Booker Sr., 76, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Weatherford. He had been a resident of Odessa since 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Parker Construction from 1952 to 1964, Mason Drilling Co. from 1965 to 1972 and the City of Odessa from 1972 to 1986. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles Bickle. Survivors are his son, Bobby Booker Jr. of Colorado City; daughter, Brenda Joyce Booker of Odessa; sister, Joyce (Dollie) Traywick of Odessa; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and ex-wife, Ann Brewer of Sweetwater. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Donaldson, 83, of Odessa died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Odessa. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Law of Chapel Hill Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born Nov. 26, 1917, in The Grove. He married Betty Hart on July 10, 1948, in Odessa. They had lived in Colorado for four years before moving to Kent where they lived for 38 years. They moved back to Odessa in February 1990. He was a rancher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hart Donaldson Sept. 17, 2000, and his parents, Guy Donaldson Sr. and Lula Doolittle Donaldson. He is survived by his daughter, Sue Ann Donaldson Yarbrough of San Leandro, Calif. Downing Sr., a well-known educator and longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. He was born April 20, 1918, to Don L. and Hallie Bible Downing in Valley Mills, Bosque County. He completed elementary school under the tutelage of his uncle, W.T. Downing, who was his principal. After completing the eighth grade, he transferred to Paul Quinn A.M.E. Academy in Waco to complete his high school education. He also completed his junior college work at Paul Quinn College in Waco. Having graduated from Paul Quinn College, he enrolled at Huston Tillotson College in Austin where he completed his bachelor of arts degree in history. He received his master of arts degree in administration and supervision from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. he did advanced graduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., and the University of Denver in Denver, Colo., in the E.D.D. program. Mr. Downing was drafted into the armed forces during World War II from his teaching position in Brady in 1942. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant in the 212 Military Police Unit, Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations, Hawaii, Saipan and Imo Jima. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon and two Overseas Service Bars. His experience as an educator is as follows: He was a teacher and coach at Brady Independent School District from 1938 to 1942, after which he was drafted and served a stint in the armed service. Upon completion of Army duty, he returned in 1947 to Brady as principal of Dunbar School. He remained in Brady until 1948, at which time he accepted a position in the Ector County Independent School District in September 1948 as elementary head teacher and assistant to Coach Virgil C. Hendley at Blackshear Junior-Senior High School. He was hired by Dr. Murry Fly, superintendent of ECISD schools. Mr. Downing was the last ECISD employee hired by Dr. Fly before his accepting a position at Odessa College. The two men maintained a relationship that lasted throughout Dr. Flys lifetime. He served in many capacities for ECISD: Principal of Douglas Elementary School, principal of Carver Elementary School and principal at Blackshear Junior-Senior High School. From 1968 until his retirement in 1985, he was director of special services, which included: Student accounting transportation, nursing service, textbooks and making reports for the district to the state agency. Having performed multiple duties for ECISD, he was always congratulated by the state auditing team from the state agency in Austin for his outstanding work. After 37 years of dedicated service with perfect service attendance, he retired from the district under Superintendent William Holm. His total years of service in public education were 42 years coupled with four years in the U.S. Army. Being interested in the community, he was instrumental in helping to make many projects become a reality, such as Woodson Park, Boys Club, Odessa Beautiful and the Downtown Rotary Club. He was organizer of the Iota Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in the Midland-Odessa area. He served as district president of the West Texas Teachers Association, board member of the executive board of Texas State Teachers Association, sponsor of adult basic education begun at Blackshear Junior High and later housed at Odessa College. Mr. Downing was the first African American in the history of the Ector County Court to be selected to serve as juror. As a public servant, he received many awards for outstanding recognition: 50-year Omega Man, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1996, Vocational Opportunities Award from Vocational Opportunities Club of Texas in 1989, ECTA Award in 1980, Blackshear Reunion Award in 1966, Dedicated Service Award in Education (Blackshear Reunion) in 1998, Educational Leadership Award by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in Dec. 10, 2000. A longtime Baptist, Mr. Downing united with the Greater St. John Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. L.H. Hall in 1948. For many years, he served as Sunday School superintendent. He also continued his involvement with his home church, Mt. Carmel in Valley Mills. He leaves to mourn his home-going his devoted wife of more than 49 years, Jewel, two sons, Edward K. Downing Jr. and John G. Downing of the home, many former students and co-workers, many relatives and many friends and citizens of the Odessa community, all of whom he loved. Public visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel followed by a time of visitation with the family until 8 p.m. Interment services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Cook-Walden/Capital Memorial Parks Mausoleum Chapel. He was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Irrma, Mo. He moved to Odessa in the 1930s from Tulsa, Okla. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. when he first came to Odessa. He then owned a service station before owning an automotive machine shop. He was of the Church of Christ faith. He married Peggy Dillard in November 1963 in Odessa. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Barbee; seven brothers; and a sister. Survivors are his wife, Peggy Jordan of Odessa; son, Mark Jordan of Odessa; daughter, Darla Auten of Odessa; four grandchildren, Hannah and Molly Jordan of Odessa, Diane Herrington of Bridgeport and Peggy Auten of Austin. She was born May 12, 1914, in San Antonio. She married Clyde C. Meek on Nov. 20, 1937. Mrs. Meek lived in San Antonio where she began working as a licensed vocational nurse at the State Tuberculosis Hospital where she worked until 1954, at which time she went into private nursing. She continued private nursing until her retirement in 1989. She moved to Odessa in October 1989 where she resided until her death. She was a member of Caprock Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Meek in 1983; a son, Billy Charles Lay; five brothers; two sisters; and parents, James and Minnie Burney. Survivors are her sons, Jimmy Clyde Meek of Belflower, Calif., and Bobby Ray Meek, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, of Yuma, Ariz.; daughters, Judy Foreman and Ruth Harper, both of Odessa; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, Joy Lee Rittaman of Blackwell, Okla., and June Drew of Fulton; and her loyal friend and companion, "Tator." Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Harper Peddicord II KERMIT Harper Peddicord II, M.D., 76, of Kermit went home Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001. He was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Fort Bragg, Calif., and grew up in Redwood City, Calif. He attended San Jose State College before joining the Navy and was sent to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for two years. He then attended Southwestern Medical College in Dallas and graduated in 1949. He completed his internship at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif. He practiced medicine in Versailles, Calif., until 1951 when he relocated to Kermit to practice with the McClure-Robinson Clinic. He subsequently designed and built his own clinic where he practiced medicine for 50 years. He was a physician at the West Texas State School in Pyote for more than 25 years. He was also an adjunct assistant professor with Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harper and Gertrude Gish Peddicord; brother, Wayne Peddicord; sister, Genevieve Duttweiler; beloved daughter, Diana Kerr; and his best friend, Mr. B (Bandit). He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Maxine Peddicord; his five daughters, Ruth Briscoe and husband Terry of Lubbock, Benita Bradford and husband Kenneth of Arlington, Danita Perez and husband Rene of Kermit, Kimberly Arnold and husband Bobby of Kermit and Susan Talbott Cooper and husband Charlie of Midland; sister, Mary Thompson of Ocean City, Calif.; nephew, Freddy Duttweiler and wife Carol of Del Mar, Calif.; niece, Sandra Duttweiler and husband Gary of Ocean City; son-in-law, Benny Kerr of Odessa; and grandchildren, Kyla and Shay Kerr of Odessa, Mandy and Mallary Arnold of Kermit, Cody Perez of Kermit and Stephanie Talbott of Midland. He was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Eastland County. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating and assisted by Rick Stovall. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Stovall served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Command. He moved to Odessa in 1951. He served in the Odessa Police Department for two years, was an auto mechanic for many years and was employed by the Ector County Independent School District for 10 years. He was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Stephensville. He had been a resident of Albuquerque, N.M., and had been a resident of Midland for three months. He worked for 33 years with Sandia National Labs as a security guard. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Albuquerque and then transferred to Abilene. He enjoyed walking and working on his yard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwelda Toler on June 17, 1991. He is survived by his son, Ron Burnett Sr. and wife Gayle of Odessa; sister, Arvezena Heron of Paris, Texas; grandchildren, Ron Burnett Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Greg Burnett of Odessa and Ronda Manning of Monahans; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
