September 12, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Glen Sikes ODESSA - Johnnie Glen Sikes, age 78, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M. His parents and eight brothers preceded him in death. A military graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 12, 2001 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Kerry Peacock officiating. Military honors provided by VFW Post No. 4372. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Glen Sikes was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Parks Camp to Joseph H. Sikes and Mary Mattie Taylor Sikes. He moved with his family at an early age to the Permian Basin area. He resided in Wink and had worked as a sales clerk before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He was a radio gunner on a B-24 flying 26 missions. Among his decorations were three Bronze Battle Stars and the Air Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. After the war, Glen settled in Odessa. He married Bettenelle Roberts on Aug. 4, 1948. They were the owners of Clyde's Burger, Sikes and Sikes Grocery and Western Burger. Glen loved to fish, play cards and cook. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Bettenelle Sikes of Odessa; a son, Johnnie Glen Sikes II and his wife Zena of Odessa; his daughters, Becky Melinda Wiscombe and her husband Steve of Odessa and Karen Vonn Pettis and her husband David of Alabama; a brother, E.L. Sikes and his wife Jackie of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation. Eldon L. Turner GRANDFALLS - Eldon L. Turner, longtime resident of Grandfalls, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at Ward Memorial Hospital following a long illness. He was 85. Mr. Turner was a resident of the Monahans Managed Care Center. Eldon was born July 26, 1916, in Rising Star. He married Luzelle Ballard on June 5, 1943, in Lubbock. She preceded him in death in 1997. Eldon moved to Grandfalls in 1980, following the death of his beloved Luzelle, to care for his aging parents. He was a retired auto mechanic. Eldon was also a veteran, an amateur carpenter and an avid gardener, a feat all in itself in West Texas. It has been said that he raised some of the most beautiful roses in Grandfalls. Eldon is survived by his sister, Audrea Colls of Eldorado; a niece, Vickie Schwiening of Eldorado; five nephews; and numerous cousins. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 12, 2001, at Tamarisk Cemetery in Grandfalls. Reverend Mulls from the Union Church will officiate. Pallbearers are Jim Crawford, Chuck Corean, Dave Geurin, Jack Dawdy, Bobby Smith, Ben Keele and Charlie L. Wilcox. Arrangements are being handled by Harkey Funeral Home.
