Hardin ODESSA - Jack C. Hardin, 76, of Odessa passed away Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 4, 1925, in Crawford, Okla. Jack was a retired Odessa police officer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Margie Miller Hardin. He is survived by his son, Leslie Hardin and wife Barbara of Rockford, Ill.; two daughters, Jackie Leftwich and husband Steve of Odessa and Shirley Gawlick and husband Robert of Fort Worth; brother, Travis Hardin of Canadian; sister, Wanzell Davis of Elk City, Okla.; and five grandchildren, Luke and Angie Hardin of Rockford, Ill., Kim and Chuck Leftwich of Odessa and Brandon Gawlik of Beaumont. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at Sherwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Hiser officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. George Edward Jones ODESSA - George Edward Jones, 86, of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. He was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Greenville, Texas. His parents were Troy Paul and Anna Grace Fleeman Jones. He had two brother, Troy Paul and Howard Jones. Edward graduated from Greenville High School. He then attended East Texas University in Commerce, where he received both bachelor's and master's degrees in English. During World War II, he was denied service because of flat feet. He then worked for Consolidated Vultee in Fort Worth on the B-36 bomber. After the war, he attended the University of Illinois in Champayne Urbana for further graduate work. From there he continued teaching at Louisiana Tech University for 15 years. During that time he took courses at Western Colorado State, Texas Tech and the University of Illinois. Since being in Odessa, he taught at Odessa College for seven years. He was active in the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed AARP work and was Assistant State Director for two years. He was a member of the Golden Kiwanas Club and a lover of classical music. One of the works he was most fond of was helping to establish the Parks Methodist Retirement Center in Odessa along with the Rev. Lacy Standifer. He loved flowers and plants, especially irises and day lilies. He was a member of West Texas Iris Society and president from 1979 to 1980. His favorite pastime was reading. He was preceded in death by his third son, Kent Dundas Jones. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Waggener Jones of Odessa; sons, David E. Jones of Denver, Colo. And Carl Phillip Jones of Odessa and two grandchildren, Cody Carlton Jones and Chessa Nicole Jones. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Trout officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Oleata Pearl Butler Lasiter PLEASANTON - Oleata Pearl Butler Lasiter was born on May 10, 1918, in Liberty, Texas, to Louis Nap and Mittie Butler. She married the love her life of 55 years, Howard C. Lasiter, on Nov. 19, 1939. Howard preceded her in death Sept. 11, 1994. The Lord called her home June 22, 2002. Oleata was a resident of Grandfalls, Texas, for 25 years and Pleasanton, Texas for 35 years. She served as Pleasanton City Secretary from 1974 to 1980. Oleata was very active at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Grandfalls, Texas, and Pleasanton, Texas, for over 50 years. Oleata was a very sweet and gentle person who loved her family and pets. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Burton of Monahans and Cindy Mercer and husband Lloyd Jr. of Pleasanton, Texas; a sister, Birdie Casey of Goliad, Texas; seven grandchildren, Patrick Burton of Austin, Texas, Michael and Diana Burton of Llano, Texas, Shannon and Lynn Burton of Dallas, Texas, Patrick Jr. and Christina Hurley of Pleasanton, Texas, Chris and Katrin Mercer of Pearland, Texas, Melanie and Paul Llamas of San Antonio, Texas and Courtnie Mercer of Abilene, Texas; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Oleata was preceded in death by her husband Howard C. Lasiter, her parents, Louis Nap and Mittie Bulter, and a son-in-law, John A. Burton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton with the Rev. Bill Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Three Rivers City Cemetery. Harvie Cyril "Mac" McCulloch ODESSA - Private final rites and inurnment services for Harvie Cyril "Mac" McCulloch were held June 22, 2002, at St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church with the Rev. Laura Deaderick officiating. Mac was born March 28, 1921, in Sulphur Springs to Harvey Mac McCulloch and Maxie Hooker. One of five children, Mac attended school in Doole and worked on the family farm to support the family through the Great Depression. He left McCulloch County to serve his country during World War II. From 1941 to 1945, Mac served with distinction in the 56th Naval Construction Battalion in the Pacific Theater, in Hawaii and on the island of Guam. One of the proudest accomplishments of Mac's life, other than his family, was the everlasting friendships Mac maintained with his fellow SeaBees. Until his death, Mac and his family attended annual and semi-annual Sea-Bee reunions throughout the U.S. After the war, Mac met and married Peggy Jean Weilmuenster on Oct. 18, 1952, and they settled in Odessa. To everyone who knew Mac, he was the quintessential entrepreneur. Through the years, Mac was engaged in the air conditioning manufacturing business, auto, truck and equipment sales, commercial and residential construction, farming, ranching, banking, real estate and oil and gas businesses. Mac was also a member of the El Maida Shrine of El Paso, H.A. McFarland Lodge No. 1338 and was a 32nd degree Mason, the Odessa Scottish Rite Association, Sheriff's Association of Texas, the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, a life member of the American Legion Post No. 430, a life member of the VFW Post No. 4372 and a Golden Member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mac would most like to be remembered as a defender and supporter of those less fortunate, for whom he selflessly contributed his time, resources and moral support. His favorite charities were the Masonic Home, Shriners Children's Hospital and Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch. Mac never knew a stranger. He was warm, friendly, extremely interesting and always ready to help anyone who was willing to help himself. Mac and Peggy had two children, Michael Jay McCulloch, a doctor of veterinary medicine who lives in Odessa with his wife, Kathleen; and Betty McCulloch Manning, a dental hygienist, who lives in The Woodlands with her husband, Kendall. Peggy, Michael and Betty were the light of Mac's life. Mac was predeceased by his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, children and two brothers.
