October 10, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Lindy Lee Brown ODESSA Lindy Lee Brown, 12, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at a local hospital. Lindy was born May 13, 1988, in Odessa. She attended Nimitz Junior High School and was in the band. She loved to swim and cook and enjoyed wildflowers, her family and special occasions. She will be remembered as a special and happy little girl. She is survived by her parents, John O. and Lori Brown of Odessa; paternal grandparents, Nell and David Waldrip of Odessa and John E. Brown of Odessa; maternal grandparents, Larry Clevenger of Kalamazoo, Mich.; maternal great-grandmother, Virginia Westfall of Odessa; sister, Robin Lynn Brown of Odessa; aunts and uncles, Lisa Hall, Jay and Lisa Brown, Rick and Peggy Westfall, Mark and Debbie Westfall and Jean Clevenger; and 15 cousins. Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rick Westfall officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Eliseo Marichalar, 72, a resident of Odessa since 1963, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born June 28, 1928, in Crystal City to Maria Valdez and Amado Marichalar. Both preceded him in death. He was a retired crane operator for Commercial Metals. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 9 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Martinez Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Josefina Marichalar of Odessa; daughters, Aracelia Olivas of Odessa, Haydee Marichalar of Midland and Bertha Perez of Houston; sons, Noe Marichalar, Ray Marichalar, Al Marichalar, Hector Marichalar, Armando Marichalar and Damon Marichalar, all of Odessa, and Jesse Marichalar of Midland; brother, Carlos Borjon of Piedras Negras, Mexico; sisters, Elidia Rios of Crystal City and Norma Garcia of Eagle Pass; 30 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Wesley Newman Minton, beloved husband, Father, Papa and friend, went to be with his Lord Oct. 7, 2000, at his home. Wes was born March 3, 1938, in Snyder. He attended Rotan High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He attended Rice on an athletic scholarship and then returned to San Angelo College where he played football and baseball. He married Laverne Tennis of San Angelo Feb. 19, 1957, in Paint Rock. Wes worked for pipelines and the railroad in Sierra Blanca, Slaton, Odessa and Midland. He began his career in the oilfield in Fort Stockton in 1970, continuing in McCamey and Mertzon with TXO Corporation from 1977 to 1990, and was currently employed with Coastal Management in Penwell. He was a member of Odessa Christian Faith Center. Wes always valued sports and young people. He served as a football official in the 80s, and continually volunteered his services as an auctioneer and umpire at many church and community functions. Wes was respected by all he knew and his memories will be cherished by many. His father, Lester Minton, mother, Naoma Minton, and sister, Gayle Minton, preceded Wes in death. Wes is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laverne of Odessa; three daughters, Julie Worster of Sanderson, Resa Tyree and son-in-law Mark Tyree of Fort Stockton and Heidi Gesch and son-in-law Rory Gesch of Spur. Wes had six grandchildren, Chessa Gesch, Kynsee Gesch, Sam Worster, Jason Tyree, Amber Tyree and Kara Tyree, and also many family members and dear friends. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Odessa Christian Faith Center by Pastor Don Caywood. Interment will be at 4 p.m. today at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Jason Tyree and Sam Worster along with Joe Crawford and the men of Coastal Management. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the American Cancer Society or the Odessa Christian Faith Center Solomon Project. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ OKLAHOMA CITY James Frank Ocker went to be with our Lord Oct. 8, 2000, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 15, 1926, in Rosebud. Following his high school graduation in 1943, Jim entered the Navy V-12 program and graduated in three years with a degree in Business Administration and a commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy. After his naval service, he returned to the University of Texas where he completed his masters degree. He married Kathryn Virginia Westmoreland in 1949. In 1950, they moved to Odessa where he was the Director of the Business Department at Odessa College. Jim was a partner in the accounting firm of Banisky, Ocker & Anderson in Odessa from 1956 to 1962. He was a partner in Stelchrome Inc. from 1962 to 1972. He then moved to Oklahoma City to become vice president for the Texas International Petroleum Company. In 1974, Jim became a partner in the Amity Care Corporation. During the next 20 years, he served on numerous boards including Southwestern Bank and Hillcrest Hospital. He retired in the mid 90s. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Oklahoma City and three sons and their families, James Kyle, June, Jimmy and Alicia of Oklahoma City, Lindsay Lyle of Oklahoma City and Lon J., Kris, Kate, John and Jacob of Norman, Okla. A sister, Anita Hauk, of Cameron and a brother, Robert, of Gretna, La., also survive him. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Vondel L. Smith and Sons, 6934 S. Western, with Interment Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Rosebud. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Thomas Edward Schaefer, 64, of Odessa, succumbed to cancer at his home Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000. He was born July 23, 1936, in Weehawken, N.J. He married Frances Marie Brosky in 1962 in Washington D.C. He had been a resident of Odessa since 1978. Dr. Tom Schaefer was a professor of business administration and recently taught in the history department and the John Ben Shepperd Institute of Leadership at UTPB. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Santa Clara, his masters degree from Loyola University in Chicago and his doctorate of philosophy degree at Georgetown University. He attained a masters degree in business from the University of San Francisco and his doctorate in education from Texas Tech University. He served as the director of the Small Business Institute at UTPB from 1981 to 1995. He ran for the U.S. Congressional District in 1984. He had served as a founding member and the chairman of the board for the Servants of the Poor from 1982 to 2000. He served on numerous other boards in the community, including the American Red Cross. He became vested as a Novice Oblate Benedictine and was an honorary member of the Third Order of Franciscans. He was an athlete who loved running, biking and basketball. Tom Schaefer will be greatly missed as an educator and a beloved friend, father and husband. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Schaefer in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Frances; eight children, Margaret Schaefer of Midland, Michael Schaefer and wife Anne of Pearland, Martin Schaefer of Odessa, John Schaefer and wife Sara of Odessa, Dominic Schaefer of Odessa, Teresa Schaefer of Midland, Nancy Schaefer of New York City and Jennifer Smith and her husband Brian of Odessa; a brother, George Schaefer of Oakland, N.J.; a granddaughter, Monica Schaefer; and four grandsons, Jerred, Kyle, Steven and Dylan Schaefer. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at St. Marys Catholic Church with cremation to follow. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
