June 16, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Opal Eileen Melton ODESSA On Thursday, June 14, 2001, Eileen Melton went home to be with her Lord. She was born July 17, 1920, in Healdton, Okla., to Vernon and Ella Brandon. She married George Melton Sept. 21, 1940, and was proud to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this past year. Eileen and George put down roots in Odessa in 1960. She was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word and a very talented seamstress who created beautiful works with her hands. She was a self-taught painter and crafter who loved to share her gift with others. Eileen was a charter member of Central Baptist Church where she served in many capacities through the years. She loved her church and the many friends she worshipped together with. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, beloved stepmother and brother. Eileen is survived by her loving husband, George; daughter, Beverly Ford and son Donnie Melton, both of Odessa; her brother, Jess Brandon of Moore, Okla.; and sister, Nita Lindley of Mexia. Three grandchildren, Scarlet Melton, Brandon and Stacy Ford also survive her. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, June 16, 2001, at Central Baptist Church, 1401 N. Texas Ave., with the Rev. David Johnson and Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. If desired, memorials can be made to the Television Ministry at First Baptist Church. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Robert Ancel Palmer Sr. ODESSA Robert Ancel Palmer Sr. died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the age of 91 years, four months and 25 days while at Medical Center Hospital. Ancel was born Jan. 19, 1910, in Center to Matthew Silvanus and Anita Alice Turner Palmer. His early years were spent in East Texas. Then the family moved to Robstown and then to Brownsville in the lower Rio Grande Valley. After completing his schooling, Ancel worked various jobs before beginning a long love of aviation. Ancel joined American Airlines in 1930 where he remained until 1949. At this time, Ancel became airport manager in Harlingen until 1965 when he moved to Odessa. Ancel held a private pilots license and made his first parachute jump at the age of 87. This jump set a new state and regional record for the oldest jumper ever. He was also a longtime member of the Civil Air Patrol and active as a QB. During the above times, Ancel married Mary Dorothy McCarty of Brownsville, and they had a son, Robert Ancel Palmer Jr. He married Alice C. Hartman in 1945, and they celebrated over 54 years of marriage until her death in Odessa in October 2000. Daddy Ancel, as he was affectionately called by the family, is survived by his son, Robert Ancel Palmer Jr. and his wife Bee Bee of Dallas and by Barbara J.H. Johnson, his daughter, of Odessa. He is further survived by a sister, Dorothy Crowe and her husband, Dick and two grandsons, Robert Ancel Palmer III and his wife Melody of Dallas and G.L. J Johnson III and wife Stephanie of Oak Point. There are five granddaughters, Patricia Palmer Barnard and her husband John of Amelia Island, Fla., Janus Palmer Alberts and husband John of Austin, Julie Palmer of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sudie Johnson Rogers and husband Mark of San Antonio and Jodie Johnson Rios and her husband Larry of Krum. There are five great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters and eight nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. today, June 16, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev.
