October 21, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Carl Driver ODESSA - Carl Driver, 85, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, in Odessa. He was born June 7, 1916, in Arp. His parents were Silas and Carrie Driver. Carl served in the U.S. Air Force from Oct. 1942 to Oct. 1945. He married Mary Dorothy Almand on Dec. 27, 1946. He worked for General Refractories as a mine foreman and as a heavy equipment operator until 1958 in Troup. Later that same year, they moved to Midland where he was employed by M.F. Machen, Tripp Construction as well as Roy Rogers Construction as heavy equipment operator until 1987. He then retired and moved to Odessa. Carl was a happy man and was a Christian. He was saved by grace at Calvary and asked our Lord and Savior, Jesus, into his heart in 1956. Carl asked almost everyone he spoke with, "Are you having fun today and are you happy?" If Carl were here at this hour and could speak, he'd say, "Be happy and have fun." Carl was greatly loved by his family and well respected by all his fellow workers. His mother and father, Silas and Carrie Driver; brothers, Al, Charlie, Dave, Wesley, John and Jim Driver; and sisters, Ida Moore and Lula Mae Farmer, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Jim Driver and wife Beverly and Chris Driver and wife Janet; two daughters, Carolyn Welch and Elizabeth Driver; as well as three grandsons, a granddaughter, three great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter, who were all the joy of his life. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Don Hetherington officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Thomas Driver, James Driver, Chris Driver, Claude Almand, Arnold Almand and Coby Duncan. Memorials may be sent to the National Kidney Foundation. Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. E.J. Wendell Guthrie ODESSA - E.J. Wendell Guthrie, 73 years of age, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Shallowater to Cecil and Mary Guthrie. Mr. Guthrie was a laborer in the oilfields and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Audry Tarver on Sept. 3, 1977, in Odessa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a son. Surviving are his wife and longtime companion, Audry of Odessa; his sons, Terry Bob Guthrie of Arlington and Gary Wendell Guthrie of Odessa; brother, Neal Guthrie of Levelland; sister, Anna Twilight Acuff of Odessa, a granddaughter; six stepsons; and two stepdaughters. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military graveside services have been set for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at The City of Lubbock Cemetery in Lubbock. Services by Odessa Funeral Home. Adrian Garrett ODESSA - Adrian Garrett, 82, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital from lung cancer. He was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Commerce to Rudolph and Mae Nickelson Garrett. Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Garrett was a veteran of World War II. He served his country from 1939 to 1945 in the First Army Battalion and was awarded the EAME Service Ribbon, the Silver Star, the Bronze Arrowhead, the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a squad leader and operated the fifty-caliber machine gun. He was also a Sharpshooter Carbine, a Corporal in the 87 Armored FA BA as well as a member of the VFW. Adrian Garrett married Imogene Snow on Sept. 3, 1941, in Fletcher, Okla. They later moved to Odessa from Lawton, Okla., in 1947. He was a salesman for Hydrotex and retired with over 20 years of service. His sisters, Ruth Hallmark, Evelyn Avara and Unifaye Fisher; brothers, Tommy Garrett and Alvin Garrett; and parents, Rudolph and Mae Garrett, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Imogene Garrett of Odessa; son, Adrian "Bill" Garrett Jr. of California; daughters, Pat Gibson of Houston and Gina Garrett of Dallas; four grandchildren, Michael Gibson, Lisa Garrett Bogie, Barbara Sue Gibson and Larry Lee Garrett; and two great-grandchildren, Bryce Bogie and Garrett Bogie. Memorials may be made to the SPCA or the charity of your choice. Services are in the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
