September 23, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Wilhelmena Babcock KERMIT - Wilhelmena Babcock, 84, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 in Austin. She had been a 50-year resident of Kermit, moving from there in May of 2000. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at Kermit Cemetery. Arrangements by Cooper Funeral Chapel in Kermit. She was born in Iowa Park, Texas on July 18, 1917 to Earl and Mary Block Johnson. She was married to Joseph Henry Babcock on Nov. 19, 1937 in Pampa, Texas. He predeceased her Jan. 24, 1995. She was a member of the Highland Village Church of Christ in Austin and had previously been a member of the Westside Church of Christ in Kermit. She is survived by: son and daughter-in-law Joe and Betty Babcock of Hobbs, N.M., daughter and son-in-law Sweetie and John Costanzi of Austin; adopted son and daughter-in-law Don and Beverly Perry of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Earlene Childers of Colemax, Tu and Evelyne Inman of Plainview; one brother, John Johnson of Pampa; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jennie Boling ODESSA- "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." - 2 Timothy 4:7 Jennie Bess Boling, 81, ended her long battle with Parkinson's (Shy Drager) Syndrome on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at the Hospice House in Odessa. Jennie was born in Cleburne, Texas on October 16, 1919, to Myrtle and Ed Lanham. She and Raymon L. Boling married Dec. 25, 1937, in Granbury and have celebrated over 63 years of marriage. They moved to Odessa in April 1952 with their three daughters. Jennie loved her role as wife and homemaker. Being at home cooking, sewing and baking birthday cakes for family members brought her much pleasure. With the help of the family her granddaughter, Karen, compiled a cookbook containing loving memories and favorite recipes to honor "Grandmother" in 1997. Jennie also found great joy in serving others and meeting their needs. For 25 years, she taught five-year-olds in Sunday School at First Baptist Church where she and Raymon have been members for 49 years. At one time, Jennie was active in the Ladies Auxiliary at Medical Center Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband, Raymon; her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Poteet of Grand Prairie, Madalyn and James Baker of Menlo Park, Calif., and Louise and Gary Watson of Odessa; grandchildren and their spouses, Karen and Danny Kennemur of Grand Prairie, Jenni and Steve Summers of Grand Prairie, Randy and Peggy Poteet of Irving, Dal and Linda Watson of Midland, Nolan and Connie Watson of Lubbock, Zane Watson of Lubbock, Russell Baker of Kansas City, Mo., and Lane Baker of Los Angeles; and great-grandchildren, Jerrod Kennemur, Joshua Kennemur, Jennifer Kennemur, Talitha Summers, Shelby Summers, Carly Poteet, Melanie Watson, Will Watson, Luke Watson, McKaleigh Watson, and Landry Watson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Linda Sue, her only sister, Ila Mae Kidd; and a nephew Dick Kidd. Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Her six grandsons will affectionately serve as pallbearers. Medlock Reflection of Life "A Man After God's Own Heart" Ecclesiastes 3:1 To Everything There is a Season A Time to Be Born. ODESSA - The Rev. Arvin D. Medlock was born Sept. 21, 1930 in Grosbeck, Texas to the proud parents of Reed Medlock and Elnora Archie. I Corinthians 13:11 When I Was A Child The Rev. Medlock moved to Odessa at a young age and was educated in the Ector County Independent School District, Fredrick Douglas School. John 3:16 Whosoever Believeth His faith was united in God with Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church under pasturage of the Rev. E.G. Gates. He later united with the Bethlehem Baptist Church under the divine leadership of the Rev. R.S. Sutton and remained a faithful servant until he heard the call from his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to "Go preach my word." Proverbs 18:22 He Who Finds a Wife The Rev. Medlock met and united into holy matrimony to Florine Beck. Four children were born to this union: Clarence, Joann, Patricia and Randy. They remained a happy couple for 40 years. I Corinthians 4:12 We Work Hard With Our Hands The Rev. Medlock was employed with Sewell Ford and retired after 21 years of loyal service. He later was employed with Britt Imports of Midland and in later years was employed with Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home for many years a very faithful and loyal employee to all companies he served. Isaiah 61:1 The Lord Has Anointed Me to Preach The Rev. Medlock accepted the call to the gospel ministry in 1966 at the Bethlehem Church under the Rev. R.S. Sutton. But the urge was so great to lead God's people he organized The Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in 1971 with just a few baptized believers and a "whole lot of prayer." The church grew by leaps and bounds. His fiery sermons and fervent prayers would bring the house down every Sunday. He was a praying man. He believed the prayers of the righteous man availeth much. He served in the St. Paul District Association as moderator at large for several years. In later years, he served in the Permian Basin District Associatin and a member of the Southside Ministeral Alliance and other organizations in and around the city. In 1984 he married the apple of his eye, Betty Shelton. One child was born from this union, Arvin. Betty remained close to his side attending to all of his needs until death. Medlock of Odessa, Columbus Medlock and wife, Janette of Odessa, Colonus Roberson Jr. of Odessa; sister, Joyce M. Thomas of Albuquerque; aunts, Inez West, Edna Fields, Idina Miller; uncle Baba Ruth Archie; several grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Hanson officiating. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Lawrence G. 'Larry' Johnson ATLANTA, Ga. - Lawrence G. "Larry" Johnson, 55, of Atlanta died in Atlanta on Sept. 20, 2001. Mr. Johnson was a registered professional engineer for over 34 years and currently was a Planning, Programming, and Design Manager for Rosser International in Atlanta. He was awarded Friend of the University Award from Albany State University for his successful leadership of their Flood Recovery. Mr. Johnson also worked on some nationally known projects such as the International Plaza in downtown Atlanta and the renovation of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. He is preceded in death by his father, J.T. Johnson and is survived by his wife, Rosemary Durrett of Atlanta; son, Elliott Johnson of Atlanta; mother, Lena Kate Johnson of El Paso; and brother, Carl T. Johnson of El Paso. Manuel Garcia Pando ODESSA - Manuel Garcia Pando, 62, passed away on Sept. 20, 2001 at Medical Center Hospital. He was born on Oct. 21, 1938 in Miokee, Mexico. Survivors include his wife, Connie Pando of Odessa; stepson, Jesus Flores of Las Vegas, Nev.; stepdaughters, Bertha Morga of Las Vegas, Nev., Elsa Maleport of Honolulu, Hawaii, Marta Morga of Odessa; brothers, Alfonso Pando, Aurelio Pando, Adolfo Pando, Amador Pando all of Odessa, Ambrosia Pando of Phoenix; sister, Lupe Hernandez of Odessa; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation was Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home.
