July 08, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Maxine Ellen Halbrook ODESSA Maxine Ellen Halbrook, 70, of Odessa passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001, at a local hospital. Maxie Halbrook was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Wichita, Kan., to Everett I. and Martha M. Halbrook. Her parents preceded her in death. Maxie moved to Odessa in 1959 from Albuquerque, N.M. She was never married, but was engaged. Her fiance died of cancer before they could be married. Her 30-year association with the Basin and Suburban Groups brought her much joy and satisfaction. She worked for several certified public accounting firms for many years. Most recently, she worked for the office of Cathy Michalka Figert, CPA, where she had a happy association with her fellow workers. Maxie is survived by a sister, Lorene Leslie of Odessa; a niece, Martha Buckwalter and her husband Gary of Austin; a nephew, Kirk Leslie and his wife Lynda of Odessa; a great-nephew, Tony McDow and his wife Sushila of Austin; a great-niece, Leigh Ann Leslie of Odessa; a great-niece, Brenna Brock and her husband Matt Baab of Austin; and a great-nephew, Devin Brock of Savannah, Ga. Public visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today with the family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Maxie preferred memorials, in lieu of flowers, to be made to the charity of your choice, especially those aimed at helping children. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Irma (Pope) Manville ODESSA Irma (Pope) Manville passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital with her family around her. She was born in Alba, Texas. Irma loved her family dearly. She was the mother of three, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of five. She left them with a beautiful poem by Helen Lowerie Marshall. An excerpt reads: Id like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, of happy memories I leave behind when day is done. Irma was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Manville of San Angelo, her parents and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by son, David D. Cassles and wife Cindy of Austin; daughters, Becky Martin and husband Ralph of Odessa, and Amy Clemmons and husband Andy of Victoria. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Brian Martin, Aaron Martin, Carter Clemmons and Lee Hernandez. Honorary Pallbearers are her granddaughters Leah Hernandez, Amy Martin, Amber Clemmons, Hannah Clemmons, Melanie Clemmons and great grandchildren Megan Casseles, McKenzie Martin, Autumn Martin, Trey Hernandez and one in the making. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2001, at the St. Paul Presbyterian Church in San Angelo, where she was a member until she moved to Odessa in 1994. Family visitation will be at Johnsons Funeral Home from 3 to 5 p.m. today. Local arrangements by Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Marvin McKinley Fisher ANDREWS Funeral services for Marvin McKinley Fisher, 74, of Andrews, will be 4 p.m today at the First Baptist Church in Andrews with Dr. H.A. Hanks, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews. Marvin passed away on Friday, July 6, 2001, at St. Lukes Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness. Marvin McKinley Fisher, Jr. was born to Nola Grigg Fisher and Marvin McKinley Fisher, Sr. in Midland, Texas, on Oct. 9, 1926. He was raised on the F Fisher Ranch in Andrews County and graduated from Andrews High School in 1944, where he was an area track and football star. He married Earlene Jeffreys on June 13, 1947, in Lubbock, Texas. They have two children, Marvin Dan Fisher, who is married to Pam Fisher, and Nola Jan Fisher Greaves, who is married to Randy Greaves of Knoxville, Tenn. After the death of his father in 1944, Marvin oversaw the Hereford cattle operation of the F Ranch. He rodeoed professionally across the United States in the late 40s and 50s as a calf roper. He excelled in the arena and became one of the top-ranked ropers of his day. Marvin was always willing to lend a helping hand to local boys who wanted to learn to rope. He was often seen coaching the likes of Chock Carruth, Ronnie Huckabee and Gip Lovejoy in the finer aspects of the sport. His son, Dan, and grandsons continue in the family tradition of ranching and roping. His daughter, Jan, was also coached by her father into a winning barrel racer in the junior rodeo circuit. She became and attorney and judge in Ector County. In addition to roping, Marvin raised and trained quarter horses for rodeo contestants and breeding purposes which he sold across the Southwest. Marvin served for 15 years on the Andrews County Permian General Hospital Board during some of most expansive years of the hospital. As a county rancher he served on the Andrews Soil Conservation Service Board for many years. He helped build the Andrews County Rodeo Arena and helped with local 4-H Clubs. Most recently, he was honored with a plaque placed in the Heritage Foundations tribute to West Texas ranches. The bronze plaque is located in the Ranching Heritage Memorial in Pioneer Plaza in Odessa. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Andrews and supported Cowboy Ministries on many occasions. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Ashley Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Earlene, his children, Dan Fisher of Andrews and Jan Greaves of Knoxville, Tenn., and seven grandchildren, McKinley, Vin and J. Tom Fisher of Andrews, and Travis, Amber, Jackson and Shelby Greaves of Knoxville, Tenn. Pallbearers include Sonny Tom, Gordon Cox, Gene Irwin, Ira Lee Brannan, Chock Carruth, Sonny Silva, Gip Lovejoy and Ronnie Huckabee. Honorary pallbearers include David Pace, Tuffy Cooper, Jimmy Cooper, Jackie Gillispie, Jim Smith, Billy Cox and Ted Kerr. Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church, 201 NE Second St., Andrews, Texas 79714-6511. _________________________________________________________________ Karl Ernest Menge ODESSA Karl Ernest Menge, 79, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2001, in Odessa. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, July 8, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Ray Brown officiating. Karl was born April 11, 1922, in Hamburg, Germany, to Wilhelm and Frieda Menge. He came to the United States at 19 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He came to Odessa in 1972 from Arizona and married Marian Lucas in Odessa in 1982. Karl enjoyed riding in his motorcycle club, building knives, and was a member of the Permian Basin Muzzleloading Rifle Club. Survivors include his wife, Marian Dickerson of Odessa; sons, Michael Smith of Middleton, Wis., Hans Menge of Washington, D.C., and Lamar Menge of Georgia; step-sons, Dickie and Bobby Dickerson, both of Odessa, and Brian Peanut Ventrone of Elmendorf, Ark.; step-daughters, Rose McMasters of Odessa, and Priscilla McCarty of Carlsbad, N.M.
