All rights reserved ============================================================================================ January 13, 2002 Kathleen Gibbs Leach ODESSA - Kathleen Gibbs Leach was born in Peru, Kansas on May 21, 1915. She attended Caney High School and received a life certificate to teach from Kansas State Teachers College. She married Woodrow Leach in 1936. They moved to Odessa in 1940. She belonged to the First Methodist Church where she joined the women's society of Christian services in 1941 and served as president in 1964. Kathleen belonged to the Thursday Study Club and was president in 1951. She was a charter member of the women's auxiliary to Medical Center Hospital and a charter member of Volunteers for Vision. Mrs. Leach was a member of the Auxiliary to the Texas Optometric Association and served on their board. She received the Diana Award in 1976 for community service. She was preceded in death by a son, James Leach and a grandson. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Woodrow Leach of Odessa; two daughters, Sharon O'Dell of Andrews and Nancy Bayless of Phoenix; one sister, Margaret Dussair of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be at First Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Monday with Steve Trout and Bill Heggemeier officiating. The family suggests memorials be made to First Methodist Church in Odessa. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Frederico B. Jaquez PECOS - Frederico B. Jaquez, known to his grandkids and family as "Teto" and also known as "Fred" or "Lico" to his friends, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002. He passed away at Medical Center Hospital. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Jaquez was born March 2, 1943, in Pecos to Marcelo and Antonia Jaquez. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Simon B. Jaquez. He and his wife moved to Odessa two years ago from Pecos. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Jaquez and his wife, Juana "Juanita," were longtime musicians. At the time of his death, he and his wife co-managed Mariachi Aguila and were very well known throughout West Texas and Southern New Mexico. He attended mostly San Jose Catholic Church. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Peaceful Gardens Funeral Home in Pecos. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church in Pecos. Mr. Jaquez is survived by his wife, Juana "Juanita;" son, Freddy S. Jaquez of Odessa; and daughter, Selina Machuca and Lorenzo Marquez Jr. and his most beloved grandchildren, Bianca and Zachariah Machuca, all of Midland. He is also survived by his brothers, Sebero and wife Vicenta, Greg and wife Connie and Lazaro, all of Pecos; sisters, Nati Flores and husband Silverio, Josie Elliott and husband Darrel of California, Lala Vira and husband Ramon of Pecos and Inez and husband Eulojio of Midland; and sister-in-law, Josefa Jaquez; and various nieces and nephews. Louise Haverland, who was born Nov. 21, 1927, in Egypt, Ark., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002. She was a resident of La Vida Llena Retirement Community. Louise was the loving wife of the Very Rev. John B. Haverland, Dean Emeritus of the Cathedral Church of St. John. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Orvis; brothers, William and Ronald Orvis; a sister, Betty Jean Singleton; and a grandson, Shane Spencer Haverland. Louise grew up in Tulsa, Okla., and graduated from Will Rogers High School. She attended La Canada College in Redwood City, Calif., and the University of Albuquerque. She was a licensed real estate appraiser employed by Albuquerque Federal Savings and Loan. She retired in 1988. Louise served as a volunteer Pink Lady in California and Albuquerque. She also did volunteer work in church guilds and programs as the wife of her husband. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Louise is survived by her children, Joy Lynn Cowan of Odessa, J. Robert Haverland of Dalton, Ga., Ronald Haverland of Springfield, Ky., and Susan Haverland of El Cajon, Calif. She is also survived by sisters, Sue Arrington of Tulsa, Okla., and Shirley Wilder of El Cajon, Calif.; grandchildren, Dylan Jones and Dustin Jones of Albuquerque, N.M., Davina Cowan of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Naomi Robison of Plano and Brook Haverland of Dalton, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, Fourth and Silver SW. Brothers BROCTON, Ill. - Paul T. Brothers, 51, of Brocton, Ill., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. Mr. Brothers was born April 17, 1950, in Huntington, W. Va., the son of John W. and Mabel Dirksen Brothers. He was married to Sheila Wiese of Brocton, Ill., who survives him. He is also survived by his parents of Odessa; his sister, Alice Fischer and two nieces of Palmdale, Calif.; and a stepson, Jeff Pangburn of El Paso. Mr. Brothers attended schools in St. Albans, W. Va., and Odessa, graduating from Jackson Memorial High School in Stark County, Ohio. He graduated from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, with a degree in sociology and anthropology. Mr. Brothers was a member of the Brocton Fire Department where he served on the town board. He was employed as an environmental technician with Kam Solutions in Mattoon, Ill. His memberships included Gold Panners Association of America. He was a member and former board member of the Midland and El Paso Archaeology Society as well as the Southwest Federation of Archaeology Society. Paul was a past member of Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord in Odessa. Friends remember Paul as a kind and gentle person. Stanley Smith MONAHANS - Stanley Smith, 70, was born Nov. 15, 1931, to Archie and Annie Muriel Smith in Georgetown. He died suddenly Jan. 10, 2002, at the family ranch in Crane County. Mr. Smith met and married Eva Long of Crane County while both were attending Southwestern University in Georgetown. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 28, 2001. After graduation from Southwestern in 1952, Mr. Smith moved to West Texas with Eva to begin a long-distinguished career with the Monahans-Wickett-Pyote Independent School District. Mr. Smith was a principal with the Monahans school for 30 of his 35 years with the system, the last 20 years as principal of Monahans High School. After retiring from education in 1987, Mr. Smith turned his part-time ranching career into a full-time career. He was also an active volunteer with several organizations in Monahans. Mr. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monahans, the Rotary Club, Ward County Retired Teachers Association, Monahans Main Street, director of the first Butterfield Overland Stagecoach and Wagon Festival and the Kermit Bass Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and had also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Monahans Jaycees. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Shelley V. Smith. He is survived by his wife, Eva of Monahans; a son, Robert Ell Smith and his wife Oleta of Soper, Okla.; a daughter, Lois Ann McKenzie and her husband Kirke of Iraan; grandsons, Robert "Scooter" Dixon and his wife Gena of Tulia and Shane McKenzie and his wife Laura of San Angelo; granddaughters, Robyn Stanford and husband Jay of Andrews, Candace Smith of Hartshorne, Okla., Stephanie and Shawna Smith of Soper, Okla., and Shelley Hanson and husband Ron of San Pedro, Calif.; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Billee Lou Harris of Monahans and Shirley Smith of Abilene; a special niece, Pam Treadaway of Monahans; and nephews, Vance Smith of Three Rivers and Seth Smith of Dallas. Debbie Cranfill ODESSA - Debbie Cranfill, 50, of Odessa, a waitress, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born December 31, 1951, to Robert and Jean Cranfill in Columbus, Ohio. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Ray Brown officiating. She is survived by her partner and soul mate of five years, Larry Jacobson; her mother, Jean Cranfill of San Diego; brothers, Bruce Cranfill and Robert Cranfill, both of San Diego; and sister, Sharon Staley of Birmingham, Mich.; two nephews, one niece and one great-niece. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Cy E. Foster MIDLAND - Cy E. Foster age 65, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Hospice House. Cy was born Sept. 22, 1936, in Midland to Cy and Merle Foster. He was raised in Sundown and attended San Angelo State College. The past 10 years he owned an oilfield chemical company in Midland and the previous 15 years he was sales manager and served as vice president of oilfield production chemicals of Unichem International in Hobbs, N.M. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cy is survived by his wife, Jaye Jean; sons, Chris and Chad, both of Midland, Kelly of Hobbs, N.M, and Kirby of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Amy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Carl of Lubbock and Robert of Austin; and three grandchildren, Angie, Gage and Cy. Don Douglas Beck ODESSA - Don Douglas Beck, 82, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Beck was born March 3, 1919, in Lehigh, Okla., to K.L. and Eva Beck. Don Beck and Rebecca Barnard were married April 24, 1992, in Odessa. Mr. Beck is survived by his wife, Rebecca Beck and son Don Beck of Odessa; two stepsons, Joe Barnard of Knox and Richard Barnard of Dallas; two daughters, Darla Auten of Odessa and Cheryl Farr of Odessa; and eight grandchildren. He retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant. He started the company Automatic Pipe Racker Inc. in 1967, beginning the pipe handling business in West Texas. He held several patents for the equipment. He retired in 1992. He was a member of the Texas Trapshooters Hall of Fame and many time member of the Texas State Team. Accepting induction into the Amateur Trap Shooting Association Hall of Fame in 2002 ceremonies will be senior veteran Don Beck. Mr. Beck had been captain or co-captain of five veteran All-American teams (also earning a spot on the 1987 men's second team). He captained the 1990 senior veteran team, and he placed on nine more senior veteran teams from 1991 to 2001. Beck broke 100 from the 27 in August 1989, completing the Grand Slam after four 100s in doubles from 1980 to 1989 and numerous 200s in singles throughout his 57-year shooting career. From 1986, Beck won 22 Grand American veteran trophies, including two Clay Target titles, one GAH, one All-Around and two High-Over-All. Becoming a senior veteran in 1989, he earned 27 Grand American trophies in that category in eight years, including one Clay Target, two All-Around and one High-Over-All. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Bartlett and the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. V. Lucille Holmans KERMIT - V. Lucille Holmans died Jan. 11, 2002, in the Reagan County Care Center in Big Lake, Texas. Services will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Cooper Funeral Chapel in Kermit, Texas. Burial will follow in the Kermit Cemetery. Lucille was born Sept. 3, 1907, in Mullin, Texas. She married Hector G. Holmans on Jan. 1, 1927, in Coleman County Texas. They lived in Kermit for over 50 years. Lucille loved playing dominoes and quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hector and a grandson, Dean Anderson. Lucille is survived by her sons, Harold G. Holmans and wife, Bonnie of Jal, N.M. and George Holmans and wife, Bonnie Mae of New Braunfels, Texas; daughters, Wanell Stroud and husband, Jimmie of Odessa and Anita Gregg and husband, Gerry of Big Lake; sister, Ella Brown of Coleman; brothers, J.D. Pitts of Odem, Texas, and George Robert Pitts of Albuquerque; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
