October 16, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Terry L. Gettings ODESSA - Odessa Police Corporal Terry L. Gettings, 54, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born July 16, 1947, in New Castle, Pa., to Robert Lee Gettings and Myrtle Irene Gettings. Prior to his law enforcement career, Terry served in the United States Navy from March 1966 through February 1970. He worked in law enforcement for more than 28 years. He started his career in 1973 with the Clark, Pa., Police Department. While living in Pennsylvania, he also served with Pennsylvania State Constable's Office and as a lieutenant and acting chief of police with the Union Township, Pa., Police Department. Terry began his career with the Odessa Police Department on Oct. 8, 1984. During his time with the OPD, he served as patrol officer, detective with the Crime Stoppers program, field training officer and was the crime prevention officer at the time of his death. Terry was an active member of the department's Honor Guard and Color Guard from 1990 until his death. He served as co-coordinator of the Odessa Citizens Police Academy and as the back up media relations officer for several years. He was a longtime member of the Texas Narcotic Officers Association and had served as the West Texas Region vice-president from 1996 to 2000. Terry was involved in the Texas Special Olympics for more than 17 years, and the last several years he participated in the Texas Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. He was an active member of Temple Baptist Church in Odessa. Terry had assisted in the Police Athletic League (PAL) youth program for the past eight years. Often, he would opt to take his lunch break with the PAL children because he wanted to be a positive influence in their lives. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Temple Baptist Church with the Odessa Police Chaplain, the Rev. Kyle Rogers, and Commander John Blanco, acting chief of police, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in New Castle, Pa. Local funeral arrangements under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Irene Gettings. He is survived by his daughter, Erica Lee Gettings; son, Robert Lee Gettings; father, Robert Lee Gettings; and sister, Dedra Ann Gettings, all of New Castle, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Texas Special Olympics, the Odessa Police Athletic League (PAL) or the American Cancer Society. Kristie Wright ODESSA - Kristie Wright, 18, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at University Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock. Kristie Nicole Haynes, a very special child, was born Nov. 1, 1982, in Odessa. She professed Christ at an early age. She was a member of New Birth Baptist Church. She graduated from Odessa High School in May 2000 and received her professional academic credential for childcare in June 2000. She was assistant director at Children's World Daycare. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Eugene Young of Odessa and Mack Haynes of New Orleans. She is survived by her husband, Chache Wright of Odessa; father, Jerome Haynes of New Orleans; mother, Sharon Ann Brogdon of Odessa; stepfather, Todd Brogdon of Odessa; stepmother, Faye Haynes of New Orleans; grandparents, Alice Young of Odessa and Shirley Haynes of New Orleans; great-grandmother, Gertrude Edwards of Odessa; stepbrother, Jerome Haynes Jr. of New Orleans; and sisters, Alice Daniel of Odessa, Beion Haynes and Diamond Alexas Haynes, both of New Orleans. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at New Birth Baptist Church with the Rev. Darren Willis, officiant and eulogist. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. James Armstrong MIDLAND - James Armstrong was born April 11, 1920, in Clyde to Shaw Edward Armstrong and Ora Ella (Felty) Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong served in the U.S. Army, First Calvary Division, between 1938-1946. He was a 32nd degree master mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Shriner Lodge 623 of Midland. He was preceded in death by two brothers, G.Z. Armstrong and Fynus Armstrong; and a sister, Sammie Armstrong. Survivors include five sons, J.J. Armstrong of Odessa, Terry Wayne Armstrong of Midland, Wesley Shaw Armstrong of Midland, Ethan Clay Armstrong of Mesquite and Kenneth Kevin Armstrong of Odessa; a daughter, Melissa Elaine Hale of Midland; three brothers, Edward Felty Armstrong, John Shaw Armstrong and Jake Armstrong; three sisters, Peggy Bentliff, Edith Jenkins and Mary Lue Armstrong; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Armstrong passed away early Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Hospice House in Odessa. Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. today, Oct. 16, 2001, at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Wayman Swopes of Greenwood Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Robert Culpepper BROWNWOOD - Robert Culpepper was born Feb. 21, 1943, to Terry Cecil and Ida Mae Culpepper in Levelland. He graduated from Odessa High School and worked for Amoco for 26 years. On Sept. 6, 1969, he married Patricia Ruth Trent in Denver City. They moved to Midland in 1976. Robert retired from Amoco in 1998 and moved to Liverpool. He worked for Wagner Instrumentation. Robert died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Clear Lake Hospital. Robert is survived by his wife, Pat, and four children including his son, Terry Culpepper of the Dallas area and his wife Jennifer, his daughter, Sondra Rudnick of the Dallas area and her husband Mike, his son, Kip Culpepper of Arlington and his daughter Kelly Allison of Friendswood and her husband William. Five grandchildren will miss him: Kayla Butler, Keagan Allison, Travis and Asa Culpepper and Cody Rudnick. He is also survived by a brother, Charles Culpepper of Odessa, and three sisters, Betty Sykes of Odessa, Delores Davies of the Dallas area and Nancy Stanley of Liverpool. Family visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. Leland Maples officiating. Interment will be at Burkett Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kip and Terry Culpepper, Marshall Dolloff, Chester Stanley, Bobby Trent and William Allison.
