January 11, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Ella Mae Cooper ODESSA Ella Mae Mayes Cooper, 68, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at her home after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 11, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Thomason will be officiating. Burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born March 24, 1932, in Berclair. She came to Odessa in 1937, where she attended school. She worked as a seamstress in the dry cleaning industry. She married Bill Cooper in 1967 in Monterrey, Mexico. He preceded her in death in 1991. She and Bill moved to Fort Worth in 1967, where she worked for Glastron Boats as head seamstress. They retired to Odessa in 1988. Much of their time was spent traveling throughout the United States visiting family and friends. Ella was a great fan of country swing music. She was the biggest fan of her husband, who was a bandleader. Her time was spent crocheting afghans for family members, and during her recent stay at Medical Center Hospital she gave many crocheted gifts to her nurses. Ella will be missed by her loved ones and those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a wonderful loving mother who knew her children and friends loved her. She is with the angels now and our hearts are empty. We will see her again one day. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Johnson of Odessa; a son, Richard Medlin of Fallon, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Charolette Cooper Behrendt of Odessa and Cathy Cooper Foster of Burleson; a stepson, William Thomas Cooper Jr. of Ruidoso, N.M.; grandchildren, Gregg Behrendt of Austin, Brad Behrendt of Odessa, Rachel Behrendt of Midland, Josh Cooper of Dallas, Jacob Cooper of Ruidoso, Cynthia Foster of Denton, and Chad and David Foster of Burleson; great-granddaughters, Kali Behrendt of Odessa and Madeleine Behrendt of Austin; an aunt, Linda Dennis of Odessa; and nephews, Sam Dennis and wife Mary of Odessa and Kenny Williamson and wife Gail of Lindale. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Joseph Arthur Day ODESSA Joseph Arthur Day, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Fort Worth, Texas. Interment will be in Lonesome Dove Cemetery in Southlake, Texas. A memorial service at North Fort Worth Baptist Church is scheduled at 2 p.m. A memorial service will also be held at First Baptist Church, Odessa, Texas, at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 11, 2001. Mr. Day was born April 27, 1922, in Boston, Mass., to Harry E. and Katherine Day. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. While stationed at Pyote Bomber Base he met and married Bobbie Ruth Foster. He took great joy in his family, his church, and was a loyal friend to many. An ordained deacon, Mr. Day served in many capacities in his church, but may best be remembered as the candy-man, giving more than 1,000 pounds of candy, each piece with his special smile and word of encouragement as he visited hospitals, nursing homes, churches, and neighborhoods. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bobbie Day; son, Donald Day, Sr. and wife Vickie of Fort Worth, son, Dale Day and wife Eleanor of Corpus Christi; one grandson, Donald Day, Jr. and wife Julie and their son Charles of Dallas; two granddaughters, Amy Radtke and her daughter, Jordan, of Dallas, and Katherine Day of Corpus Christi. He is also survived by one sister, Lillian Milling of Randolph, Mass. and several dearly loved nieces and nephews. Memorial gifts may be made to North Fort Worth Baptist Church of Fort Worth or First Baptist Church, Odessa, if desired. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Allen Harris Jr. ODESSA Mr. Allen Harris Jr. was born July 2, 1915, to Mr. and Mrs. Allen Harris Sr. in Mount Pleasant. He later met Clarine Porque at an early age and they were united in marriage Oct. 30, 1937, in Mount Vernon. Mr. Harris was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church of Mount Vernon. He served as an ordained deacon at Olton Baptist Church of Olton and remained faithful to his church. He also gave his service of employment as a maintenance supervisor of Hereford Elementary and other school systems. Surviving are his daughters, Alice F. Mitchem of Albuquerque, N.M., Barbara M. Morgan of Clovis, N.M., Fletta N. Douglas of Odessa and Eunice M. Harris of Dallas; sons, Johnny R. Harris of Fort Worth, Travis W. Harris of Dallas, Benny E. Harris of Albuquerque, Jerry W. Harris of Newport, Tenn., Danny G. Harris of Corsicana, James E. Harris of Odessa and Marvin A. Harris of Fulton, Mo.; brothers, John A. Harris and A.J. Harris, both of Sulfur Springs, and Gloss Red Harris of South Bend, Ind.; sisters, Clarsees Harris and Ola Lamb, both of Phoenix, Era Boyd and Letha Wilson, both of Dallas; 38 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Tatum. Ross Jones ODESSA H. Ross Jones, 81, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at a local nursing home. He was born March 1, 1919, in Teague. He married Freddie Mae Power Dec. 24, 1942, in Big Spring. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He moved to Odessa in 1942. Mr. Hubbard was the first person he met when he came to Odessa, and they had a long and lasting friendship. Mr. Jones was a member of Belmont Baptist Church for 40 years where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was chairman of the deacons for one term. He was retired district manager for Teledyne Merla. He was a well loved husband and father. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ross and Clara Jones, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors are his wife, Freddie Mae Jones of Odessa; daughter, Nancy Sherian Jones of Odessa; brothers, James L. Jones of Pasadena; and sister, Mary Pryor of Teague. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
