August 27, 2001 "Coach" Ray Newton ODESSA - Raymond Newton, 81, of Odessa, a football coach and teacher at Odessa High for many years and DE Coordinator at Ector High School, died Saturday Aug. 25, 2001, after a brief battle with lung cancer. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Bugg officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home. He was born in Marshall. SURVIVORS: Wife, Jerry Newton of Odessa; daughter, Pat Winchell of Midland; sons, David M. Newton and Tad Newton, both of Odessa; brothers, O.E. "Red" Newton of Odessa, and Melvin Newton of Stephenville; and four granddaughters. Julia Powell ODESSA - Julia Bell Powell, 83, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at The Rose of Sharon Church with Supt. W.C. Kenan officiating. Interment will follow at the Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. She was born in Smithfield. Davis, Gladys Peterson and Jewel McMillan, all of Washington, D.C., Lillian Peterson of Smithfield, Mildred Calvert of Austin, and Earnestine Peterson of Mansfield; and 26 grandchildren. Judy Harrington "Deedo" Pugh ODESSA - Judy Pugh, 59, of Odessa, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at her home. Services will be at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Garden of Memories with Rev. Jimmie Swaim ODESSA - Jimmie Dale Swaim, 59, of Odessa, a chemist at Ameripol Synpol, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Pastor Jack Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Kermit Cemetery. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home. He grew up in Jal, N.M. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
