April 20, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Ruby Johnson Cunningham PECOS Ruby Johnson Cunningham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Odessa. She was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Addis, La., to Bennie and Millie Gorum Cleveland. Bennie Cleveland worked for the T&P Railroad, and they lived one mile from the Mississippi River. In 1927, they fled their home to escape the raging river, threatening to break the levees. The family and all their belongings rode the train west to Toyah, where they settled permanently in September 1928. Ruby lived in Toyah until 1997, when she moved to Midland to be near her son. She was a homemaker, bookkeeper and also worked for the school in Toyah. She loved to travel with her family. She was a devout Christian and a friend to all. She was known as Granny Ruby to many children and later to their children. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Oley Cleveland, Buford G. Cleveland and Bennie Cleveland; and a sister, Louise Puryear. Also preceding her is her husband, Garland Johnson, who died in 1960, and her second husband, B.A. "Ab" Cunningham, who died in 1984. She is survived by her son, B.G. Johnson and wife Lynda of Midland; her brother, James H. Cleveland and wife Joyce of Odessa; her sister, Lois Boulter of Branson, Mo.; her sister, Lillie Mae Lukins and husband Floyd of Sweetwater; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with J.R. Wooten officiating. Interment will be at Mount Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. Arrangements are under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Zachary Franco ODESSA Zachary Franco, age 11, of Odessa went to be with God on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at a Dallas hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1989, in Odessa. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Mark Riley and Brian Swiggart of Immanuel Baptist Church and Rosario Hill of Buenas Nuevas Church officiating. Zachary Franco and his family have been active members of Immanuel Baptist Church of Odessa. He was involved in the Kids-4-Life Childrens Ministry at Immanuel, where he participated in many things like childrens choir, Bible drill, child precept Bible study and other activities. He had a heart for helping others and at the church served as a volunteer in the Special Needs Sunday School Class, which is for children with special needs. Zachary was a fifth-grade student at Gonzales Elementary where he was on the A/B honor roll and participated in the drama club. He was a strong Christian at school and prayed for others and was extremely well liked by all students. He was a leader in a positive way on his school campus and volunteered in the special needs class there at Gonzales. He also held a first-degree black belt in tae kwon do. Zachary was a very happy, caring and a loving young boy who had a great heart and loved to help and serve everyone. He loved his family and friends, especially his parents, Toby and Frances, and his brothers, Joshua and Tomas. Most of all, Zachary loved God and his personal Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave him the wonderful eternal life he is now enjoying in heaven. While Zachary will be greatly missed, but his parents, family and friends know that because he had Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior, he is in a much better place. They pray that others will know and find the peace that they and Zachary have. Zachary is survived by his parents, Toby and Frances Franco; brothers, Joshua T. Franco and Tomas A. Franco; grandparents, Florentino and Esperanza Franco and Hipolito and Esperanza Hernandez; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ Raymond Pete Goodman AUSTIN Raymond "Pete" Goodman, age 55, of Austin died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. He was born in Pecos July 24, 1945. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelors degree in architecture and a masters degree in environmental planning. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He had served in the Peace Corps for four years. He was preceded in death by his father, Col. Raymond Elmer Goodman. Survivors include his mother, Peggy Goodman of Austin; his sister, Judy C. Neill and nephew, Jamie F. Neill, both of Vancouver, British Columbia; and various aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with Dr. Helen P. Almanza officiating. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
