Burton are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Stanton Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pipkin Funeral Home and Chapel. John was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Hand County, S.D., to Almina Marthina Evenson and Arthur Edward Burton. John entered the Army in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps as a sergeant. He was stationed in San Antonio and Midland. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. John married Wanda Fay Wilson Oct. 2, 1943, in Midland. John and Wanda made Midland their home. They shared 57 years together. John worked for LeSage Beer and Lone Star Liquors for 20 years until his retirement. He also worked for the Midland Independent School District and Region 18 until his second retirement. He loved his family, boating, fishing and camping out. He also loved fixing things and sitting on the front porch. He was a wonderful father who was adored by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members. Dad, or Papa John, was mischievous and had a great sense of humor. He gave us values and a positive outlook on life that has helped us to become better parents and better citizens. Hopefully, we will be able to pass these attributes on to our children. We will miss him very much. John died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at a local hospital. John was preceded in death by his three daughters, Shirley Burton, Sharley Burton and Charlotte Vasbinder; his grandson, David Keith Vasbinder; his granddaughter, Dodie Joe Burton; his parents; seven sisters; and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Fay Burton of Midland; his sons, Robert Burton and wife Jane of Midland and Randal Burton of Odessa; his three daughters, Marylin Morris and husband Jim of Odessa, Karen Gipson and husband Danny, also of Odessa, and DAnne Henson and husband Randy of Midland; his grandsons, James Huggins Jr., Tony Lesley and wife Wendi, Larry Don Burton, Tracy Joe Henson, Benjamin Burton, Nicholas Burton, Chris McCall and Jeff Morris, all of Midland, Brandon Huggins and wife Sheri of Stanton and Cody Burton of Odessa; his granddaughters, Kedron Dean of Goldthwaite, Tammie Jo Hanson and husband Scott, Audra Brown and husband Jimmy, and Brooke Henson, all of Midland; his great-grandsons, Michael Gillis and Cody Dean, both of Goldthwaite, Christopher Linville of Elgin, Ore., John Eric Faught, Michael Lesley, Johnny Lesley, Braden Brown and Jimmy Brown, all of Midland, Kody Huggins and Spencer Huggins, both of Stanton; his great-granddaughters, Amanda Joy Dean of Goldthwaite, Elizabeth Hanson, Emily Marie Hanson and Crystalin Lesley, all of Midland; his sister, Mrs. Royal Bitner of Rapid City, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Cordelia Barner POST Cordelia Barner, 98, of Post, a homemaker, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, March 22, 2001, at her residence. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Hudman Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Cooper officiating. Burial was at Terrace Cemetery. Arrangements by Hudman Funeral Home. She was born April 29, 1902, in Hamilton County. She married James Gilder Barner in 1920 in Hamilton. Her husband died in 1941. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Post and longtime member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Odessa. Many will remember her for the loving care she gave to their children while working in the Sherwood Baptist Nursery. Cordelia will be remembered for her warm smiles and open arms for hugs. She was also preceded in death by a son and two daughters. Survivors include her sons, David, Roy and Harold, all of Odessa, James and Everett, both of Post, and Pete of Canyon; daughters, Jackie Voglino and Jessie Wickliffe, both of Odessa; sisters, Norra Massingill of Hamilton and Nannie Alexander of Colorado; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Post. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Honorato Buddy Carrion ODESSA Honorato Buddy Carrion, 53, of Odessa died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Avalon Place in Odessa. He was born Dec. 29, 1947, in Quezon City, Philippines, to Antonio and Beatriz Carrion. His parents preceded him in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2001, at St. Marys Catholic Church with Father Frey and Father Getigan officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. tonight at Sunset Memorial Chapel. Buddy came to Odessa in 1975 from Little Rock, Ark. He was a registered nurse who greatly enjoyed his work. He enjoyed playing the guitar and piano, and he loved music. She was born Feb. 18, 1933, in San Angelo to Lonnie and Alice Thompson. She attended college at Texas Tech where she met Boyd Hughes, and they were married May 16, 1952, in Odessa. Sallie was preceded in death by her father, Lonnie L. Thompson Sr. and brother, Lonnie L. Thompson Jr. Sallie worked for Bethlehem Supply, Republic Supply and CEMA. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, great-grandchild and a multitude of friends. Survivors are her husband, Boyd Hughes; sons, Bryan Hughes and Jeff Hughes; three grandchildren, Cody Hughes, Jennifer Hughes and Bradley Hughes, all of Odessa; a great-grandchild, Hunter Bryan Hughes; mother, Alice Thompson; sister, Linda Duncan and husband Tom Duncan; and many nieces and nephews. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Billy Ray Bell ODESSA Billy Ray Bell, 64, of Odessa passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 21, 1937, in Santa Anna to Bill Bell and Myrtle Stegall Bell. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Eisenhower Church of Christ with Mr. Mike Vestal officiating and Mr. Burt Groves assisting. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Bell was raised in Odessa and moved to Temple. He returned to Odessa in 1974. He married Loretta Jean Hodges Nov. 16, 1962, in Odessa. Mr. Bell retired from the Army in 1969. He was a masonry teacher at Ector High School for 17 years. He was a building contractor. He was an active member of the Eisenhower Church of Christ, a member of the Texas Teachers Association and the Texas Home Builders Association. The family will receive family and friends between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. His father, Bill Bell, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Jean Bell; son, Randy Ray Bell and his wife Connie of Odessa; son, David Howard Bell of Odessa; his daughter, Lynn Pendergrass and her husband Benny of McKinney; his mother, Myrtle Bell of Odessa; brothers, LeeRoy Bell of Odessa and Don Bell of Bethany, Okla.; sisters, Lula Duncan and JoAnne Pitman of Odessa; and four grandchildren, Aaron and Kelby Bell of Odessa and Ryan and Loren Pendergrass of McKinney. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Sadie Iona Stucks FORT WORTH Sadie Stucks, 79, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went home to be with our Lord Friday, March 23, 2001, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer at All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be at noon Monday, March 26, 2001, at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Laurel Land of Burleson Funeral Home. Sadie was born Aug. 22, 1921, in Bradley, Okla., to Charles and Mae Hammon. She married her childhood sweetheart, Marvin A. Stucks, Nov. 22, 1941, in Anadarks, Okla. They moved to Odessa in 1950 where they lived for 49 years. She was a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Odessa for 25 years and was a member of the Naomi Sunday School Class. At the time she and her husband moved to Burleson in December 1998 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Survivors: husband, Marvin A. Stucks; sons, M.C. Skip Stucks and his wife Cendyof Edmond, Okla., and Mark Stucks and his wife Nelda of Burleson; daughter, Debbie Wilson and her husband John of Arlington; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ [INLINE] Minnie Eva Steen ODESSA Minnie Eva Steen, 95, of Odessa passed away Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Odessa after a lengthy illness. She was born May 25, 1905, in Eustace to Copeland and Cora Campbell. She married Homer T. Steen Jan. 30, 1930, in Hollis, Okla. He preceded her in death July 13, 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of Terrace Hills Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Willie May Freeman, two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, a brother and five sisters. She is survived by sons, Bobby Steen of De Leon and Homer W. Steen of Monahans; daughters, Jean Boyd and husband Herman of McKinney, Norma Rankin and husband Leroy and Cora Ross and husband Jimmie, all of Odessa; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2001, at Terrace Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Willis officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Hope Hazlewood STANTON Hope Hazlewood, 94, of Stanton died Friday, March 23, 2001, at a Midland nursing home. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today, March 25, 2001, at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. Memorial services will follow at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Stanton with the Rev. David Harp, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. She was born July 16, 1906, in Kent County and married L.C. Hazlewood Sr. June 8, 1929, in Portales, N.M. He preceded her in death April 9, 1986. She was a member of a pioneer Lea County, N.M., family and had lived in the Courtney Community in Martin County until moving to Stanton. She was honored as a Texas Older Citizen in Stanton. Mrs. Hazlewood was a member of First United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Friendship Sunday School Class for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Stanton Study Club and was the founding secretary director of WesTex Telephone. Survivors include a son, Cliff Hazlewood Jr. and wife Nelda; a daughter, Elaine Eiland and husband Paige, all of Stanton; seven grandchildren, Cathy Herzog of Odessa, Debbie Louder of San Angelo, Tere Garlington of Stanton, Gordon Eiland of Whitehouse, Amy Barley of Celina, Paiga Lou Marsh of Sterling City and Craig Eiland of Galveston; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Lasley of Hobbs, N.M. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Malcolm Wayne Hazlewood and Danny Hazlewood.
