All rights reserved =========================================================================== Wednesday June 19, 2002 Genaro Alberto Moncayo Jr. ODESSA - Genaro Alberto Moncayo Jr., 9, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Permian General Hospital in Andrews. He was born to Genaro Alberto Moncayo Sr. and Maria Luisa Venegas on Aug. 25, 1992, in Odessa. He was a student at Goliad Elementary School. Genaro was very joyful child and enjoyed playing, running, singing and playing the drums at church. He was considerate of others. He was a member of Casa de Oracion and Templo Maranatha. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, June 19, 2002, at Memorial Services Chapel, 404 N. Washington Ave., with the Rev. Guillermo Morales officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Genaro Alberto Moncayo, and great- grandfather, Anastacio Moncayo. He is survived by his mother, Maria Luisa Venegas of Odessa; father, Genaro A. Moncayo Sr. of Odessa; brother, Jesus Abram Moncayo of Odessa; sister, Maricela Moncayo of Odessa; and grandparents, Maria Guzman of Odessa and Epifanio and Maria Luisa Venegas of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Services are entrusted to Memorial Services, 404 N. Washington Ave., Odessa. Ann Sluder ODESSA - Amma Ann Sluder, age 61, of Odessa passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Seabury Nursing Center. She was born Oct. 20, 1940, in Texas. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today, June 19, 2002, at Ector County Cemetery with the Rev. Dick Brown officiating. She married Donald Ray Sluder on March 19, 1965. He preceded her in death. She had lived in Odessa for 35 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was a loving mother and grandmother who will be missed by all. "We love you, Momma and Memaw." She is survived by a son, Danny Ray Sluder of Odessa; daughters, Lorrie Ann Sluder of Northridge, Calif., and Carol Pool of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Krystl Clymer of Branson, Mo., Danial Ray Sluder of Odessa and Alanna Rachelle Sluder of Odessa; a sister; two brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jesse Weddle SAN ANTONIO - Jesse Troy Weddle passed away Monday, June 17, 2002, following a prolonged illness. He was born sometime between 23 August 22 and 17 May 1925, depending on the documentation you are reading, "Somewhere in Texas or Arkansas after an oilfield blew up." A one-time resident and restaurateur in Odessa, Jess was a former Marines sergeant who saw action in both World War II and Korea where he received the Purple Heart. Following his medical retirement from the Marine Corps, he became master chef, overseeing the operations of exclusive clubs from New York to Chicago. He opened several operations of his own with associates or family members as his partners before "retiring" to Florida. Following an initial bout with cancer in Florida, he moved to San Antonio to be closer to his nephew Jimmy's family and the fine staff at the Audi Murphy VA Hospital. He is survived by three sons, Woodie Leonard and his wife Donna of Odessa, B. Paul Weddle and his wife Margaret of Arizona and Benny So and his wife Shirley of Simi Valley, Calif.; and his sister, Clara Sasser and her husband Lloyd of Reno, Nev. Additionally, he leaves four grandsons and three granddaughters and numerous nephews and nieces, not to mention his many friends who, over the years, became "family" to him. At his request, there will be no services. Internment will be held at a later date at Pinetop-Lakeside, Ariz. The family wishes to thank the wonderful people who staff the Hospice San Antonio Inpatient Facility and the Audi Murphy VA Hospital for their loving care. Alan Wickham MIDLAND - Alan Wickham was born Nov. 23, 1935, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Helen M. (Barney) and Meryle A. Wickham. He fought a valiant fight against lung cancer but died Monday, June 17, 2002, at a local hospital. Alan married Barbara Knapek on Dec. 6, 1980, in Midland. Alan served in the U.S. Army for over 20 years. He was a contract truck driver (owner-operator) contracted to Ace Transportation, Terminal No. 57, in Odessa. Alan was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anne Wickham; and father- in-law and best friend, A.T. "Shorty" Knapek. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Wickham of Midland; his sons, Michael Wickham and wife Dianne of Richardson, Sean L. Kator and wife Heidi of Midland and Mark Kator and wife Elizabeth of Terrytown, La.; his grandchildren, Katherine Wickham, Christopher Wickham, Patric Sloboda, David Sloboda, Sean C. Kator, Shane Kator, Ian Kator, Laura Kator and Charlotte Kator; his brothers, Clayton Wickham and wife Barbara of Escondido, Calif., and Gerald Wickham and wife Sharon of Eau Claire, Wis.; and his sisters, Barbara Cole and husband Mike of Rapid City, S.D., and Margaret Wickham of Deland, Fla. Alan is also survived by his best friend, mother-in-law and caregiver, Sibie Knapek of Andrews. A visitation has been scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 19, 2002, at Ellis Funeral Home. P.R. Cates Jr. ODESSA - P.R. Cates Jr., age 84, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Big Spring. Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Young officiating. A private committal service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Phillip Richard Cates was born July 4, 1917, in Wichita Falls to Phillip and Lila Cates. He worked in the Civilian Construction Corps at age 15 and later served in the U.S. Cavalry. He married Texana Chilton on June 4, 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and received a medal for expert marksmanship for rifle and pistol. Mr. Cates loved to hunt, and he was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was the longtime owner of Cates Refrigeration. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He was a member of First Baptist Church and an active member of the K.I.T. Club and Dr. E.J. Claassen's Sunday school class. Dad was proud to be a fifth cousin to Davy Crockett, defender of the Alamo. His parents and a sister, Lila Catherine Belew, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Texana Cates of Odessa; his sons, Phillip Cates and wife Barbara and Rick Cates and wife Anna, all of Odessa; a brother, Don Cates and wife Donna of Lubbock; a sister, Carol Cates of Lubbock; a brother-in-law, Melvin Belew of Madisonville; grandchildren, Christi Cates, Kim Clinkenbeard and husband Tracy, Cari Cates, Phillip W. Cates, Mickey Appleton and wife Margie and Robin Chambers; great-grandchildren, Missy, Mandy and Wesley Appleton; cousins, Keith Davis and wife Sue of Thorndale and Neil Davis of Los Alamos, N.M.; and his beloved poodle, Cujo.
