August 05, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Melva Anthony Odessa Melva Anthony, age 67, of Odessa, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Odessa. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Melva Jean Anthony was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Seminole to Walter and Queenie Bruce. She and her family came to Odessa in 1971 when her husband, James, retired from the Air Force. Melva was employed with the school district for 13 years, retiring in 1984. She had worked most of her time at Blackshear Elementary in the cafeteria. She loved to read. Survivors include her sons, James Anthony Jr. and wife Weida of Denton, and Mike Anthony and wife Bonnie of Odessa; a daughter, Debbie Sweeden and husband Benny of Odessa; her mother, Queenie Bruce of Lamesa; a brother, Bob Bruce and wife Rita of Lamesa; a sister, Wyvone ONeal and husband Pat of Houston; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband and father preceded her in death. _________________________________________________________________ Mabel Howard MCCAMEY Mabel Lane Howard, 91, of McCamey, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jodie Windbigier and Sheldon Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Rankin Cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of McCamey. Mrs. Howard was born on Feb. 22, 1910, in Upton County, Texas. She was a lifetime resident of Upton County. She was a housewife and was a member of the Womens Study Club. She served on the Rankin Cemetery Association Board, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Allie Lane; her husband, Harry Howard in 1983; and a daughter, Sondra Storie in 1984. Survivors include a son, Scott Skidmore of Reno, Nev.; grandsons, John Storie and wife Debbie of McCamey, and Neal Storie of Austin; great-grandchildren, Lane and Jonathan Storie, and Becky and Jacob Roever, all of McCamey; sister-in-law, Velma Barron of San Angelo; and lifelong friend Paul Patterson of Crane. _________________________________________________________________ Ann Slade Shreveport Ann Slade, age 90, of Odessa, passed away in Shreveport, La. on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. Services are scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jim Ray Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Slade was born Jan. 26, 1911, in DeLeon to William and Martha Carnes. She came to Odessa around 1935. Ann had attended Immanuel Baptist Church and was a sitter and companion for many over the years. Survivors include her son, Dub Slade and his wife Patricia; a sister, Billie Little of Irving; sisters-in-law, Jimmie Carnes of Odessa, Katherine Carnes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Blanche Carnes of Odessa; also numerous nieces and nephews. Seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
