October 19, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA Sue Montgomery Walker passed away peacefully Oct. 17, 2000. Sue was born Oct. 18, 1909, in San Angelo. She was the second of four daughters born to Joe and Pearl Montgomery, a pioneer Pecos County ranching family. She spent her early years on the ranch. The family eventually moved to Fort Stockton in order for Sue and her sisters to attend the public schools. She graduated from Fort Stockton High School and attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth before returning to Fort Stockton. On April 12, 1932, she married Homer Walker of San Antonio in Fort Stockton. Homer worked in the Pecos County State Bank for several years before devoting full time to the ranching business, which is still in operation. Homer predeceased her Nov. 9, 1977. Sue was involved in all aspects of life in Fort Stockton where she resided for nearly 90 years. She was active in the First Christian Church where she was a member for seventy years. She was a member of Magno Usui Study Club, Pioneer Club, Tuesday Club and many other organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Pearl Montgomery; her husband, Homer Walker; and her sisters, Louise Montgomery Fulk, Jo Ann Montgomery Moore and Peggy Montgomery Brooks. She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Furman and husband Mike of Odessa; three grandchildren, Scott Furman and wife Kenda of Fort Stockton, Susan Furman of Denver and Stacy Zipkes and husband Steve of Marfa. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Lynzi and Madison Furman and Logan and Matthew Zipkes. Additional survivors include her sister-in-law, Marjorie Butz of Buchanan Dam; brother-in-law, Wayne Moore of Midland; four nieces; five nephews; and devoted friend Elida Rodriquez. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at First Christian Church in Fort Stockton. Interment will follow at Easthill Cemetery. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ Madge Bernice Shriver BIG SANDY Madge Bernice Schriver, formerly of Odessa, passed away Oct. 17, 2000, at the age of 77. She was born in Upshire County May 30, 1923, the daughter of Herman and Pearl Barber McCollum. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Schriver; her son, Joe Kimbrough; and daughters, Carolyn Folsom and Delores Wallace. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Casady and husband James of Alvin; sons, Jerry Lee Kimbrough of Cold Springs and Shelton Ervin Schriver and wife Linda of Pasadena; sister, Juanita Chrilchuck of Gilmer; brothers, Gene Austin McCollum of Big Sandy, Norman Lewis McCollum of Bastrop and Ronald McCollum of Longview; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Shady Grove Cemetery in Big Sandy with the Rev. Darrell Streeter officiating. Burial will follow. He was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Mathis to Irene Ramirez and Ramon Zapata. He had been a resident of Loraine before moving to Odessa two-and-a-half years ago. He was a retired truck driver and a Catholic. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday at Martinez Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his father, Ramon Zapata; mother, Irene Ramirez; and sisters, Maria Lena, Maria De La Luz and Lina Mae Garcia. He is survived by his wife, Ester Zapata of Odessa; sons, Edward Moreno of Barlett, Daniel Zapata Jr. of Plainview, Carl Zapata and Erasmo Zapata, both of Waterproof, La., Ricky Zapata, Eugene Zapata, Christopher Zapata and Mark Zapata, all of Odessa; daughters, Lina Hernandez of Fort Meade, Fla., Jenny Zapata of Wauchula, Fla., Elizabeth Ortiz of Waterproof and Norma Baca of Houston; brothers, Richard Zapata, Thomas Zapata and Trinida Zapata, all of George West, Ramon Zapata of Phoenix, Eugenio Zapata of Freer and David Zapata of Corpus Christi; sisters, Mae Guerrero of Fresno, Calif., Rebecca Gamboa, Natalia Solis, Rosa Zapata and Benny Castaneda, all of George West, and Geneva Arriaga of Bastrop; 36 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
