September 11, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Maudie Mozell Ashburn ODESSA - Maudie Mozell Ashburn, 94, of Odessa went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born March 4, 1907, in Iredell. She married Plummer Ashburn on Nov. 21, 1941. They moved to Odessa in 1945. Maudie was a hairdresser and in her spare time she loved to sing, play the organ and guitar and paint beautiful pictures. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and a sister. Survivors are her beloved husband, Plummer Ashburn of Odessa; sisters, Evelyn Haught of Kermit and Fannie Blue of Clifton; and 36 nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 11, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Royce D. Smith IRAAN - Royce D. Smith, a resident of Iraan for 46 years, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at the McCamey Convalescent Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 11, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Iraan with the Rev. Rick Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Chapel of Iraan. Royce was born to Willie Joe and Leroy Smith on Nov. 15, 1925. His early years were spent in Colorado City. After graduation from Colorado City High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. After returning from the Army, he attended McMurry University where he played college football. After college, Royce taught school and coached football in Haskell from 1949 to 1955. Royce and his family moved to Iraan in 1955 as head football coach for several years, and then he became Iraan Elementary School principal until his retirement in 1984. Royce was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iraan where in his younger days served as lay speaker, taught the men's Sunday school class, served as head of trustees committee and sang in the choir. He was a past member of the Iraan Lions Club. Royce was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis Green Smith; and a brother, Jack Smith. He is survived by his wife, Anita Smith of Iraan; daughters, Philda Morrison and her husband Tommy of Seminole, Dee Ann Hunt and her husband Jim of Douglas, Wyo., and Sandra Turner and her husband Clarke of Big Lake; a son, Ed Hicks and his wife Robin of Hurricane, W. Va.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Henry Anderson, Randy Doege, Gary Harvey, Joe Rivas, Ted Sellers and Mark Clifton. Honorary pallbearers include colleagues and friends.
