July 21, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Ernest M. Schur ODESSA Ernest M. Schur, 82, of Odessa passed away Thursday, July 19, 2001, in a local hospital. Mr. Schur was born August 25, 1918, in Vernon, Texas, to Ernest B. and Minnie Kieschnick Schur. They preceded him in death. Mr. Schur graduated from Vernon High School in 1935, West Texas State University with a BBA in 1940 and the Harvard University Finance and Supply School in 1942. Mr. Schur married Maurine Hoyle on June 7, 1942 in Plainview. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Electra. Mr. Schur had held many positions in several banks through the years. He served as the Vice-President of First National Bank of Chillicothe, Texas from 1940 to 1948; served as Vice-President, Executive Vice-President, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer for the First National Bank of Odessa from 1948 until his retirement in 1978; Chairman of the Board, First National Bank of Big Spring from 1961 to 1970; was the organizing Director for the National Bank of Odessa in 1959 and served on the Board until 1973 and as Chairman from 1970 to 1973 and served as a Director on the Federal Reserve Board. Mr. Schur served his community in many ways through the years by serving on various boards and committees. He served as President, Chairman of the Board and Member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, 1959 to 60; Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang; Odessa Community Chest and United Way Fund, 1958-59; Odessa Country Club, 1952; Salvation Army Advisory Board; Odessa Industrial Development Council; Odessa YMCA; West Texas Boys Ranch; Board of Regents of North Texas State University, Denton; Odessa Rehabilitation Center; Permian Basin Petroleum Museum; Presidential Museum; Permian Basin Oil Show, Executive Committee; University of Texas of the Permian Basin Development Board. He was listed in the Community Leaders of America, 1969; Worlds Whos Who in Commerce and Industry, 1968; Men of Achievement, 1973; Distinguished Service Award, 1951. He is survived by his wife, Maurine Schur of Odessa; one son, Gary W. Schur of Austin; one brother, Leonard Schur of Ft. Worth; two sisters, Emily Graf of Vernon and Katherine Schoppa of Plainview. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today, July 21, 2001, at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Dean Kelm officiating.
