August 11, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Elizabeth M. Johnson ODESSA Elizabeth M. Johnson, 76, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Gunnison, Colo. Mrs. Johnson moved to Odessa in 1962. She was a retired sales representative for Sears, Roebuck and Co. She is survived by sons, Steven E. Johnson and wife Margaret of Kettle Falls, Wash., Stanley E. Johnson and wife Leslie of Topeka, Kan., and Wade Johnson and wife Cody of Sagle, Idaho; daughter, Katherine Kernodle and husband Rex of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Clarence E. Skellenger of Ridgefield, Wash.; sister, Marie Skellenger of Ridgefield; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 11, 2001, at Antioch Christian Church with Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Donald Dale Porter ODESSA Donald Dale Porter, 67, of Blanket died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. He was born April 15, 1934, in Indian Creek. He retired from Phillips Petroleum Co. after 40 years. He was raised in Brown County and lived in Odessa from 1952 until moving back to Blanket in 1996. He married Rowena Moad on June 4, 1960, in Odessa. He was Baptist. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 11, 2001, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Griffin Jones officiating. He is survived by his wife, Rowena Porter of Blanket; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Kendal Smith of Brownwood and Cindi Linette and David Wilkerson of Odessa; four grandchildren, Angela Naquin and husband Corey of Louisiana, Jodie Crocker of Colorado, Justin Crocker of Texas and Cory Porter Wilkerson of Odessa; three great-grandchildren, Graham, Gabriella and Zoe, all of Louisiana; and two sisters, Virginia Farling and Faye Dorf, both of California. Arrangements by Davis-Morris Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Alpha O. Howard ODESSA Alpha O. Howard, age 87, of Odessa passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at her residence. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Sunray with Kermit Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Lane Memorial Cemetery. Services will be under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors. Local arrangements are by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Alpha O. Howard was born Nov. 11, 1913, in Haskell to Shelby Coffee Bell and Willie Elizabeth Boles Bell. She married Ben Howard on Jan. 7, 1939, in Clinton, Okla. She and her husband had owned and operated Sunray Hardware and Furniture for over 40 years. Ben preceded her in death in 1982. She and Ben enjoyed traveling and fishing. They traveled to Colorado yearly for many years to fly fish. One thing she enjoyed so much was to cook. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed being with her family and friends. Survivors include her daughters, Linda Kay Sweatt and husband Charles of Odessa and Annetta Poe and husband Alton of Midland; a sister, Jean Bain of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Nita Bell of Fritch, Monta Holt of Tularosa, N.M., VaLois Bell of Fritch, Betty Bell of Clarendon and Lela Bell of Fritch; grandchildren, Scott and Judy Poe of St. Cloud, Fla., Chuck Sweatt of Dallas, Steve and Alisha Poe of Cedar Park, Susan Sweatt of Odessa, Craig and Kelley Poe of The Colony and Greg and Kris Sweatt of Sugar Land; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be made to Community Care Hospice.
