Word Sr. ODESSA - Clifton N. Word Sr., 87, passed away on Oct. 20, 2002. He was born June 18, 1915, in Ennis, Texas, to James H. and Lula B. Word. He was the youngest of nine children; all have preceded him in death. Mr. Word started a printing career as a high school junior in Big Lake, Texas, in 1931. He spent 46 years in the printing business. He met Johnnie Taylor in 1936 and married in December of 1937 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He moved to Fort Stockton, Texas, in 1938 and lived there until 1953 while working on The Fort Stockton Pioneer newspaper. He entered the Army from Fort Stockton and served from 1943 to 1946. He was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he was trained as a small arms technician. He then spent one year in France and Germany servicing military units up and down the Rhine River. The Word family moved to Odessa in 1953 and owned and operated Odessa Printing until they retired in 1976. Clifton and Johnnie were married for over 62 years, and had one son, Clifton N. Word Jr., born in 1947, who preceded him in death in 1993. Johnnie preceded him in death in March of 2000. Numerous nieces and nephews survive him. Copyright © 1999-2002 Odessa American.
