Mathews, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002. She was born March 18, 1928, in Broken Bow, Okla., to Robert and Willa Montgomery. She graduated valedictorian from Broken Bow Junior High where she was and avid reader and played the trumpet and French horn in the band. Her family moved to San Antonio where she graduated from Breckenridge High School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she met her husband, Forest H. Mathews. They married May 29, 1949, in Odessa and had been married for 52 years. While in Austin, she worked full-time for Southwestern Bell as a switchboard operator. In 1950, they moved to Odessa where she was a substitute teacher for the Odessa school system for five years. A Christian since 9 years of age, she was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught preschoolers for many years and rang in the handbell choir. Her hobbies included sewing, reading and playing duplicate bridge, for which she had been awarded Life Master in 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Robbie Longmire. She is survived by her husband, Forest; daughters, Julia Sorbers and husband Jack of Houston and Celia Ray and husband Mark of Temple; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. A private interment will follow at Ector County Cemetery. Services entrusted to Frank W. Velma Pearl Hanks ODESSA - Velma Pearl Hanks, 75, of Odessa passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002, in Odessa. She was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Smackover, Ark. to W.A. and Chiniese Rowell. Velma married Joseph Simons in February of 1947. He preceded her in death in 1950. She moved to Odessa in 1953 from Goldsmith. She married Cecil Hanks on May 20, 1953 in Odessa. She enjoyed arts and crafts. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Her parents and three sisters, Mary Rowell, Bea Neeley, and Louise Merritt preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Cecil O. Hanks of Odessa; son Cecil A. "Tony" Hanks & wife Brenda of Odessa; son, Michael Hanks & wife Sandi of Sweeney, Texas; son, Gerald "Bubba" Simons of Blackwell, Texas; daughter, Lynda Hanks- Eaton & husband, Mike of Monahans; daughter, Margie Simons-Kennedy & husband Terry of Odessa; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mike Hanks officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frank Chavez. Burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Robert L. Grubb ODESSA - Robert L. Grubb, 86, of Odessa passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1916. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was retired owner of Odessa Frozen Food for many years. He was a dedicated Mason and a member of the Midland Masonic Lodge No. 623 A.F. and A.M., Keystone Chapter No. 172, Keystone Council No. 112, Midland Commander No. 84 and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He has received the Golden Trowel Award and held an "A" teaching certificate. He was preceded in death by wives Paula Grubb in 1978 and Dorothy Grubb in 1987. He is survived by his son, Bobby Grubb of Kilgore, stepson, Dan McGraw of Saint Jo, Texas; sister, Eva Costen of Kerrville, five stepgrandchildren, and half sister Louise Campbell of Houston. Viewing will be at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Masonic graveside will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
