April 11, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Lois Nell Teplicek-Gardner ALPINE Lois Nell Teplicek-Gardner passed away April 6, 2001, at Big Bend Regional Hospital following an illness. She was born July 13, 1916, in Fort Madison, Iowa. She was the third of five daughters born to Mack Bartley and Iva Deets Titsworth. She moved to Texas with her family at an early age. At age 15, she was salutatorian of her McCamey High School graduating class. She attended college in Lubbock and San Angelo with her older sister, Maxine. Maxine and Nell had a job singing on the radio while in San Angelo. She married Ludvik A. "Ludy" Teplicek in 1933. In the early 1940s, Nell, Ludy and their young daughter, Carol, moved to Alpine where they owned and operated a grocery store. A son, David Ludvik, was born in 1945. In 1950, Ludy passed away. Following his death, Nell continued her education at Sul Ross in Alpine. She taught school for a time in the 1950s and 1960s in Sierra Blanca and Del Rio. She was the assistant administrator of the Alpine hospital in the 1960s. She moved to Del Rio in 1963 where she was administrator of Del Rio Nursing Home for many years. While in Del Rio, she was proclaimed "Citizen of the Year" for her tireless service to the elderly and others in the community. She retired in 1995. Upon her retirement, the Del Rio mayor proclaimed "Nell Gardner Day" in her honor. She moved to Alpine after her retirement where she built a home near her daughters home in Sunny Glenn. She loved her "beautiful little house," and she loved the countryside around Alpine. Nell is survived by her daughter, Carol Lewis and Billy Mitchell of Alpine; son, David Teplicek and wife Linda of San Antonio; and by her sisters, Maxine Wolcott of Albuquerque, N.M., and Gene Kidd of Denver City, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nancy Nell Donaldson and husband Larry of Fort Davis, Scott Lewis of Odessa, Jeanne Novosad and husband Neal of Alpine and Susan Nell Teplicek of San Antonio; and her great-grandchildren, Betsy Donaldson of Iredell, Cory Donaldson of Corpus Christi, Logan Lewis of Odessa, Alex Almada and Erika Novosad of Alpine and Laura and Anthony Mena and Isaiah Arredondo of San Antonio. In addition, many nephews, nieces and great-nephews and nieces survive her. Her parents and two sisters, Mary Bennett and Janice Nye, preceded her in death. Nells name means "light," and she was truly a shining light in so many lives. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends who loved her. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 2000, 2001 Odessa American.
