Floyd Sexton Chambers ODESSA - Floyd Sexton Chambers passed away Dec. 27, 2002, at his home. Floyd was born in Hopeton, Okla., July 25, 1919, to Monty and Neta Chambers. He graduated from Avard High School in 1936. After his father passed away, he helped his mother with the family farm. While helping with the farm, he answered his call to serve his country - enlisting in December of 1942. He did his basic training at Will Rogers Field in Oklahoma City. He was with the 47th Bomber Squadron. He was sent overseas for two and a half years, serving in Africa, Italy, France and Tunisia. He received the Silver Service Star, three Bronze Service Stars and Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit. He was also a Staff Sergeant. He returned home July 1945. He was on his way to Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped, ending the war. He was discharged August 1945 and returned to the family farm. He was so proud to serve his country he became a lifetime member of the VFW. After returning from the war, he started dating Verna Lee Simons, who became his wife June 30, 1946. From this union three children were born, Janet Rae, Floyd Alan and Monte William. They lived on the farm until 1952 when he went into construction work. He helped build concrete grain elevators, which brought him to Texas in June 1954. The family moved to Andres, Texas, to help build a gasoline plant. After living in Andrews, the family moved to Odessa in June of 1957. Wanting to stay close to home, Floyd became self-employed. He owned Chambers Battery and Electric from November 1959 to February 1972. Later on, he went back into construction work as a construction superintendent for Bowden Construction, Holloman Construction and Kelly Coppedge. He retired from Kelly Coppedge in 1996. He enjoyed all aspects of his work and took great pride in his responsibility and his safety record. Upon his retirement Floyd kept busy by keeping his yard and caring for his two dogs, Rambo and Andrea. He also enjoyed using his hands doing woodwork and keeping things running around the home.
