All rights reserved ================================================================================ ============ Sunday May 12, 2002 Obituaries Johnna Wilkerson ODESSA - Johnna Wilkerson, 40, passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, in Midland County. She was born May 30, 1961, in Perryton, Texas. Johnna moved to Odessa in 1970. She was married to David Medlin for ten years. They were wed on March 8, 1985. Later, she married Mitchell Wilkerson on Feb. 20, 1998, in Odessa. She worked for the Bobby Cox Companies for eight years and was a member of the Sherwood Christian Academy School Board. She taught women's Bible studies, and enjoyed sewing and cross-stitching. There is a family visitation scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2002. Services are scheduled for 4 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2002, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Her mother, Gwendolyn Jeanne Allen, and grandparents, Gene and Grace Akers, and Irvin Allen all preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Mitchell Wilkerson; son, Jonathan Medlin; stepson, Brandon Wilkerson; stepdaughters, Tanisha Stevens and Keesha Wilkerson, all of Odessa. Also surviving her are her parents, Bill Allen of Odessa, and Chuck and Mary Griffin of Wichita, Kan.; sister, Stephanie Todd of Midland; one grandchild, Dalton Stevens of Odessa; nieces and nephews, Taylor, Madison, and Dillon Todd of Midland, and Michael Rex of Odessa; aunt and uncle, Sue and Larry Lackey and their children, Shelly and Larry, of Temecula, Calif. Memorials may be made to Sherwood Christian Academy in Johnna's memory. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. James "J.W." Brantley MCGREGOR - James "J.W." Brantley of McGregor died Thursday, May 9, 2002, in McGregor at the age of 80. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Cole Funeral Home Chapel in McGregor, with the Rev. Danny Reeves officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Mr. Brantley was born Sept. 15, 1921 in Valley Mills, Texas, the son of the late James Nathaniel and Lola Launa (Baldridge) Brantley and was a 1942 graduate of Walnut Springs High School where he played football with the nickname of "Lizzard." He married Ruby LaNell Lindsey in Hereford, Texas who preceded him in death Oct. 16, 1986. On May 14, 1990, he married Lorene Roberts in Midessa Heights. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945. He was employed by Gardner-Denver Oil Field Company in Odessa. In 1991, he moved to McGregor from Midessa Heights and became a member of the First Baptist Church of McGregor. Survivors include his wife, Lorene Brantley of McGregor; one son, James Weldon Brantley of Midland; two daughters, Jana Sue Hawkins of Burnett, Patti Lynette Pullen of Midland; one sister, Ethel Sowell of Glen Rose; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Larry Howard Hoover ODESSA - Larry Howard Hoover, 60, of Odessa died May 9, 2002, at his residence. Larry was born Jan. 17, 1942 in Oklahoma City, Okla. to Lewis H. and Juanita Kleinegger Hoover. The family moved to Odessa in 1955. He married June Chandler on May 29, 1961 in Odessa. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, June Hoover; his mother, Juanita Hoover of Odessa; two daughters, Terri Baker and husband, Valon, and Tammi Rodgers; grandchildren, Brandon and Brittani Baker and Josh Rodgers; mother-in- law Ada Chandler; one nephew, Kevin Chandler and wife, Cyndi, one niece, Kelli Welch and husband, Brian; two great-nephews; and three great-nieces, all of Odessa. Larry also leaves a lifetime of dear friends. Larry was preceded in death by his father Lewis H. Hover, his father-in-law, Howard Chandler and his brother-in-law Jimmy Chandler. In May 1966, he received a Chemical Engineering degree from Texas Tech University and went to work for El Paso Products Company in Odessa. He received his Professional Engineers license in 1971 and earned a Masters of Engineering degree from Texas Tech in 1972. He also earned a Masters of Business Administration degree in 1977 from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He worked as a design/consulting engineer from 1983 to 1996 in various locals in the United States. Larry worked from 1996 to the present as a systems safety engineer for the Huntsman Corporation. Larry was past president and a dedicated member of the Downtown Lions Club for 30 years. He was past president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He was proud to serve the city of Odessa for several terms as a member of the Mechanical Board and this past year on the Zoning and Planning board. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Odessa Downtown Lions Club Charities, 1101 N. Whitaker, Odessa or the Bynum School, a school for special needs children, 8404 West County Road, Midland. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 12, 2002, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Josepha De La O ODESSA - Josepha De La O, 95, passed away May 10, 2002, at her residence in Odessa. She was born on March 19, 1907 in San Antonio Del Bravo, Mexico to Marcellino and Rosario Sanchez. She was married to the late Carlos De La O. She was a Catholic and a homemaker. She is survived by three daughters, Raimunda (Rai) Prado and husband, Eloy, Petra (Pat) De La O, and Lorene Ramirez and husband, Fermin, all of Odessa; seven grandchildren, Eloy Prado, Josie Prado, Christina Rodriguez, Carlos Galindo, Rosie Diaz, Patty Sotelo, and Laura Ramirez; and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Carlos, three infant children and brother and sisters. Pallbearers will be Eloy D. Prado, Ricky Diaz, Christina Rodriguez, Fausto Sotelo, Alfred Castillo Jr., Josie Prado and Carlos Galindo. Rosary will be recited at Odessa Funeral Home on Sunday May 12, 2002, at 7 p.m. Mass services will be celebrated Monday, May 13, 2002, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Eldon Harvey Maney ODESSA - Eldon Harvey Maney, 82, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in Odessa. He was born March 3, 1920 to Harvey and Elsie Maney in Carterville, Missouri. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Eldon served in the U.S. Marines during World War II as a gunnery sergeant. He came to Odessa in 1951 from Wichita Falls. He was owner/operator of White House Meat Market since 1956. He was ex-president of Ector County Sheriff's Posse. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. Both parents, a sister Glenda; brothers, Olan, Tex, Delvert and Norman; and a grandson David preceded him in death. He is survived by a son John Maney of Kingsland; son Olan Maney & wife, Jane, of Odessa; son Randy Maney & wife Trudy of Bastrop; daughter Jan Benton & husband Wayne of Amarillo; brothers Leonard Maney and Odis Maney of Wichita Falls; sisters Loita Farley and Ruth Davis of Wichita Falls, Verna Rogers of Orange, Ca. and Dana Brookman of Athens; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Sue Hirsch MIDLAND - Sue Hirsch died midnight, May 11, 2002, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland after a lengthy illness. Sue was born May 12, 1923, in New Orleans, Louisiana to David Pearce and Lila Littleton Caruthers. She attended the University of Tennessee and graduated in 1949 with a B.A. degree in English Literature from Texas Tech University. Sue and her mother moved to Midland in 1944. Sue went to work for Humble Oil and Gas and joined First Presbyterian Church. She helped start the church library and taught Sunday School. In 1947 she met Nolan Hirsch, her future husband. Sue and Nolan married Nov. 11, 1950 in San Antonio. They were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, now Trinity Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School in this church as well. They lived in Midland from 1947 until 1956 when they moved to Fort Worth. In Fort Worth, Sue was involved with her children's school and activities. She served as a Bluebird leader for both of her daughters. She was active in volunteer activities including a children's home through the Presbyterian Church. Sue and Nolan were charter members of St. Giles Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth. They moved back to Midland in 1969 where she rejoined First Presbyterian Church serving actively as a circle member. She volunteered with the Trinity Towers Auxiliary and Casa de Amigos. She loved bridge and played over 20 years with a regular foursome. At the same time, she was the regular substitute for 30 years for yet another bridge club. She was an active member and officer of the Contemporary Study Club. Sue was known for her humor and creative gift of rhyme. Everyone looked forward to the "minutes" of the meetings and her annual Christmas poem. She imparted her love of literature, reading, and musical theater to her children, who grew up knowing every song from the old Broadway musicals. Music filled her life and the life of her children and grandchildren, all of whom have studied music at some time. Through loving support, she conveyed her profound commitment to education. Sue is survived by her husband, Nolan Hirsch of Midland, children Melissa Hirsch, J.D., of Odessa, TX, Cathy Hirsch Hamilton, Ph. D. of Greencastle, IN and her husband William Timothy Hamilton, Ph. D., and Victor Nolan Hirsch, Ph. D., and his wife Janice Bailey Hirsch, of League City, TX. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren as well: Catherine Gwen, Lila Frances, and Nathanael Hirsch Hamilton, Victoria Lee and Natalie Sue Hirsch, and Santa Claire Hirsch. Funeral services have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002 in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Texas in Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Yuen Tze Lo ODESSA - Yuen Tze Lo, 82, passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at Hospice House in Odessa. He was born Jan. 31, 1920, to Yuen and Tsao Lo, in Han Chow, China. He was an electrical engineering professor. Survivors include his wife, Sara Lo of Illinois; son, Dr. Lawrence Lo of Odessa; daughter, Susan Lo of Vancouver, Washington; brother, Yuen Hsing Lo of Kansas City, MO; two sisters of China; and five grandchildren.
