"Blackie" Blackwell, my husband and our father and grandfather, went home to the loving arms of Jesus on Oct. 10, 2001, at home after a long battle with illness. He fought the good fight of faith and now he is whole again. Blackie was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Okemah, Okla., to Owen and Edna Blackwell. Blackie was a well-respected and well-loved businessman and member of the Midland community since 1969. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years, serving as tank commander in the Korean War. He also served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He owned and operated American Roustabouts until he had to retire in 1986 due to illness. Blackie married Dorothy Gubert on July 15, 1955, in Alvin. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary; brother, Dan; granddaughter, Dodi Burton; and parents, Owen and Edna Blackwell. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Troy McCall of Midland; his daughter, Elaine Minor of Arlington; three grandsons, Larry Burton of Midland, Billy Monroe of Arlington and Chris McCall of Midland; his sister, Frances Penick of Midland; his brother, Nathaniel Blackwell of Oklahoma City; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service has been scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Oct. 12, 2001, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Larry Ashlock of Fort Worth, formerly of Crestview Baptist Church of Midland, and the Rev. Gale Wilson and J.D. Crawford officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Burton, Billy Monroe, Chris McCall, Al Cooper, Bill Zeitler and Jeff Welter. Box 2621, Midland, Texas, 79702, or any other charity of your choice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Esta Vera Eubanks ODESSA - Esta Vera Eubanks, 85, of San Angelo, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at a San Angelo Nursing Home. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Bob Zap, an Andrews Presbyterian minister, officiating. Esta was born March 15, 1916, to Walter and Susan Waltrip in Tahlequah, Okla. She married Maynard F. Eubanks on Dec. 29, 1932, in Humble City, N.M. He preceded her in death in 1984. She was a housewife and a longtime resident of San Angelo. She is survived by a son, Jamie Eubanks and wife Shirley of San Angelo; two granddaughters, Elaine Thomas and husband Cliff of Richardson and Karen Beard and husband Kent of Katy; and three great-grandchildren, Bryce Thomas, Allison Thomas and Carson Beard. Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frieda Marie Mitchell ODESSA - Frieda Marie Mitchell, 87, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Hospice House. Mrs. Mitchell was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Kaw, Okla. She married Joe Mitchell on May 2, 1935, in Braman, Okla. They moved to Odessa in 1937. Mrs. Mitchell had been a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and was charter member of the Women's Society Christian Service. She had been a former member of the Odessa Garden Club and was a floral designer for over 30 years. She received the "Woman of the Year" award from the Circle 5 Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and also had been a past president. She had worked for Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home for 43 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Mitchell; a son, Joey; and two sisters, Kathrynne Riddle and Audrey Davis. She is survived by her son, F.R. Mitchell and his wife Nancy of Gardendale; two granddaughters, Julie Ann Lee and Jennifer Lynn Welch, both of Odessa; three stepgrandchildren, Whitney Brady and Torey Winford, both of Odessa, and Ben Winford of Nigeria; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel. Pallbearers will be Moses Garcia, Peter Moomey, Rene Ruiz, Maurice Garcia, Tony Garcia and Lori Gonzales. Mr. Ruiz was born Nov. 4, 1963, in Odessa. He was a computer operator at Flow CO2. He was Catholic. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Moomey. His survivors include his daughter, Vianca Ruiz of Odessa; his mother, Narce Ruiz of Odessa; his father and stepmother, Pete and Mary Ruiz of Odessa; his four brothers, A.G. Carrasco of Odessa, Leslie Garcia of Sacramento, Calif., Moses Garcia of Odessa and Pete Anthony Ruiz of Odessa; and his sister, Mari Cruz Ruiz of Odessa. Alton was born April 23, 1916, in Stanton and married Imogene Morgan on Dec. 29, 1934, in Midland. He was a lifelong resident of Stanton and owned and operated grocery stores in Stanton for over 30 years. He was a member of Downtown Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. After retiring, he was active in the church and was also an active member of the Martin County Senior Citizens, the Old Sorehead Band and other community activities. He was preceded in death by a son, Alton Randall Turner; his parents, Carter and Cora Turner; three sisters, Jessie Widner, Opal Hopson and Lula Black; and two brothers, Leo Turner and O.C. Turner. Survivors include his wife, Imogene Turner of Houston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Wesley Williams of Houston and Debbie and Mark Locke of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Shannah Frambes and her husband Brian of Bronxville, N.Y., Michelle Friede and her husband Cliff of Katy, Eric Williams, Mark Alan Locke and Jeffrey Locke, all of San Antonio; four great-grandchildren, Elissa Friede, Cole Frambes, Libby Frambes and Alison Frambes; two brothers, Jack Turner of Odessa and Willard Turner of Monahans; and a sister, Corene Rives of Odessa.
