January 31, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Lila Tipton Meador MATADOR Lila Tipton Meador passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at age 92 at Camp Wood Convalescence Center in Camp Wood, where she had been for a year. She was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Colt, Ark., to Andrew and Aletha Crowell Tipton. She moved to Matador in 1928 after graduating from high school in Caruthersville, Mo. Her parents were already in Motley County, having moved there in 1927. She met Douglas Meador in Matador, and they married June 22, 1929, in Paducah. She and her husband were editors and publishers of the Matador Tribune for over 40 years, from 1933 until his death in 1974. She published the paper three more years before selling the business. During the span of 40 years, the newspaper won numerous journalistic awards at regional and state press conventions. Mrs. Meador had her own column, "Pied Pinions," between 1940 and 1960. Mr. Meadors column, "Trail Dust," was a regular feature in the paper, having won for the first time Best Column in Texas at the State Fair in 1934. His book, "Trail Dust," was later published. The Meadors always hired young people, usually high school students, who went on to pursue journalistic careers. One young lady is Karen Elliott House, who is a Pulitzer Prize winner. Lilas home was Matador for 71 years and for 70 years she was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Matador, where she played the piano and later the organ. She also taught Sunday school class. After suffering a stroke in 1994, Mrs. Meador moved to Odessa to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Crider. In December of 1999, she entered a nursing home at Camp Wood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Meador; her father, Andrew A. Tipton; her mother, Aletha Crowell Tipton; a brother, Burrell A. Tipton; and a half-sister, Virginia Hickson. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Crider of Odessa and Opal Fulkerson of Lubbock; a cousin, J.W. Tipton of Matador; her nieces, Donna Kirkland of Odessa, Dale Nance of Barksdale, Nola Hasty of Robert Lee, Susan Hackey of Sugar Land and Paula Hepting of Harvey, La.; her nephews, David Crider of Roswell, N.M., Gerald Fulkerson of Lubbock and Tony Juno of Indiana; and also several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Matador Baptist Church in Matador. Interment will be at East Mound Cemetery in Matador under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Family has suggested memorials to the East Mound Cemetery Association at Matador or to your favorite charity. _________________________________________________________________ John W. Johnny Brake Sr. ODESSA John Wesley Brake Sr., 74, of Odessa died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Meridian to Arthur and Mary Brake. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 31, 2001, at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Owen Sharp officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Brake served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He moved to Odessa in 1947 and owned J&J Oilfield Repair. He was a member of the American Legion and West Texas Singles Association. He was also a hospice volunteer for 10 years. John was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Brake; and sisters, Nora Bible, Pearl Brown, Margaret Beverly and Mabel Sullivan. He is survived by his sons, John W. Brake Jr. and wife Jennifer of Odessa, Leslie Marvin Brake of Willow, Alaska, and Gary Hodge and wife Lynda of Plano; daughter, Candace Hope Brake of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandson, Mark Wilson Brake of Odessa; and several nieces and nephews. "Lefty" Cooper, 77, of Kermit passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born May 2, 1923, in Delaware County, Okla. Lefty married Wanda Lipham on June 3, 1948, in Kermit. He and Wanda were founders and operators of Cooper Funeral Chapel Inc. from 1962 until 1997. Lefty held every office and position in the West Texas Funeral Directors Association, including president, during his career. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kermit, member of the Kermit Downtown Lions Club, Kermit Masonic Lodge No. 1258, the El Paso Consistory and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Hollenback. He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Wanda Cooper of Kermit; his two precious children, Jay Cooper of Kermit and Doylene Plummer and her husband Jerry of Amarillo; grandson, Doyle Plummer and his wife Lorri of Grand Prairie; granddaughter, Crystal Plummer of Amarillo; great-granddaughter, Hope Plummer of Amarillo; and great-grandson, Colton Plummer of Grand Prairie. He is also survived by his two sisters, Juanita Larmon of Jay, Okla., and Reva Lois Votaw of Oak Grove, Mo. She was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Sulphur Springs. Josephine was a native Texan living her younger years in West Texas before moving to Louisiana where she was a housewife, mother, gardener, seamstress and an active member of the First Baptist Church for many years. Moving back to West Texas, she was a devoted employee of Furrs Cafeteria on Grandview for more than 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, whom she will now rejoice in seeing again. She is survived by her son, Billy Miles of Odessa; daughter, JoAnn McBride of Odessa; six grandchildren, Terry, Tina, Dina, Jimmy, Mary Ann and Jessica; 10 great-grandchildren; two very loved people, Mary and Lisa; six brothers and sisters, Joyce Hoadley of Olla, La., Laverne Womack of Odessa, Doll Shuffield of Odessa, Travis Roberson of Seagraves, James Roberson of Hobbs, N.M., and Calvin Roberson of Seagraves; and stepmother, Cora Roberson of Seagraves. He was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Cuchillo Parado, Chihuahua, Mexico, and moved in the early 1940s from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Odessa. Mr. Larez united in marriage to his beloved wife Cosme Navarette on July 18, 1941, in Cuchillo Parado. To this unification were the blessings of six sons and a daughter and Gods granting 60 years of marriage. He was a retired carpenter. He was of Christian faith. He was preceded in death by his sons, Blas Larez Jr., Conrad Larez and Santos Larez; his parents, Florencio and Cruz Larez; his brothers, Candelario Larez and Nicacio Larez; and sisters, Salome Larez and Magdalena Larez. He is survived by his wife, Cosme Larez of Odessa; sons, Lupe Larez of Midland, Asunchion "Chon" Larez of Lubbock, Frank "Keeko" Larez of San Angelo, Raul Larez of Albuquerque, N.M., Martin Larez of Odessa and Federico Larez Corrales of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico; daughter, Rosa Larez of Odessa; sister, Jesus L. Navarette of Ciudad Juarez; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with Hno. Services by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. _________________________________________________________________ Jody Tarter MIDLAND Jody Paul Tarter was born July 24, 1978, in Midland to Chuck Tarter and Gayle Massey Tarter. He graduated from Midland High School in 1996 and then attended Midland College. He was employed at Logans Restaurant. Jody was a member of Crestview Baptist Church and had been active in the youth department. He enjoyed fishing, camping, his family and his many friends. He died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at a local hospital following an automobile accident. Jody was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Tarter and his grandfather, Les Massey. He is survived by his parents, Gayle and Ron Jenkins and Becky Tarter; brothers, Jeremy and Zack Tarter; his grandparents, Donna Massey, Bob and Ann Jenkins and Sophie Nelson; his aunts and uncles, Paula and Dave Crawford, Brenda and Jimmy Smith, Molly and Tommy Cooley and Denny and Jayle Jenkins; his great-grandmother, Margie Sims; numerous cousins; and his special friend, Kandi Williams. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 31, 2001, at Fairview Cemetery with Dr. Larry Ashlock officiating. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. at Crestview Baptist Church. Ellis Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A reception will be held at Crestview Baptist Church following the memorial service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jason Parks, Jon Nelson, Erik Anderson, Ryan Worland, Sammy Gerardo and Casey Billingsley and cousins, Travis Crawford, Garrett Crawford and Josh Cooley.
