June 19, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Marjorie Rogers Morris ODESSA Marjorie Rogers Morris, 93, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, at a local hospital. Mrs. Morris was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Pilot Point. She had been a longtime resident of Odessa. She was a founder of the Globe of the Great Southwest Theatre and also founded the Anne Hathaway (Cottage) Library, part of the Globe complex. The Globe Theatre, in conjunction with the National Shakespeare Company of New York, bestowed upon her the title of Lady Morris on April 21, 1990, for all the service and devotion she had contributed to the Globe Theatre. The Odessa Cultural Council awarded her its Founders Award, and she was honored as the Lady of Odessa while she was teaching at Odessa College. She was a life member of the Globe Theatre Board of Governors, the Heritage of Odessa Foundation, the Fine Arts Society of Texas and the Poetry Society of Texas. She founded the local Chapter of the Poetry Society of Texas, which has grown to become the Permian Basin Chapter of the Poetry Society of Texas. She is a charter and life member of Delta Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and was the recipient of a state marker from the Outstanding Women of Texas Services. Mrs. Morris had been a teacher for the Ector County Independent School District and taught at Odessa High School for several years before moving to Odessa College. As a former professor at Odessa College, she received the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award in 1953 and was the State Piper Professor winner in 1955. She was a member of the Bible class of First Baptist Church, taught Sunday school class for over 31 years and was a former member of the choir. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, June 19, 2001, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Globe of the Great Southwest Theatre. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Ernesto Joe Salas ODESSA Ernesto Joe Salas, 40, of Odessa died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in Odessa. He was born Oct. 17, 1960, in Odessa and was a lifelong resident. He was a welder for Permian Tank. He was Catholic. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. He was preceded in death by his father, Evodio Salas. He is survived by his mother, Maria Freeman of Odessa; sister, Gracie Dominguez and husband Mario of Odessa; brothers, Nathaniel Freeman and wife Geneva and Edward Gomez, both of Odessa; grandmother, Francisca Mireles of Odessa; nieces, Kristy Dominguez and Brinna Dominguez, both of Odessa; and nephew, Derek Dominguez of Odessa. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Annie Mack Farris ODESSA Annie Mack Farris, 78 years of age, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born April 25, 1923, in Lee County to Aubrey and Cordilia Mack. She married Theo Farris on Sept. 28, 1940, in Burnet. She was a Daughter of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by husband, Theo Farris; two sons, Nathan and David Farris; and parents, Aubrey and Cordilia Mack. Surviving are her three sons, Maurice Farris of Odessa, Tim Farris and his wife Shirley of Tyler and Stephen Farris of Odessa; a daughter, Janice Goss of Tyler; two brothers, Randolph and Norman Mack of Houston; four sisters, Georgia Barry of Odessa, Annie Williams, Jeannie Talbert and Joyce Mack, all of Houston; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at First United Pentecostal Church with Pastor Terry Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
