His was a rags-to-riches story. Forced to drop out of school in fifth grade because of financial problems, Mr. Marquez eventually became the owner of a multimillion-dollar business, which included three bakeries that supplied flour tortillas to businesses across Texas. Mr. Marquez was born July 24, 1944, in Piedras Negras, Mexico, across the border from Eagle Pass. The youngest of 14 children, his brother Gilberto taught him to make Mexican sweet breads when he was 14. Mr. Marquez later moved to San Antonio, where he made sweet breads for Mi Tierra restaurant for two years and continued to improve his culinary skills. He returned to Piedras Negras and sold doughnuts out of his home before moving back to San Angelo when the owner of the Villareal Bakery sought him out. Although Mr. Marquez took a pay cut to move back to San Angelo from $150 a week as doughnut maker in Piedras Negras to $60 a week in San Angelo, he had wanted to live in the United States since he was a young boy. His daughter Norma Alvarez said last year, I like this country, Mr. Marquez said simply in an interview last year. After working for a couple of years at Villareal, he asked the owner for a raise. He was then receiving $70 a week plus $30 a week for rent. When I asked him for a raise, he said, Its best if you take the bakery, Mr. Marquez said. In 1972, Marquez officially bought the business for $16,000. The Marquezes had three daughters, Lucy, Norma and Sally. As their family expanded so did their business. They bought another bakery in Odessa and expanded the San Angelo bakery. When Mr. Marquez and Lucy Marquez divorced, Norma was attending the University of Texas at Arlington. Mr. Marquez moved to Arlington and opened his first Arlington bakery in 1990 at 1719 E. Abram St. His daughters Norma and Sally eventually joined him in the business. In 1996, they built a larger bakery at 1730 E. Division St., and added a restaurant. They make everything that is sold there except for the candy and the drinks, Alvarez said last year. The red-and-white Marquez label is stamped on thousands of bags of flour tortillas that are sold every day to customers such as Joe T. Garcias and El Fenix restaurants. Greg Vaquera, president of the Arlington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said Monday that he and other members of the chamber feel a deep personal grief. We have lost a needed and valued member of our team, Vaquera said. Survivors include his wife, Ester of Arlington; daughters, Lucy Marquez of San Angelo, Norma Alvarez of Arlington and Sally Marquez of Arlington; grandchildren, Paul Marquez of San Angelo, Karina Alvarez of Arlington and Klarissa Alvarez of Arlington. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2021 New York Ave. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 2000 Odessa American.
