Permian Basin Obituaries ============================================================================================ December 28, 2001 Permian Basin Obituaries Obituaries Index Dillard Lloyd Handlin KERMIT - Dillard Lloyd Handlin, 89, of Kermit passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at his residence. He was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Comanche County. He had lived in Kermit since 1936 and was a retired trucking contractor. He married Pansy Louise Mulloy on June 14, 1934, and together they had four sons, Don and wife Deanna of Mason, Phil and wife Kristin of El Paso, Barry of Midland and Larry and wife Jane of Odessa. They all survive him along with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Jim of Hollywood, Fla., and three sisters, Lois White and Opal Gleaton of Odessa and Robbie Martello of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Hudie and Lou Wranza Handlin, and his brothers, Fred and Clifford. He worked for Farmers Produce in Comanche until hitch hiking to the oilfields of Winkler County in 1935. He helped build the Magnolia (later Mobil) gasoline plant outside Kermit at which he worked until 1944 and built the family's first house in Kermit himself in 1937. About the only thing in Kermit at that time was the courthouse with a fence around it, the post office and a few store buildings. The streets had no names and there were two sandy ruts in front of his house where cars often got stuck. The young family had no electricity, gas or water. They hauled water from the courthouse and used kerosene for lights and heating. Lloyd was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1258 for 50 years, Scottish Rite, served 11 years on the Kermit School Board, served as director of the Chamber of Commerce and as a director of the Oilfield Haulers Association. He was honored as a Petroleum Pioneer in 1974 by the Permian Basin Oil Show. He will be missed by so many people, but none more than by his wife and family. Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at First Baptist Church in Kermit. Interment followed at the Kermit Cemetery. Services entrusted to Cooper Funeral Chapel in Kermit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to your favorite charity or a local hospice organization.
