All rights reserved =========================================================================== Sunday September 08, 2002 Herman Oder Bell MONAHANS - Herman Oder Bell departed his life on this earth on Sept. 5, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Craig Rhoton officiating. Burial will follow at the Monahans Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Family Funeral Services/Jackie Harkey. Hermon Bell was born on Oct. 31, 1929, in Neshusba County, Miss., to Joe H. Bell and Lucy Williams Bell. He moved to West Texas in the early ’50s. He married Christine Allen on Sept. 24, 1953, in Monahans, Texas, where he remained for the rest of his life. He worked in the oilfield until he received an injury, which disabled him from that type of work. He was a very active person and in order to stay active, he took up tree trimming and lawn maintenance full time. He was very well known in the community for his ability to perform this type of work. His favorite things in life other than his family were hunting and fishing. Herman was a very happy-go-lucky man and was always joking and making friends wherever he went. He never met a stranger. He lived life to tell his stories, his favorite ones being about his grandchildren. Hermon is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Chris Bell of Monahans; his only daughter, Pam Carson and her husband Robbie of Montgomery, Texas; and the two real treasures of his life, his two grandchildren, Chris Carson of Campbell, Calif., and Jennifer Carson of Odessa; one brother, Stevie Tew and wife Pat of Forest, Miss.; a sister, Blondell Jones of Jackson, Miss.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to your favorite charity. Gregory Thomas Chadic CRANE - Gregory Thomas Chadic went to be with the Lord on Sept. 5, 2002. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Crane with the Revs. Lyndel Lee and Clydel Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County Cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Greg was born to Mr. and Mrs. Grady Chadic on July 31, 1960, in Kermit, Texas. He moved to Crane in 1962, and resided there until his death. He was an employee of the Crane County Parks Department for 22 years. In November of 1999, he married Sarah Green of Odessa. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Crane. He was preceded in death by his father, Grady, and sisters, Linda Chadic and Sharon Coleman. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; and his mother, Wanda Chadic, both of Crane; brother, Geary Chadic and his wife Teresa of Monahans; a sister, Karen McPherson and husband Tony of Paducah; four nephews, and two nieces. Greg loved his family and friends and was loved in return by all of them. Greg loved to talk, hunt, and to fish. C.W. Freeman MIDLAND - C.W. Freeman, 78, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Trinity Haven Nursing Home in Midland, Texas. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at Pipkin Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Griffin Jones of Temple Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Pipkin Funeral Home and Chapel in Midland. C.W. was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Sulfer Springs, Texas, to Clarence Littlefield and Charlotte Jane McWilliams Freeman. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946, where he earned four bronze stars and three overseas service bars and was in the theatre in Normandy, Northern France. He was a drilling superintendent for Loffland Brothers Drilling for 36 years until his retirement. He was an usher for the Temple Baptist Church in Odessa, where he was a longtime member. He enjoyed fishing and camping and could repair anything as he loved to tinker. He had a smile for everyone. C.W. is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and three wives, Woneta Proctor, Norene Freeman and Helen Freeman. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Osborne and husband Jim of Midland and Charlotte Underwood of Andrews; two sons, Dwayne Freeman and wife Sherry of Merkel, Texas and Roy Fish of Pittsburg, Kan.; a sister, Olene Jones and husband Doc of San Angelo, Texas; two brothers, A.J. Freeman of Wichita Falls, Texas and Travis Freeman of Cleburne, Texas; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. C.W. had a special friend La Verne Farmer who always had a smile for him. A special thanks to the staff and his friends at Trinity Haven Nursing Home. Avalyn Pogue Whitmire ODESSA - Avalyn Pogue Whitmire, 88, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at a care facility in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Whitmire was born in Commerce, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1914, to the late Joseph A. and Lillis Leona Elliott Pogue. She moved to Midland in 1927 and remained in West Texas either in life or spirit until her death. Of her initial trip to Midland from Oklahoma, she wrote about the three-day trip in a "Ford touring car with isinglass curtains." She graduated from Midland High in 1931 and completed registered nurses’ training at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, in 1936. She lived in Ector County for 59 years where she started the ECISD school nursing program in 1947 and remained the head school nurse until her retirement in 1974. During those years, she touched the lives of many children in the Ector County public schools. She loved the summers she spent as camp nurse at Camp La Junta for Boys and Heart O’ the Hills Camp for Girls on the Guadalupe River near Hunt, Texas. In retirement she was active in the Modern Gardeners Garden Club and Ector County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed working in her yard, and won numerous horticulture prizes at the Permian Basin Fair. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Harwell C. Whitmire; a son, John P. Whitmire; her parents; and two brothers, J.C. Pogue and Bill Pogue. Survivors include a son, Jack Whitmire and wife Nelda of Victoria, Texas; daughters, Betty Sumner and husband Bill of Midland and Mary Fish and husband Steve of Tempe, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church of Odessa with the Rev. Steve Trout, senior pastor, officiating. Services are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland. The family suggests that memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Lee Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761 or to a charity of one’s choice. Joyce Epperson Brackeen ODESSA - Joyce Epperson Brackeen, 67, of Odessa, went to be with our Lord on Sept. 6, 2002. She passed away at Medical Center Hospital. She was born December 21, 1934, in Tyler, Texas, to Clarence and Ruby Epperson. She married Alvis L. Brackeen Feb. 10, 1978, in Odessa. She was a retired cook and waitress. She was also a Christian and a Baptist. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Alvis L. Brackeen; parents, Clarence and Ruby Epperson; and a brother, Donald W. Epperson. She is survived by her six sons, James Huse and wife Linda, Mike Huse and wife Marilyn and Steve Huse and wife Judy, all of Odessa, Tim Parish of Midland, Gary Brackeen and wife Ellie of Devine and J.D. Brackeen and wife Colinda of Azle, Texas; eight brothers, Billy Jo Epperson of Loraine, Charles Epperson of Schartz, Roy Epperson of Ballinger, Jerry Epperson of Burnet, George Epperson of Midlothian, Gerold Epperson of Colorado City and Micky Epperson of Odessa; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
