All rights reserved =========================================================================== Thursday August 08, 2002 Lurlene Carroll Henderson CRANE - Lurlene Carroll Henderson went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at First Baptist Church of McCamey, Texas, with interment at McCamey Cemetery. Arrangements are with Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Lurlene was born August 28, 1904, to John Marshal and Melissia Carroll. She lived most of her childhood in Lohn, Texas, and attended Mary Hardin Baylor University. She married James Bryan Henderson on June 1, 1926. Bryan died June 1, 1986, on their 60th wedding anniversary. Lurlene and family moved to McCamey in 1944 and resided there until Bryan’s death. She and her son, L.B. Henderson, moved to Odessa to be near other children. Lurlene was a retired teacher, an artist, and was an active member in study clubs and garden clubs both in McCamey and Odessa. Most important to her was her service to the Lord. She was always a Sunday School teacher and for many years led youth groups in McCamey. Many people have returned over the years to tell her and her family how greatly she influenced their lives for the better. Her life and her relationship with her family was always guided by God. She guided her children with faith, prayers and deep, deep love. She was preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Beulah Orrick. She is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law Arlon and Sibyl Carroll of Crane and Willard and Martha Carroll of Abilene. She is survived by all of her children: L.B. Henderson of Odessa; Bob and Brylene Smith of Odessa; Rex Henderson of Houston; Lex and Marilyn Henderson of Austin; and Joe and Robbie Henderson of Odessa. She is also survived by all of her grandchildren: Coleman Smith, Cara Smith, Heather Henderson and Heath Henderson, all of Odessa; Marshal Henderson of Washington, D.C.; Kimberly Harris of Dublin, Ireland; Zachary Henderson of Austin; Dana Fryar of Uvalde; and Stacy McClary of San Angelo. Other survivors include all of her 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Lurlene enjoyed remarkable health. She owned her own home, drove her own car, quilted, gardened, painted, collected antiques, and was very active in Sherwood Baptist Church until the age of 93. "Her children arise up and call her blessed." Proverbs 31:28. The family will receive family and friends in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church in McCamey after the services. Visitation before the funeral can be made at Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane, Texas. Sonny Phelps ODESSA - Sonny Phelps of Missouri City, Texas, loving husband and father and proud grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 3, 2002, at the age of 56. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Temple Baptist Church with Dr. Griffin Jones officiating. Graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Sonny was born Nov. 13, 1945, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Thurston H. Phelps Sr. and Juanita Phelps, but always called Odessa his home. He was a graduate of Odessa High School and Odessa College. Sonny married Jerry Thacker on January 1, 1966, and they raised two sons, Thomas and Tony Phelps. Sonny was a fourteen-year veteran of the United States Air Force and was a devoted employee of Chevron-Texaco for the past 22 years. Sonny had a servant’s heart and lived every day devoted to his family while constantly helping others. "PaPa Sonny" or "Pop" also enjoyed spending time with two granddaughters and a grandson, who were the joys of his life. Sonny was preceded in death by his father, Thurston H. Phelps Sr.; sister, Diana Gail Thacker; fathers-in-law, Lloyd E. Thacker and O.C. "Red" Hartman; and nephew, Chris Alexander. Survivors include his wife, Jerry of Missouri City; sons, Thomas Phelps of Abilene and Tony Phelps of Denton; daughters-in-law, Stacy Phelps of Abilene and Lisa Phelps of Denton; grandchildren, Toni and Brady Phelps of Abilene and Landry Phelps of Denton; mother, Juanita Phelps of Andrews mother-in-law, Lorene Hartman of Odessa; brother, Eddie Phelps of Portland; brothers-in-law, Jim Thacker of Odessa and Joe Thacker of Snyder; and sister-in-law, Judy Howk of Okemah, Oklahoma, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Gilberto Rodriguez ODESSA - Gilberto Rodriguez, 67, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at his residence in Odessa. He was born June 26, 1935, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Manuel and Serveriana (Perez) Rodriguez. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Cerafin Avenido officiating. Burial will follow at the Ector County Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Martinez Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Alicia Rodriguez of Odessa; daughters, Naira Ivon Medrano and Luz Marie Rodriguez, both of Odessa, and Socorro Alicia Rodriguez of Denver, Colo.; sons, Manuel Fernando Rodriguez, Victor Hugo Rodriguez and Hector Mario Rodriguez, all of Odessa, and Gilberto Rodriguez Jr. of Presidio; brother, Jose De La Luz Rodriguez of Ojinaga; Elfida Rodriguez of Chihuahua; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Martinez Funeral Home. Joaquin Saenz ODESSA - Joaquin Saenz, 67, of Odessa, an oil company medal specialist, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at his residence. Services will be held at 12 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Cerafin Avenido officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. He was born in Santa Barbara, Mexico. He was Catholic. He is survived by his wife, Zenaida R. De Saenz of Odessa; daughters, Lorenza P. Rodriguez, Blanca Isela Sanchez and Angela Saenz Rodriguez, all of Odessa; sons, Juan Carlos Saenz Rodriguez and Joaquin Saenz Rodriguez, both of Odessa, Jesus Manuel Saenz Rodriguez of La Paz, Calif., and Jerardo Javier Saenz Rodriguez of Juarez, Mexico; 22 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
