November 16, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Leonard Elton Granbery ODESSA Leonard Elton Granbery, 76, of De Kalb passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Okla. He was born June 21, 1924, in De Kalb. He married Lucile Jones Oct. 30, 1948, in Monahans. Mr. Granbery retired from Mobil Oil Company in 1985. He worked in drilling and production in Ozona, Lovington, N.M., and many years in the Odessa area. Upon his retirement, he was compressor field operator at the Pegasus and Parks Fields. He was very loving and devoted to his wife of 52 years. They had one son, Jim, whom he was so proud of. Leonard was a highly respected man who knew hard work. He was a sincere and honest man. He loved the outdoors, working with his livestock and gardening. His life was his family, and his grandchildren were the highlight of his life. He was a longtime member of United Pentecostal Church of Odessa. He moved to De Kalb in 1995. Pallbearers will be Bill Culvahouse, Wayne Culvahouse, Sherman Norwood, James Hornbuckle, Benny Henderson and Billy Jack Price. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terry Pugh and Bill Stroud officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Granbery; his mother, Sally Granbery; and one nephew, Danny Granbery. Survivors include wife, Lucile Granbery of De Kalb; son, Jimmy Granbery and wife, Glynis, of Odessa; granddaughters, Schannon Bell and husband, Tommy, of Odessa, and Annie Rex and husband, Marty, of Odessa; grandson, David Granbery of Weatherford; five great-grandsons, Doc and Morgan Rex and Grant, Brendel and Reece Bell of Odessa; two stepgrandsons, David and Danny Cutright of Odessa; sisters, Ethel Miller and Myrtis Barr of De Kalb; and brother, Charles and wife Beverly of De Kalb. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Fern Evelyn Gilbert Benson ODESSA Graveside services for Fern Evelyn Gilbert Benson, 88, of Odessa are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. David Mindel officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church at Sixth Street and Lee Avenue. Mrs. Benson died Tuesday night, Nov. 14, 2000, at her residence. She was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Moberly, Mo. She married Earl Benson in 1943 in Cushing, Okla. Fern and her husband moved to Odessa in 1952 and joined the First Christian Church, where Fern had been an active member through the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Benson; and her sons, Kenneth Benson and James S. Benson. Survivors include her daughters, Fern Clemmer of Odessa, Joan Hacker of Alabama and Pat Brown of Lubbock; daughter-in-law, Diane Benson of Midland; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Billie "Bill" Lee Harden ODESSA Services for Billie "Bill" Lee Harden, 89, of Odessa are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, Nov. 16, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Harden died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at his residence. He was born Jan. 13, 1911, in Roff, Okla. He married Viola Herring on April 17, 1937, in Tulsa, Okla. Mr. Harden was a retired drilling superintendent for Hamilton Brothers Oil Co. He is survived by his wife, Viola Harden of Odessa; son, Danny Harden and wife, Gerry, of San Angelo; daughter, Susan Jernigan of Houston; five grandchildren, Steve Jernigan of Houston, Christy McGinnis and husband, Spencer, of San Antonio, Stephanie Smith and husband, Clay, of Dallas, David Harden of Dallas and Cindy Harden of San Angelo; and four great-grandchildren, Katie Jernigan of Houston, Jordan McGinnis and Jacob McGinnis, both of San Antonio, and Elizabeth Smith of Dallas. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Lela Belle Scates ODESSA Lela Scates, 95, of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Avalon Nursing Center. She was born Feb. 18, 1905, in Alma, Ark. Lela came to Odessa 38 years ago from Keota, Okla. She was Baptist, and she worked 17 years for Deerings Nursing Home as a nurses aide. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Scates and his wife, Mary, of Odessa; son-in-law, Pat Rose of Stigler, Okla.; grandchildren, Mike Scates of Plano, Jan and Steve Brown of Odessa, Linda and Steve Thielen of Carmel, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Tyler Penn, Stephanie and Ashley Thielen and Matt and Emily Scates; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 16, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. He was born May 5, 1962, in Olney to Ruby Faye Dean and Franklin McArthur Thompson. He had been a resident of Olney in Young County before moving to Odessa. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Highland and Bunche Church of Christ with Brother Gene Collins officiating. Burial will be at Ector County Cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Martinez Funeral Home conducted by Brother Collins. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Martinez Funeral Home.
