd of Monahans. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Dr. Mark Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
