When Olene was about two years old, her father decided to move to Texas after having to hide under the porch when the law came to get him for bootlegging. Olene grew up around Lampasas until she was ten. From there, the family moved around to San Angelo and then on to Littlefield, where drought and the Depression wiped them out. In 1935 the family headed to Big Spring and worked as farm hands. From there, it was on to San Diego to stay with her brother Mitchell. In the summer of 1942, Olene and her mother went to work for Consolidated Aircraft making bombers. Here she met Al Staas. Al had grown up in Big Springs, but the two had never met before. Olene and Al were married January 23, 1943. Upon his return from France in 1946, they bought a cafe with her brother Mitch. They sold the cafe in early 1949 and moved on to New Mexico.
