Permian Basin Obituaries ============================================================================================ December 19, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Ofer Katzman ODESSA - Ofer Katzman, age 48, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, in Odessa. The son of the late Arie and Zipora Katzman, Ofer was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and moved to Odessa at the age of three. He was a machinist and worked at SMC Inc. Ofer was an avid sports fan and loved having his many wonderful friends at the house to watch sports events on TV. He also enjoyed playing guitar and piano. Always an animal lover, Ofer adopted many stray dogs over the years and gave them a good home. Ofer is survived by his sister, Orna Hankins and her children Allie and Matt of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Danny of Santa Fe, N.M.; aunt and uncle, Larry and Tehila Miller of Dallas; and cousins, Ori Ann Phillips, Jay Miller and Adi Cohen. He is also survived by many family members in Israel. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel. Roy Elsner will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be William "Billy" Carson, Rodney Kallanak, Michael Pitnick, Milton Porterfield, Walt Monahan and Kenny Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Bennet, Joe Bob Bizzel, Rance Carnes, Randy Echols, Bo Digby, Ted Hackney, James Hatmaker, Carl Jones, David Jones and Mickey Wilson. The family requests memorials be made to the Humane Society. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Judge John H. 'Buddy' Rogers ODESSA - Judge John H. "Buddy" Rogers, 78, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, in Odessa. Judge Rogers was born in Limestone County. He graduated from Mart High School in 1941 at which time he entered Texas A&M University, and in Dec. 1941, he left A&M to join the U.S. Navy to proudly serve his country in World War II in the Pacific serving on three ships, USS Franklin, USS Intrepid and USS Lexington. He returned to Waco and entered Baylor University Law School receiving his law degree in 1950 when he opened his law practice in Odessa. He was an Ector County judge for eight years. Judge Rogers was recognized and loved by many other attorneys and helped many people who could not afford a lawyer. He practiced law until 1998. He was a member of the Texas Bar Association and the Ector County Bar Association. He was a steward in the Odessa United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion, VFW, Chamber of Commerce and American Business Club and held most offices in the Ector County Sheriff Posse of which he was made an honorary member in 1992. He loved farming and animals. He was preceded in death by Marie Smajstrala, his wife for 47 years; a brother, "Bull" Rogers; and a sister, Louise Curlee. He is survived by his wife, Billie Weisiger Rogers; a son, Jeff Rogers and daughter-in-law, Betty; a grandson, J. Dale Rogers; sisters, Lucille Patterson, Nell Hardee and E. Fay Beavers; a brother, Fuller Rogers; stepdaughter, Margaret Pearcy; stepson, Robert Frohlich; and many loving nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Drive, with the Rev. Steve Trout officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, in Elk. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Odessa Hospice Foundation. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) Sally E. Martin ODESSA - Sally E. Martin, 88, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. She was born March 8, 1913, in Smith County. She came to Odessa in 1960 from Kermit. She loved gardening and baking. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. Her parents, a sister, a brother, a grandson, a son-in-law and her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Buddie Martin and wife Helen of Odessa; daughter, Ann Hanes of Center Ridge, Ark.; sister, Marie Mealor of Eastland; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Van Hoose officiating.
