August 25, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Wesley Monroe "W.M." Byrd came to the end of his lifes journey Aug. 23, 2000. Graveside services for Mr. Byrd will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Qualls officiating. The family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Byrd began his life Sept. 8, 1923, in Jesse, Okla., where he was born to Jeff Byrd and Alma Goodrich. W.M. married Dorothy Mary Killion. She preceded him in death. From this marriage, came two sons, Curtis Byrd of Tyler and Wayne Byrd of Big Lake. Both survive their father. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, from his first marriage, also survive their grandfather. After his wife of 43 years passed away in 1984, Mr. Byrd married Ida Jean Scott. Mr. Byrd received Mike Rowe and Andy Rowe as his new sons. W.M. and Ida Jean had celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. Mr. Byrd was a resident of Odessa since 1952. Many of you will recall him as a skilled carpenter and a master craftsman. Mr. Byrd was employed by J. Gary Whitehead for the past 25 years. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Wylie "Lucky" "Toby" Coleman Landreth, age 81, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, of natural causes. Born March 11, 1919, in Thurber to Emzley Van Landreth and Rosie Bell Chestnut, he spent most his childhood in Knox County on the Bush and Burnett Ranch. He served four and a half years (March 1941 October 1945) during World War II with the 57th Field Artillery, Battery B, Seventh Infantry Division, final rank Technician Fifth Grade. Island campaigns included Attu in the Aleutian Islands, Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, Leyte in the Southern Philippines and Okinawa of Ryukyu in Japan. Decorations include Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, American Defense Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon (4 Battle Stars) and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (2 Battle Stars). He was a lifetime member of the VFW. He moved to Odessa in 1948 and served 32 years with the fire department. He also owned and operated ABC Rug and Carpet Cleaning. He became a Christian in 1953 at Trinity Baptist Church where he served as deacon before moving his membership in the early 60s to his current church, Sherwood Baptist. He was preceded in death by first wife, Laura Regina Morris (married Jan. 1953, died Nov. 1953); second wife, Gladys Ruth Webb (married 1955, died July 1997); brothers Elmer and Lee both of Rule; and half-sister, Lillie Tucker of Waco. Survivors include sons, Rodney Landreth and wife Susan of San Antonio and Gary Landreth of Big Spring; brother, Cranford Landreth of Perryton; brothers-in-law, Elmer Lawrence Webb and wife Shirley of Carriere, Miss., Billie Joe Webb of Midland; sisters-in-law, Betty Ruth Landreth of Knox City and Mavis Webb of Midland. Military graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Eva V. Tovar, 50 years of age, passed away on Aug. 24, 2000, at her Odessa residence. She was born March 18, 1950, in Marathon. She was a beautician and a member of the Catholic Church. Mrs. Tovar is survived by her husband, Marcos Tovar of Odessa; daughters, Amy Tarango and Paz Acosta, both of Odessa; brothers, Jesus Villarreal, Lolo Villarreal, Manuel Villarreal, Jose Villarreal and Adan Villarreal, all of Odessa, and Tony Villarreal of Marathon; sister, Vicky Aguilar of Crane, Elodia Martinez of Odessa, Maria Ellena Mondova and Elida Fierro, both of Alpine; grandchildren, Zackery Noah Tovar, Arissa Eva Acosta, Joey Acosta, Steven Acosta and Alyssa Acosta. Rosary will be recited today at 7 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Chavez officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tony Acosta, Rogelio Tarango, Pete Avila, Simon Tovar, Jessie Acosta and Efrain Rodriguez.
