All rights reserved ============================================================================================ January 15, 2002 Permian Basin Obituaries Von Dell Drinkard ODESSA - Von Dell Drinkard, 64, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. He was born Dec. 26, 1937. He was preceded in death by his father, Jeremiah; his mother, Ada; and a sister, Wanda Faye. He was licensed to the ministry Sept. 7, 1955, and ordained to the ministry July 27, 1958. He pastored High Valley Baptist Church in San Saba for five years. He pastored Southside Baptist Church in Odessa beginning in 1961 and pastored there until the church merged with Calvary Baptist Church and became Central Baptist Church, where he continued to pastor until 1993. The Rev. Drinkard is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home; two sons, Tim of Houston and Scott of Odessa; and two wonderful grandsons, Jeremy and Alex of Odessa. He is also survived by four brothers, Preston Drinkard of Boyd, Herman and Jerry Drinkard of Brownwood and Wendell Drinkard of Arlington. Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2002, at Faith Community Church, also known as Mission Baptist Church, 9902 W. University Blvd., with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorials be made to Faith Community Church. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Jason Lynn Fields ODESSA - Jason Lynn "Jay" Fields passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. Jay was born April 10, 1974, in Odessa. He attended school in Odessa and graduated from Permian High School in 1992. In Feb. 1994, he joined the United States Marines and graduated from boot camp in Camp Pendleton, Calif. Jay completed two six-month tours abroad. He continued his military career into Special Forces and was honorably discharged in Feb. 1996. In Dec. 1996, he graduated from the Odessa Police Academy in the top five of his class as a certified Texas peace officer. Jay was an avid body builder, runner and worked as a local personal trainer. He married Tanya Turner on Feb. 12, 1996, in Carlsbad, Calif. They have a son, Jacob Thomas Fields. Jay is survived by his father, Jay Dale Fields; mother, Robin Lynn Kidd; grandparents, Frelan and Ruth Fields; sister, Gina Parker; uncle, Joey Fields; half brothers, Cory and Cody -Buck" Fields and Johnny Lynn Kidd; half sister, Emily Kidd; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Brian Swiggert officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Clyde Foster Sr. ODESSA - Clyde Foster Sr., age 77, of Weatherford died Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2002, at his residence. He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Foster, a loving husband and father, retired as a boilermaker for the Illinois Central Railroad. He also retired from Campbell Health System in 1989 from the maintenance department, and he was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served as a chief petty officer. He founded the VFW Post No. 7835 in Granbury in 1972 and was a lifetime member of that post. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Stoney Justin Palmer in 1983 and Ricky Shane Palmer in 2000. Survivors: Wife, Lydia Foster of Weatherford; daughter, Sandra Palmer of Weatherford; sons, Billy Beall and wife Carole of Weatherford, Clyde B. Foster Jr. and wife Joan of Abilene and Rocky Foster and wife Peggy of Evanston, Wyo.; sister, Elsie Rovilo of Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Melton Foster and wife Mary of Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Chance DeLaney, Sherri Kay Gonzales, Brad Foster III, Theressa Mabry, Lydia May Foster, Denise Michelle Hulce-Slayden and Chris Hulce; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preston Frazier Gott ODESSA - Professor Gott died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his residence after a bout with cancer. Professor Gott taught physics and astronomy at Texas Tech University for 41 years, retiring in 1989. He was married to Dr. Orene Peddicord, M.D., who taught at the Texas Tech Medical School 19 years. They married in 1991 and lived in Odessa near the grandchildren. Professor Gott was instrumental in developing two astronomical observatories at Texas Tech. They were Igor and the Preston F. Gott Observatory. He also developed his own private observatory, the Mountainside Observatory in Fort Davis. He is still listed as senior scientist at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., where he worked his summers on the Moon and Mars Lander Projects. He was a true gentleman whom all his students and colleagues revered. His degree was in optics. He loved the stars and is now among them. He donated his remains to U.T. Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas so that he could continue to help students in medicine learn. He is the donor of the Gott Gold Tooth Award in the physics department at TTU for student scholarships. He is survived by his wife, Orene of Odessa; and son, Eugene Gott of Austin. Jane Pointer Greenhill MIDLAND - Deidra Jane Pointer Greenhill was born Aug. 10, 1930, to Alvin Bertram Pointer and Pearl Beatrice Friday Pointer. She grew up in Pecos and married Joe Ed Greenhill on Aug. 19, 1955, in Fort Davis. She was a member of First Christian Church. Mrs. Greenhill was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Pointer, and her brother, the Rev. Neil Pointer. Survivors include her husband, Joe Greenhill of Midland; sons, Tommy Greenhill and wife Jackie of Red Oak and Steve Greenhill and wife Haydee of Odessa; daughter, Kathryn Roberts and husband Dennis of Giddings; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Lou Pozzi of Newport Beach, Calif., and Frazee McAnally and husband W.C. of Fort Stockton; and a sister-in-law, Lavonda Pointer of Fort Worth. Armando Madero ODESSA - Armando Madero, 49, a former carpet layer, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home in Odessa. Mr. Madero was born and lived in Odessa all his life. He was preceded in death by his father, Antonio Madero, and sister, Mary -Cuca" Madrid. He is survived by mother, Erminia Madero; his son, Armando Madero Jr.; and three daughters, Melanie, Marissa and Myra Madero, all of Odessa. He leaves behind three beloved grandsons, Ethan, Jordan and Abram Madero, all of Odessa. His brothers are Antonio Madero Jr., Jesse Madero and Joe Madero (Diane), all of Odessa, and Alonzo Madero (Roxanne) of Giddings. His sisters include Emma Acosta (Jose), Ramona Leon, Edia Garand (Bruce), Beatriz Madero (Lanny) and Maggie Gomez (George), all of Odessa, and Sylvia Harris (Jeff) of Midland. He was born March 26, 1952, in Odessa to Antonio Madero and Erminia Pompa. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. Ruben C. Martinez ODESSA - Ruben C. Martinez, 53, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his residence in Odessa. He was born May 5, 1948, to Santiago and Rafela Martinez Jr. in Loraine. Mr. Martinez married Rosa Medrano on Oct. 14, 1968, and came to Odessa in 1969 from Colorado City. He served his country during the Vietnam War from Oct. 17, 1968, to Oct. 16, 1970. With a degree in communications technology, he graduated from Odessa College and was employed as a service manager with Industrial Communications Inc. of Motorola for 33 years. He was the president of the Optimist Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed drag racing and rebuilding cars. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Kilkuck, Iowa. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Satchell lived in Odessa for 42 years and was previously a resident of Brenham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her father, Jordan Flowers; her mother, Annie Mae Woods-Flowers; and sons, Flowd Penny and Rufus Ray. She is survived by her daughter, Emma Moorer (Joe) of Odessa; sister, Mary Stanton of Odessa; and grandchildren, Carolyn Gibbs (Sam) of Odessa, Darrell Gibbs (Madeline) of Odessa, Kenneth Ray of Jacksboro, Regina Ray of Jacksboro, Edward Lee Ray of Jacksboro, Lisa Penny of Fort Worth and Pamela Penny of Fort Worth.
