All rights reserved =========================================================================== November 08, 2002 Permian Basin Obituaries -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vernon Davis Anderson ODESSA - Vernon Davis Anderson of Odessa, 68, passed from this life on November 5, 2002. The son of William Ellis and Bessie Anderson, he was born March 17, 1934. At 9 years of age, he was stricken with polio, which left him crippled in body, but not in spirit. Confined to bed many months at a time as a child, he read everything he could get his hands on. History became a special interest leading him on knowledge quests in both secular and Biblical history. After he graduated from Grandfalls – Royalty High School in 1952, he obtained a B.S. degree from Texas A&M. Most of his adult life was spent in Bryan, Texas, where he was a CPA serving as the treasurer of General Security Life Insurance Co. He was an active member of West University Church of Christ. Post Polio Syndrome struck him 50 years after his initial illness. He heroically battled the disease until it claimed his life on November 5, 2002. He is survived by 2 sisters, Anita Love of Odessa; and Helen Black of Grandfalls; one brother, William Ellis Anderson of Mesquite; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Howard Neil Anderson. The families of his brothers and sisters meant a great deal to him. Family gatherings were especially dear to his heart as he enjoyed playing board games and other festivities with them. He especially looked forward to visiting with them. Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2002 at West University Church of Christ, 10137 W. University with Roy D. Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to Odessa Christian School or West University Church of Christ. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. At a very young age, Vernon was struck with a disease. Polio crippled him. But yet he refused to freeze. Passing the time away, He read the entire library Learning things as he went Over many a century. To A&M he went Where he could use his knowledge, Obtain a degree And graduate from college. Even up to the last Vernon continued his long fight Never giving up hope 'Til he had given all his might. Now he's resting in peace Standing hand in hand with angels In a land where he Has no more pain, strife, or struggles. John W. Brothers ODESSA - John William "Bill" Brothers went to be with the Lord November 6, 2002. He was born July 28, 1924, in Logan, W.Va., to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Paul L. and Kathleen Brothers. He graduated from St. Albans High School, St. Albans, W.Va., in 1942. He had one year at Purdue University before joining the Navy and serving on the USS Key DE-348 for a year. When home on leave he met the love of his life, Mabel Dirksen, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. He graduated from Marshall University with a BS degree in 1949. His career led him to work at Goodrich-Gulf Chemicals, General Tire, Windecker Industries and ending with Morrow's Nut House franchise. He volunteered his accounting skills for various organizations. He is preceded in death by his son; Paul T. Brothers and two sisters, Frances Thomas of W.Va. and Patricia Huey of Pa. Bill is survived by his wife, Mabel; daughter, Alice Fischer and her husband, Ernie; two granddaughters, Kathleen and Marianne of Palmdale, Calif.; his daughter-in-law, Shelia Brothers of Brocton, Ill.; sisters, Betty Hoover of Huntington, W.Va. and Dorothy May Echols of St. Albans, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews. His family and relationship with Christ were very important to him. He and Mabel loved to play bridge with the Seniors group and their good friends Pastor and Mrs. Otterness. He was proud of his friendship with Tom Wade that started in elementary school, carried through WWII and up to his passing. He loved sports and being active. A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord, Odessa, TX, Saturday, November 9, at 11 a.m. Lunch will follow. Burial will take place Saturday, November, 16 at 11 a.m. at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Huntington, W.Va. Wilson Funeral Directors. Juanita Reid Daugherty CLOVIS - Juanita Reid Daugherty, 85, a homemaker, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in her home after a lengthy illness. Juanita was born January 13, 1917, in Throckmorton to T.W. and Elizabeth Cohron Reid. She was the youngest of seven children. In 1933, she moved with her family to Curry County. She married Robert Hagler December 27, 1933. Mr. Hagler died in a plane crash October 8, 1944, in Carlsbad N.M. She married Harold W. Daugherty June 8, 1966. As a young woman, she enjoyed playing the piano for her grandchildren. She enjoyed many years of traveling and fishing. She was a member of the Yucca Good Sams Club and a member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; two brothers; three sisters; and one son-in-law. She is survived by her husband, Harold Daugherty; one daughter, Ginger Hagler Marler of Odessa; a stepson, Paul Daugherty and wife Jeannette of Clovis; one stepdaughter, Darla Banks and husband Keith of Amarillo; one brother, Norman Reid of Marble Falls; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 8, at the funeral home. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at Steed-Todd Chapel, with Ron Eggleton and Jon Forrest officiating. Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Margaret Ellen Davis ODESSA - Margaret Ellen Davis, 70, of Odessa, died Thursday, November 7, 2002, at her residence. She was born to Ollie and Grace Keese October 29, 1932, in Utopia. She was raised in The Hill Country. She met and later married Billy N. Davis June 12, 1959, in Monahans. She was a homemaker most of her life. Margaret was a Christian and was a very devoted and loving wife and mother. She passed after a lengthy illness. Funeral Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2002, at Zion Christian Church. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Monahans Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Dewey Blevins officiating. Pall bearers will be Ronnie J. Williams, Ronnie J. Williams, Jr., Terry Raines, Chester "Pepper" Morris, and Dennis Morris. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her husband, Billy N. Davis of Odessa; daughters, Billie Ellen Wells and Tamara "Bamm" Williams, both of Odessa; stepdaughters, Norma Davis and Betty Whitlock, both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brother, Tommy Keese of Albany; sisters, Ruby Whit of Sweetwater, Kay Watts of Monahans and Rhonda Johnston of Casper, Wyo.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Gladys Opal Harwell ODESSA - Opal Harwell, 86, of Odessa, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born June 2,1916, in Corsicana, Texas to William and Mary Atkeisson. Opal worked many years on the family farm and also in the cotton mill in Corsicana where she meet James Harwell and they married March 27,1948. She came to Odessa in 1960 from Corsicana. She was a housewife and a member of the Church of Christ. Opal loved camping, fishing and being with her family. She will be deepley missed by all who knew her. Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9,2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Don Belk+ officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Survivors include daughter, Shirley Taylor of Odessa; son Don Hardee of Odessa; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. John Matthew Novak ODESSA - John Matthew Novak, 71, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Van Houten, N.M. He married Johnnie Roberts Feb. 9, 1948, in Odessa. He was a retired roughneck and a Jehovahs Witness. He enjoyed fishing and gunsmithing. He was preceded in death by son Steve Novak. He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Corine Novak of Odessa; sons, Barry Novak of San Antonio and Lance Novak of Odessa; daughters, Lauren Musquiz, Debra Rodriguez and Mary Novak, all of Odessa, Shelly Meyers of The Woodlands, and Crystal Thomas of Beaumont; brothers, Frank Novak, Jr. of Fort Stockton, Larry Novak of Fort Worth, Phillip Novak of Marshall, Ark., Norbert Novak of Arkansas, Stanley Novak of Graham, and Bobby Daniels of Washington; sisters Sandra Demousett of Colmesneil, Margie Golden of Whitney and Ida Roberts of Missouri; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Geraldine 'Gerry' Thompson ODESSA - Geraldine "Gerry" Thompson, 78, of Odessa passed away Thursday, November 7, 2002, at the Hospice House. She was born September 22, 1924, in Mount Vernon, Ill. She married Roy D. Thompson October 17, 1954, in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Thompson moved to Odessa in 1985 from Missouri. She was a retired Credit Union clerk and a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Rock Hill, Mo. She loved to sew. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lela Rose, and sister, Dena Zimmerman. She is survived by her husband, Roy Thompson of Odessa; sister, Nadine Sims and husband John of Gardendale; brothers-in-law, Stanley Thompson of Imperial, Mo., Elmo Thompson of Eminence, Mo., Wayne Thompson of Eureka, Mo., and Donald Thompson of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Thelma Chapel of Alton, Ill., Mabel Weller and Erma Young, both of Salem Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
